About the Society

BCFO is a not-for-profit, charitable organization whose members are birders and ornithologists, novices to experts, that is committed to the study, preservation, and enjoyment of British Columbia’s wild birds.


The purposes of the Society shall be: 

  1. To promote the study and enjoyment of wild birds in British Columbia.
  2. To disseminate knowledge and appreciation of birds to our Members and to the general public through the regular publication of a journal and/or a newsletter.
  3. To foster cooperation between amateur and professional ornithologists, and to support ornithological research programs.
  4. To support natural history and conservation efforts to preserve birds and their habitats.

Research Grants

BCFO encourages submission of proposals for financial assistance for bird surveys and other ornithological research. It also wishes to foster greater connections between applicants and the society.

Eligibility:

  • Planned projects for bird surveys and other ornithological research.
  • Applicants should be, or be willing to become, BCFO members (become a member).
  • Requests must meet one of the following purposes of the society:
    • Promote the study and enjoyment of wild birds in British Columbia.
    • Disseminate knowledge and appreciation of birds to our Members and to the general public through regular publication of a journal and/or a newsletter.
    • Foster cooperation between amateur and professional ornithologists, and support ornithological research programs.
    • Support natural history and conservation efforts to preserve birds and their habitats.
  • Applicants may request financial, volunteer, or in-kind support.
  • All reasonable requests up to a $1000 limit and within the financial strength of the organization will be considered, with any larger requests requiring approval at the AGM.

Ineligibility:

  • BCFO does not provide funds for completed projects.
