Overview:

New Horizons travel fellowships

The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers traveling fellowships to cover the cost of attending the annual New Horizons in Science briefings for journalists, part of the annual ScienceWriters joint meeting.

The annual New Horizons in Science program brings together top-rank scientists and leading science reporters for an in-depth look at seminal developments in science, medicine and technology that are likely to make news in the coming months. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the day-long professional workshops sponsored by the National Association of Science Writers that immediately precede the briefings, in addition to social events, tours and field trips organized by NASW, CASW and the meeting hosts.

The fellowships covering costs up to $1,200 are intended primarily for reporters from smaller metropolitan print and broadcast news outlets, freelancers and webcasters with a demonstrated interest in science writing. They offer a unique introduction to science reporting that will prove of long-term benefit to the individual and the profession. New Horizons fellows will be asked to provide a written report or social-media curation on their experience.

You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website.

Eligibility:

  • The fellowships are intended primarily for U.S. journalists from publications and broadcast outlets that do not routinely cover major science meetings or employ a full-time science writer.
