Environmental Stewardship Grants

Environmental Stewardship is one of the four focus areas of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation.

In 2023, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation awarded more than $1 million in environmental grants to nonprofit organizations and public and private K-12 schools to support programs that educate students and the public about environmental science, protect and preserve natural habitats, improve open spaces and make nature accessible.

Eligibility:

  • Foundation grant support is available to:
    • Not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations
    • Organizations within geographic areas (listed below) where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests
    • Organizations that focus on education, environment, culture and the arts, civic and community development, and health and human services
  • Geographic Areas Eligible
    • Connecticut

    • North Carolina: The counties of Alamance, Alexander, Beaufort, Bertie, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Camden, Caswell, Chatham, Chowan, Cleveland, Currituck, Dare, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gaston, Gates, Granville, Halifax, Haywood, Henderson, Hertford, Iredell, Jackson, Lee, Madison, Martin, McDowell, Nash, Northampton, Orange, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Person, Pitt, Polk, Rowan, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Tyrell, Vance, Wake, Warren and Washington, and the cities of Roanoke Rapids and Weldon
    • Ohio: Allen, Ashland, Ashtabula, Auglaize, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Guernsey, Jefferson, Hardin, Harrison, Holmes, Knox, Lake, Mahoning, Medina, Mercer, Monroe, Noble, Paulding, Portage, Putnam, Shelby, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, Van Wert, Washington, Wayne, and Wood.
    • Rhode Island: Washington
    • South Carolina: All localities are invited to apply.
    • Utah: All counties with the exception of Kane and Wayne.
    • Virginia: All localities are invited to apply.

  • Budget items may include but are not limited to:
    • supplies and materials
    • equipment specifically related to the proposed project and
    • staff training

Ineligibility:

  • The Environmental Stewardship Grants program will not cover:
    • Support for capital and/or land acquisition
    • Long-term research projects
    • General operating grants
    • Overhead, indirect costs or endowments
  • Foundation grant support is NOT available to:
  • Tangible benefits, including utility payments to Dominion Energy or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates
  • Individuals
  • Religious programs of churches or other sectarian organizations
  • Fraternal, political, advocacy or labor organizations
  • Projects or organizations that are not located within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests
  • Fund-raising events (dinners, lunches, etc.)
  • Golf tournaments or other sporting events
  • Organizations without 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
  • Organizations that limit membership and services based on race, religion, color, creed, sex, age or national origin
  • Advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes
  • Travel-related events, including student trips or tours
  • Memorial campaigns
  • Dominion does not typically fund university research projects or endow chairs.
  • The primary interest of the Dominion Foundation is to support programs and specific projects. Consequently, support of capital campaigns is limited and provided on an exceptional basis.
