Overview:

The Hyde Family Foundation, which began with an initial $1 million investment by Joseph Hyde Sr. in 1961, is a philanthropic fund founded by members of the Hyde family. Today, the assets of the Hyde Family Foundation total more than $175 million, and approximately $20 million is granted annually to nonprofit organizations dedicated to building a thriving, unified Memphis for all.

Grant Program

The Hyde Family Foundation makes grants that empower the people and programs making real differences in the community and provide leadership on public policy issues that will transform Memphis. We support initiatives that fall within and advance any one of our four distinct impact areas:

High-Quality Education

We believe that all children and young adults deserve a high-quality education that prepares them to achieve their greatest potential.

We invest in initiatives that:

  • Transform early childhood, primary, secondary, and postsecondary education
  • Develop and reward great teachers and school leaders
  • Sponsor effective public policy
  • Support interventions for the whole child

Vibrant Spaces and Communities

We believe that Memphis can become a city full of vibrant spaces and communities that are equitable, economically vital, offer great quality-of-life, and attract and retain citizens.

We invest in initiatives that:

  • Strengthen Memphis' urban core to ensure that it is a place where people can live, work, and play
  • Ensure the city's greenways, bike lanes, parks, and public spaces—from the Riverfront to Shelby Farms Park—connect and benefit all Memphians
  • Support the development and growth of thriving communities by investing in the systems and people that sustain them

Thriving Arts and Culture

We believe strengthening Memphis’ rich artistic and cultural identity is essential to the city’s economic and social vitality. We support organizations that provide access to art that is exciting, inspirational, and reflects the soul of Memphis.

We invest in initiatives that:

  • Sustain and build the capacity of high-potential arts organizations
  • Contribute to building a thriving arts ecosystem and a growing population of local artists with competitive skillsets
  • Engage diverse populations and communities and artists of color

Engaged Leadership and Civic Pride

We believe that this is a pivotal period for Memphis. Now, more than ever, the combination of a shared city-building vision, unified leadership, and a collective civic pride can be a powerful tool for scaling change.

We invest in initiatives that:

  • Build diverse and effective leaders across all sectors and all communities
  • Inform, engage, and equip Memphians to share and celebrate the city’s progress and pride
  • Launch and support next-generation leadership and a new generation of givers
