Overview:

Areas of Interest

We focus our giving in the areas of children and family services, education, general aviation, free speech and animal services. Each area of interest has a special meaning to us.

For example, Jim is a pilot who flew his first solo in a glider when he was 14 years old. Angela was introduced to aviation by her father, a mechanical engineer who designed helicopters for Bell Helicopter. Together, we are avid aviation enthusiasts. We support several nonprofit organizations whose mission is to foster a love of flying including the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Academy, a unique summer camp for young people. We recently launched The Blue Sky Education Foundation (blueskyfoundation.org) to inspire young people to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and to promote aerospace careers.

Angela is a health care professional who has experienced firsthand the needs of medically fragile children and adults. We support several organizations like the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, which works to raise public awareness of the importance of enabling individuals to participate fully in life and The Smile Train, which provides life-changing medical services to needy children.

As our personal interests have evolved, so have our areas of interest for our charitable giving. Going forward, we expect to continue to review and refine our areas of interest for the Jim and Angela Thompson Foundation.

Our Philosophy

We support nonprofits that are 501(c)(3) organizations with a proven track record of making a difference in their communities. We focus our giving in our areas of interest, which include children and family services, education, aviation, free speech and animal services.

We are particularly interested in supporting smaller, lesser-known charities that may not qualify for funding from larger charitable foundations. We believe small organizations often have the flexibility to develop and implement creative outreach initiatives that can make a direct and immediate difference in people’s lives.
