About SFS

The Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) is an international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote further understanding of freshwater ecosystems (rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries) and ecosystems at the interface between aquatic and terrestrial habitats (wetlands, bogs, fens, riparian forests and grasslands).

The society fosters exchange of scientific information among the membership, and with other professional societies, resource managers, policy makers, educators, and the public. Society members study the genetics to community structure of freshwater organisms, freshwater ecosystem function, physical processes that affect freshwaters, and linkages between freshwater ecosystems and surrounding landscapes.

Applied aspects of their science include habitat and water quality assessment, conservation, fisheries and invasive species management, integrated water resource management, and restoration. The SFS Endowment Awards are based on research merit.

The Simpson Fund supports research in applied issues (1 award of $600). Established in memoriam of Karl W. Simpson.

You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website.

  • Students will only be eligible for one award during a specific degree program (i.e., only one during a B.S., B.A., M.S. or Ph.D. degree).
  • Students may receive only one award in an award year.
  • There are no restrictions on how the awards can be spent from the Simpson Fund, but it is assumed that disbursements will be directly related to research leading to student degree programs, including travel to the SFS meeting.
  •  Applicants will also be considered for the General Endowment Awards.

You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Applicants must be CURRENT STUDENT members of SFS.

  • A student cannot receive both an Endowment Award and a Conservation Committee Award in the same year.
