The Orangutan Foundation runs a small research grants programme for students studying orangutan behaviour and ecology or related rainforest field research in Indonesia. In 2016, the Foundation launched a special award Sir Terry Pratchett “Oook” Award for the Conservation of Orangutans and Their Habitat, in memory of late Orangutan Foundation trustee, Sir Terry Pratchett. 

 The Orangutan Foundation invites grant applications for research into orangutan behaviour and ecology, or related rainforest field research in Indonesia. Grants are  awarded annually to a maximum of £500 each.

  • Research applicants can be students at any of the following academic levels: Undergraduates/Masters/PhD.
  • This award is open to applicants of any nationality.


  • Preference will be given to research focusing on ecology, animal wildlife density and population, animal wildlife behaviour, water analysis in Sungai Sekonyer River, understudied populations and to candidates demonstrating a high level of competence.
