Background

The Scientific Meeting Support Grant aims to advance research in applied microbiology and encourage our members to promote and highlight innovations in applied microbiology at a local level as well as providing a networking opportunity for established scientists and students.

Apply for up to £2,000 to support your scientific meeting, lecture or workshop, including (but not limited to) enhancing your own existing meetings (international speaker expenses, for example) or fully supporting a low-budget research meeting, lecture or workshop.

The Scientific Meeting Support Grant aims to advance research in applied microbiology and encourage our members to promote and highlight innovations in applied microbiology at a local level as well as providing a networking opportunity for established scientists and students.

Maximum award: £2,000 (additional funding of £500 is available for audiences that are underserved or that typically we fail to reach, or support for mobility issues and special educational needs). You do not need to apply for the maximum amount.

Eligibility:

  • The applicant/main organiser must be an existing Full, International or ECS Member of SfAM and have been so for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Normally a member may not apply for a further Scientific Meeting Support Grant within 2 years.
  • Applicants must clearly explain why they are applying for this grant and how it will benefit the applied microbiology community.
  • Costs will normally be paid retrospectively following verification of all original receipts by the Society office.
    • The applicant must complete an expense claim form (available from the Society).
    • Expenses will be paid in one instalment on production of original receipts within 12 weeks of the event.
    • No payments will be made without this documentation.
  • Applicants must provide a summary of the meeting, of at least 250 words, within 12 weeks of the event.
    • No payments will be made without this documentation.
  • Successful applicants must submit their claim for reimbursement within 12 weeks from the date of the lecture or meeting.
    • Reimbursement of expenses will only be paid by bank transfer directly into a bank account, normally in GB pounds sterling, euro or US/Canadian/Australian dollars.
    • Under NO circumstances will intermediary banks be used.
  • The grant will cover reasonable speaker expenses, including travel and if necessary one night’s hotel accommodation (only for speakers not delegates).
    • Additionally, the grant may be used to contribute towards the cost of room hire, AV equipment and publicity materials.
  • If appropriate, the Society may attend the meeting as an exhibitor at no further cost.

You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. The applicant/main organiser must be an existing Full, International or ECS Member of SfAM and have been so for a minimum of 12 months and have paid their second consecutive subscription to be eligible to apply. Life Members may also apply.

Ineligibility:

  • The Scientific Meeting Support Grant is NOT to fund expeditions, wages, prizes (e.g. for posters), social events/refreshment breaks, alcohol or abstract booklets.
  • The Grants Awards Panel will also NOT accept repeat applications for the same event held in future years.
