Common Questions

How long does it typically take to write a grant?

The number of hours it takes to complete a grant will vary based on the type of application and the type and quality of material you are working with. Foundation grants can take between 5 and 30 hours, while government grants can take between 40 and 100+ hours. Keep in mind that the writing process becomes more efficient with time as you start to build a base of pre-existing, high quality proposals to work from. If you already have some grant text prepared, things are likely to go even faster.

How does Instrumentl vet grant writers and grant coaches?

Instrumentl only works with writers and coaches whose previous clients have been thrilled with their work. We find past references are the most accurate and fair way to understand writers’ and coaches’ strengths and weaknesses.

What can my grant writer or grant coach help me with?

Your grant writer or grant coach can help you with any part of the grants process. This includes (but is not limited to): assessing if your organization is grant-ready (and helping you get there if needed), identifying ideal funders, proofreading & editing proposals you’ve already started, and developing new proposals from scratch.

Which is better for me: hiring a grant coach or grant writer?

A grant coach is a great option if your organization is looking to grow your internal capacity to write grants, and you already have some experience with it. A coach will help you dramatically improve the quality of your proposals. Coaching is also a good option if you would simply like to know how best to supervise grant writers on your team.

(If you’ve never submitted a grant but would like to learn how, we would suggest getting some training first. We can direct you to some excellent resources!)

A grant writer is best if your primary goal is to increase your organization's bandwidth to submit more or different proposals than you have in the past. If you have a lot of interesting grant opportunities to pursue but not enough time to do it all yourself a grant writer can help! Or if you’d rather not get too involved in the nitty-gritty of grant writing, this would be your best choice.

Some organizations benefit from working with both grant writers and coaches at different times. If you’re not sure where you fall, we can help guide you.
