Cultural and Historical Preservation & Revitalization 

Purpose

The purpose of this funding is to support non-governmental, community-driven initiatives that advance the restoration, preservation, documentation, and perpetuation of Lahaina’s cultural and historic resources impacted by the 2023 wildfires.

When conducting a scan of Lahaina's cultural and historic landmarks, we see a variety of needs emerging within the context of a shared understanding of the cultural significance of spaces and places, the status of damage and potential restoration, and the mounting obstacles of historical preservation post-fire. This funding seeks to support the community’s efforts to uplift the histories and cultures that represent Lahaina’s past, present, and future.

Program applicants should consider how their projects and activities are uplifting the recovery of the impacted region, how cultural and historical programs and projects support individual and collective healing, and what efforts can be supported to recover or revitalize significant histories that can and should be preserved at this time.

All applications received will be shared with the Maui Recovery Funders Collaborative members.

Capital Requests

The award ceiling for capital requests is $750,000.00

The Edward Yoshiharu Sakuma & Kay Kubo Sakuma Student Teaching Merit Scholarship, established in 2018, supports students at the University of Hawai'i - Manoa, College of Education. General Program Requests

The award ceiling for general program requests is $250,000

The Laura Jean Armstrong Fund, established in memory of Dr. Laura Jean Armstrong, supports graduate students pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing or Public Health. Eligible applicants must be residents of Hawai'i, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Preference is given to previous recipients who continue to meet these criteria. This fund honors Dr. Armstrong's legacy of dedication to improving health and welfare in underserved communities.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

The Laura N. Dowsett Fund honors Laura Dowsett, a pioneer in occupational therapy in Hawai'i. This fund supports residents of Hawai'i enrolled in occupational therapy programs who demonstrate financial need and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Preference is given to previous awardees who continue to meet eligibility requirements. This initiative aims to empower future therapists while celebrating the legacy of a dedicated leader in the field.

Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

The mission of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawai‘i. SFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai‘i and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Outreach Initiative Program

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) provides public funds through the Outreach Initiative Program to support statewide touring and outreach activities that increase opportunities for individuals to experience different forms of artistic and cultural expression and engagement. The program supports the SFCA Strategic Priority Hoʻākoakoa (convene, to call together) to build community capacity for creativity, communication, and learning.

Program Scope

Administer a statewide touring program providing arts and culture outreach activities to under-served communities including, but not limited to, rural, socio-economic disadvantaged, geographically disadvantaged, programs for disadvantaged youth, programs for Native or immigrant populations, and activities involving individuals with varying abilities. The touring and outreach activities must be accessible. Activities must occur in person at public spaces, senior centers, public libraries, public housing communities, or a hybrid of online/streaming. The Outreach Initiative Program must provide activities to at least three (3) islands, including outreach to rural and/or under-served communities.

Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

The mission of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawai‘i. SFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai‘i and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Community Arts Grant Program

The Community Arts Grants program (previously called Biennium Grants) supports eligible nonprofit 501(c)3 arts and culture organizations throughout the state. The grant awards funding to organizations supporting programs and projects that advance the arts, culture, and the humanities in the lives of the people of Hawaiʻi.

The legal provisions of the Community Arts Grants are in Sections 9-11 through 9-18 of the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes. Each fiscal biennium grant budget is contingent on the State fiscal biennium and appropriations from the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. Grants awarded are subject to available funding for the fiscal year.

Grant Categories

Applicants may submit an application for a project to one of the following categories that align with the SFCA Strategic Priorities 2019-2023. Applicants can apply for one or both fiscal years, and the category and project can be the same or different for each year.

• Heritage/Preservation: Heritage and Preservation (Culture) projects are well grounded in the history of Hawaii and the living cultures in Hawaii. Amplify Hawaiian cultural arts, history, and heritage and support communities to advance cultural knowledge, build cultural capacity, and preserve cultural legacies.

• Community Arts, Community Development, Arts and Healing: Community Arts, Community Development, Arts & Healing (Engagement). Art-based community development projects that increase the creative capacity of rural communities and enhance opportunities to experience culture and the arts statewide and within rural communities and underserved populations.

• Arts Education: Arts Education (Education) provides educational opportunities in any arts discipline for arts in the school environment, out-of-school learning, Early Childhood Development, adult life-long learning, and professional development.

• Presenting & Performing Arts: Literacy Arts, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Performing Arts (The Arts). Projects support programs or activities of organizations that present artists in performances, exhibitions, in-residency settings, online format, and televised broadcasts. 

A Community Arts Grant can be requested in the amount of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. A 1:1 match is required. This is a reimbursement grant program.

Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

The mission of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) is to promote, perpetuate, and preserve culture and the arts in Hawai‘i. SFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai‘i and the National Endowment for the Arts.

America250 Grant for Hawaiʻi Veterans

In celebration of the United States of America’s bicentennial, America250, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) allocated funding to state arts agencies nationwide to support arts projects celebrating the nation’s artistic heritage and creativity.

The project must celebrate America 250 through arts-based projects or programs directly focused on Hawaiʻi veterans. All project activities must be implemented in the State of Hawaiʻi. Proposals can include activities that honor veterans or improve the health and well-being of military and veteran communities. Examples of possible projects are arts and healing programs, visual arts, StoryCorps, spoken word, film, exhibition, performance, historical/heritage interpretations, and living history projects.

The NRA Foundation: Hawaii Grants support charitable purposes as defined by IRS 501(c)(3) regulations. Eligible organizations include recognized nonprofits, government entities, and specific educational institutions. Ineligible groups comprise labor organizations, private businesses, and individuals. Grant funding promotes firearms safety, education in shooting sports, and related research. The foundation focuses on advancing the shooting sports and improving public understanding of firearms, fostering a safer environment for all.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship supports graduate studies at the University of Hawai‘i, aimed at promoting better relations among the U.S., Asia, and the Pacific. Established in 1960, this fellowship seeks to enhance understanding through cooperative study and research. Eligible applicants include citizens and permanent residents from various countries in the Pacific, Southeast, South, and East Asia, who hold a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The Emergency Community Water Assistance Grants program in Hawaii and the Western Pacific provides crucial funding for communities facing emergencies that threaten their access to safe drinking water. This program supports rural areas by offering financial assistance for water transmission and source projects, helping to restore and maintain water supply systems after events like droughts, floods, or chemical spills. Eligible applicants include local governments and nonprofit organizations, ensuring broad access to essential resources.

The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation invites proposals for teacher training projects aimed at accredited or nearly accredited preschools in Hawaii. With grants up to $25,000, the Foundation supports initiatives that enhance teacher quality and retention, ensuring educators receive the necessary training. Eligible preschools must demonstrate commitment to faculty development and provide evidence of tax-exempt status. This initiative addresses the growing demand for well-trained preschool educators, ultimately benefiting children's educational outcomes.

Hawai‘i Sea Grant, part of a national network established in 1966, promotes the understanding and stewardship of marine and coastal resources through applied research, outreach, and education. The upcoming Biennial Research Competition focuses on critical research tracks including Island Sustainability and Resilience, Ocean Acidification, and Aquaculture. By supporting multidisciplinary initiatives, Hawai‘i Sea Grant aims to address pressing public concerns and disseminate valuable information across Hawai‘i and the Pacific.

The 2025 Pacific Islands Indigenous Science Competition, hosted by Hawai‘i Sea Grant, invites proposals that center Indigenous methodologies for co-managing coastal and marine resources. With funding available between $25,000 and $50,000 for 3 to 6 selected projects, the initiative aims to enhance resource stewardship, community governance, and cultural practices. This opportunity encourages research that integrates Indigenous knowledge and ecological concerns, fostering collaborations that promote resilient communities across the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands.
