Scholarships

Community Foundation of Henderson County's Scholarship Program began in 1984. Thanks to the generosity of passionate donors, over 2,000 traditional and non-traditional students have been provided more than $10 million in scholarships to pursue higher education.

Sigrun M. Mapes Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is to provide financial support to a student seeking to attain a degree in the field of Nursing at an accredited institution. Student must be accepted or enrolled into a Nursing program at an accredited community college, meet and maintain the academic standards as set by the educational institution, be a legal resident of Henderson County, and demonstrate financial need.

The Career Development Grant for Postdoctoral Women awards up to $2,000 to 5-8 eligible postdoctoral women for travel to meetings, laboratory visits, or courses to enhance their research and leadership skills. This grant, offered by the American Society for Microbiology, aims to support women with significant scientific achievements in their professional development while encouraging ongoing engagement with ASM.

The Community Foundation of Grant County offers over 120 scholarship opportunities for U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens pursuing higher education at accredited institutions. Jane and Kevin Baird Scholarship

This scholarship supports a student that demonstrates financial need, but is not eligible for a Pell grant. Candidates for this scholarship will have a weighted GPA between 3.0 and 4.0 and be attending an accredited institution, including vocational, technical, trade, college, or university schools. 

The William A. Lumpkin Endowed Scholarship, established in 2019 by Mr. Lumpkin, supports African-American students from Dayton Public or Trotwood-Madison High Schools. This scholarship aims to enhance educational opportunities, promoting the belief that diverse experiences can lead to success. With a focus on leadership, a minimum GPA of 2.5, and acceptance into accredited colleges, this fund empowers students to pursue their dreams and fulfill their potential in higher education.

Mary Evelyn and Harry Laurent Scholarship

The applicant must be a graduating senior or a graduate of a public or private high school in Henderson and shall graduate in the top 25 percent of his or her graduating high school class. Student must be a candidate for an associate, bachelor, advanced, or professional degree from a fully accredited college, university, technical institute, or community college. Although a specific vocational objective is not necessary, the recipient should evidence a clear-cut educational objective in their course of study.

The Siebenthal and Block Scholarship Program, administered by Scholarship America, supports students from Peoria Manual High School pursuing higher education. Martha Sales Schoch Scholarship

Applicant must be enrolled as a senior in a public, parochial or private school or be a graduate of such school and intend to enroll in a degree-granting program in an accredited college, university, community college or technical school. Applicant must be an active member of Fletcher United Methodist Church for two years prior to applying for this scholarship. Applicant should have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a minimum SAT score of 800. The applicant should demonstrate financial need and should demonstrate involvement in United Methodist activities. Applicant must be of good moral character and reflect a willingness to work, learn, and pursue an education.

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, established by Scholarship America Inc., provides need-based scholarships for postsecondary education to dependents of 9/11 victims. Ethel T. and Charles T. Larus Educational Scholarship

This scholarship is for needy and worthy students who are Henderson County residents, regardless of where they attend high school. Recipients must

Armstrong County Community Foundation (The Community Foundation Serving the Heart of Western Pennsylvania)

In 1997 Merchants National Bank, an Armstrong County community bank, marked its 100th anniversary. The centennial celebration included a unique expression of gratitude to the community in the form of $100,000 to be used as a seed fund to initiate a community foundation for Armstrong County. The bank challenged the community to keep the principal balance of the endowed funds intact and spend only a portion of the interest earnings to ensure a lasting legacy.

The Armstrong County Community Foundation, a public nonprofit corporation,

Marsha J. Alico Memorial Scholarship

Marsha Alico taught for Apollo-Ridge School District from 1972-2006, with 30 of those years teaching third grade. (A few of her later students were children of her early students!) Throughout all of those classes, there was not a single kid she did not care deeply about; and she kept every card and homemade gift they gave her, some for decades. She spent evenings, school breaks, and summers finding and working on new ways to engage her students; and she talked about her “kids” daily until her family felt like we knew them too. 

Shortly after she retired, Marsha, who laughed easily and rarely stood still, was diagnosed with cancer and died after a courageous nine-month battle.  In her memory, we hope to help the next generation of teachers and child advocates pursue their degrees and inspire future kids.

The Dayton Daily News Si Burick Scholarship honors the legacy of sports editor Si Burick, awarded annually to a graduating senior from specific counties in Ohio pursuing journalism. The scholarship emphasizes academic success and journalistic aspirations, supporting students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Established by The Dayton Foundation, this initiative reflects a commitment to fostering talent in journalism while contributing to the community's cultural and educational landscape.

The Dorothy Reynolds Scholarship, established by The Dayton Foundation in 2013, supports seniors graduating from Dayton Public High Schools or members of St. Benedict the Moor Church. Eligible candidates must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrate leadership, provide community service records, and show financial need. Additionally, applicants must submit proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university. This scholarship aims to empower students in the Greater Dayton area to pursue higher education.

The Dunbar High School - Carson/Byars Scholarship Fund, established by The Dayton Foundation, supports graduating seniors from Dayton Public Schools who have participated in varsity sports. This scholarship aims to recognize scholar-athletes who demonstrate academic excellence, community involvement, and personal growth. By providing financial assistance, the fund encourages these students to pursue higher education and continue their journey of success. The Dayton Foundation, a key philanthropic partner in Greater Dayton, has a long history of supporting education and community development.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is set to release a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) focused on the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics. This initiative aims to explore how genomics can enhance health and well-being while addressing its broader societal impacts. This scholarship is to provide financial assistance for students who have demonstrated a passionate desire for advanced education in art or writing. Applicant must be a graduate of a Henderson County high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
