Applications are reviewed using criteria aligned with the Foundation’s priorities, including community impact, feasibility, sustainability, and readiness to implement the proposed work in the Kansas or western Missouri rural community. 

This opportunity increases access to mental health support by expanding services, strengthening local care networks, and promoting prevention, harm reduction, and behavioral health education. Projects should create supportive environments that reduce stigma, increase awareness, and help residents access appropriate care. Applicants should plan to report on services delivered, residents served, improvements in access or awareness, and partnerships that enhance local mental health support.

The NNLM Region 5 Professional Development Award offers funding for individuals at member institutions to enhance their knowledge and skills in health-related areas. This initiative aims to support meetings, workshops, and training that focus on health literacy, public health, and evidence-based practices. Award recipients are selected based on their scholarship in health education and physical education, demonstrating commitment to excellence since the organization's founding in 1885. SHAPE America advocates for quality education and promotes the well-being of preK-12 students across the United States.

Kansas health and physical education professionals working in community or school health education can access recognition through the E.B. Henderson Award, honoring minority SHAPE America members. This Society of Health and Physical Educators award celebrates long-term scholarship, mentorship, and service that expand opportunities for ethnic minorities and underserved populations in health, PE, and related fields across the U.S.

Early-career health and physical education researchers in the U.S., including those based in Kansas, can receive recognition and support for curriculum and instruction scholarship through the Helen M. Heitmann Young Scholar Award. Focused on advancing community health education and K–12 instruction, SHAPE America honors members with an emerging record of impactful, innovative research.

Individual SHAPE America members in the U.S. with at least ten years of membership and prior national recognition can receive the Luther Halsey Gulick Award honoring exceptional service in health and physical education. This top Society of Health and Physical Educators distinction may interest Kansas professionals advancing community health education and K–12 physical activity.

Graduate students in the U.S. studying psychomotor measurement and evaluation can receive support for professional expenses through this award, which may benefit those engaged in community health education in Kansas. With a mission to advance health and physical education, SHAPE America provides this scholarship to SHAPE America and Measurement and Evaluation SIG members with at least one year remaining in their programs.

Individual SHAPE America members active in health, physical education, and community health education, including those in Kansas, can be nominated for the Measurement and Evaluation Honor Award recognizing outstanding contributions to the Measurement and Evaluation SIG. With a mission to advance professional practice, Society of Health and Physical Educators honors leaders shaping evaluation and research in school and community health programs.

With a mission to advance professional practice in health and physical education, Society of Health and Physical Educators provides Kansas community health education leaders with a Measurement and Evaluation Lifetime Achievement Award. Current SHAPE America members with a substantial scholarly record in measurement and evaluation may be recognized for their career-long impact on school and community health education.

Current SHAPE America members planning projects that expand opportunities for girls and women in sports can apply for the NAGWS Legacy Award, a US $1,000 grant for research, professional development, after-school programs, or similar initiatives. Kansas community health education efforts that promote female sports participation and leadership may be eligible.

Kansas community health education and related nonprofits can access funding through the AES Hawaii Foundation for programs in social justice and energy equality, education and workforce development, environmental stewardship, and community health and resilience. Organizations must serve communities within the foundation’s geographic focus areas, with some consideration for broader, statewide initiatives.

Master’s students in school-based health education programs at accredited U.S. colleges or universities, including those in Kansas, can receive the Society of Health and Physical Educators’ Barbara A. Cooley Master’s Scholarship. Awards provide US $1,000 for any personal or educational use plus a one-year SHAPE America student membership for community health education–focused graduate students.

Kansas undergraduate students majoring in school-based health education at accredited U.S. colleges can receive a US $1,000 Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship for general educational support. Kansas community health education efforts may benefit when eligible students gain this assistance and a complimentary one-year SHAPE America student membership from the Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Kansas 501(c)(3) nonprofits hosting community wellness, health education, or physical fitness events can access funding through Better Health Together’s Community Sponsorship program. Grants up to US $5,000 support community events and engagement activities that promote wellness and elevate community voices; organizations are limited to one sponsorship per year and should apply 6–8 weeks before the event.

Kansas community health organizations, especially 501(c)(3) nonprofits with at least one year of outcomes, can access funding through the H Hovnanian Family Foundation for community health education, public health, and emergency response projects. Grants up to US $10,000 prioritize work in New Jersey but may support U.S. programs that fit its focus areas and impact goals.

Substance Use Continuum of Care Fund

Overview

The Substance Use Continuum of Care Fund (SUF) launched in 2024 as a coordinated review and funding recommendation process for the Alcohol Tax Fund (ATF) and local portions of the Opioid Settlement Fund (OSF)—allowing applicants to apply for both in a single application. 

Since the 1970s, UCS has increased resources and access to substance abuse services through the Drug and Alcoholism Council (DAC) of Johnson County—a volunteer advisory body that oversees county alcohol/drug planning and allocations. This benefits the community by preventing and treating substance abuse, leading to lower healthcare costs, reduced crimes, child abuse and neglect, and increased employment and productivity.

The Cornerstone of Community Health Award, presented by the Manhattan Community Health Foundation (MCHF), honors individuals or families who exemplify impactful leadership in promoting community health. This accolade celebrates those who invest in innovative solutions, build strong partnerships, and champion equitable healthcare access. By recognizing their dedication, MCHF aims to inspire others to contribute to the well-being of the Manhattan community, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of background or income.

Awards

Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award

The Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award recognizes a healthcare professional who has made outstanding contributions to improving osteoporosis care and increasing community awareness about bone health. This award will be presented annually to a healthcare professional residing and working in the United States or its territories.

The Executive Committee of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation’s (BHOF’s) Board of Trustees will review nominations and select the recipient.

The award winner will be notified and announced in May, in recognition of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. The recipient will receive a plaque and a financial award (currently $1,000) to support community service efforts initiatives related to osteoporosis and bone health.

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

Prize Summary

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research.

Funded by a major bequest to the AACR from cancer research pioneer Dr. June L. Biedler, a scientist, mentor, and former member of the AACR Board of Directors, this prize showcases outstanding examples of cancer journalism and recognizes individual professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative, and compelling stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy.

The prize provides an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a commemorative award.

Managed by the CDC Foundation, this prize honors substantial public health education contributions; Kansas-based leaders or those serving Kansas communities may be strong candidates when nominated by others.

Nonprofits, schools, government, and religious entities in Kansas can receive up to US $10,000 for preventative healthy living and public health programs through the Kansas Health Foundation Fund for GSCF. Greater Salina Community Foundation supports community health education and wellness initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles and environments, primarily benefiting Saline County residents.

Nonprofit and charitable organizations working on global health, K-12 STEM education, or economic mobility initiatives, including community health education in Kansas, can seek funding from Lilly Foundation. The foundation supports programs improving access to quality healthcare, strengthening STEM pathways for low-income students, and advancing workforce readiness and housing stability, with an emphasis on measurable charitable outcomes.
