Borealis Philanthropy is a philanthropic social justice intermediary that works to resource grassroots leaders and social justice movements for transformative change. We help funders expand their reach and strengthen their impact through donor collaboratives that support a variety of issues, communities, and movements. For the Disability Inclusion Fund at Borealis, part of our efforts for disability rights and justice includes the ways disability and technology are working towards shared goals in our movements. The DIF x Tech initiative, supported by the Ford Foundation’s Technology & Society Program and the MacArthur Foundation’s Technology in the Public Interest, invites proposals that are working to bring about transformational change at the intersections of disability, justice, and technology

About the Disability Inclusion Fund and DIF x Tech

The Disability Inclusion Fund (DIF) supports U.S.-based groups run by and for people with disabilities to lead transformational change. The Fund is supported by donors including the Presidents’ Council on Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy, which is comprised of foundation presidents who are committed to disability inclusion as part of improving diversity, equity, and inclusion within philanthropy.

Part of the efforts of disability rights and justice includes the ways disability and technology are working towards shared goals in our movements. This newly launched initiative is housed at the Disability Inclusion Fund (DIF) and supported by Ford Foundation’s Technology & Society Program and the MacArthur Foundation’s Technology in the Public Interest. 

DIF x Tech Fund Values

All Disability x Tech award decisions will align with the DIF guiding values. The DIF guiding values are:

• Participation: Movement funding accountable to the disability rights movement. Those impacted by injustice/exclusion should be involved in strategies to advance justice/inclusion.
• Intersectionality: Acknowledging that disabled people have multiple and intersecting social and political identities that can influence their ability to have access and inclusion including race, gender identity, class, sexual orientation.
• Radical inclusion: Deeply committed to removing barriers and ensuring access so that those most affected by intersecting identities can participate, valuing lived experience.
• Leadership of those most impacted by ableism: Emphasis is given to organizations led by people subject to systemic bias and impacted by underrepresentation, particularly disabled people of color, queer, gender nonconforming and women with disabilities.
• Cross-movement solidarity: Intentional focus on collaboration and bridge- building amongst disability justice activists and across movements.
• Sustainability: Resources and tools that support the growth of grassroots disabled-led organizations, and expand operational capacities for ongoing movement building. 

What we fund

We invite proposals that are at the nexus of technology, disability rights and justice. This opportunity may be a good fit for your organization, if you are doing work in any of these areas below:

• Disabled people sharing technical skills and knowledge with others in the community.
• Disabled people leading policy, rights, and disability justice activism work related to tech. 
• Disabled people participate in all stages of the design and development of new tech that will enrich lives of people with disabilities.
• Enabling collective and equitable access to digital infrastructure. 
• Expanding the participation, leadership, and thought partnership of overlooked and under-resourced people with disabilities in all areas of the technology sector.
• Partnerships between disability-focused engineering design labs and maker spaces within schools, centers for independent living, or local nonprofit organizations.
• Permissible Policy Work:
  • We may support nonpartisan policy education and advocacy related to disability and technology. Any lobbying must remain within applicable 501(c)(3) limits and Borealis grant restrictions.

The PCA J.P. Gleason Research Fellowship Program, offered by the Portland Cement Association, supports graduate students in engineering and physical sciences. The program aims to enhance public understanding of cement and concrete uses while addressing urgent sustainability challenges. Each fellowship provides a $35,000 grant to cover educational expenses, fostering research that optimizes cement manufacturing and promotes environmental sustainability, particularly in the context of climate change.

The NCMA Education and Research Foundation Grant aims to support the concrete masonry and hardscape industry through research and educational initiatives. With over $2 million invested, the Foundation invites proposals from qualified professionals, emphasizing national and regional benefits. Eligible projects should focus on workforce development, educational opportunities for students, and collaborative efforts with other organizations. Notably, certain entities, such as those involved in political campaigns or proprietary projects, are ineligible for funding.

The John and Marlene Heslip Architecture Student Scholarship Program supports full-time undergraduate and graduate architecture students at accredited institutions in the U.S. and Canada. With a focus on innovative design using manufactured concrete masonry and hardscape products, the program awards a $5,000 scholarship each academic year. The scholarship aims to advance the education of future architects while fostering a commitment to excellence and diversity in the field.

The HuFriedyGroup/Esther Wilkins Instrument Scholarships, sponsored by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), support students enrolled in accredited dental hygiene programs in the U.S. This scholarship provides recipients with up to $1,000 worth of dental hygiene instruments of their choice. Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be ADHA members. This initiative seeks to enhance educational opportunities and promote professional growth among future dental hygienists.

The Dr. Esther Wilkins Scholarship, offered by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), supports students pursuing advanced degrees in dental hygiene education. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program and have completed at least one year of study. The scholarship awards $2,000 annually and emphasizes the importance of professional membership in ADHA. This initiative fosters career development and enhances educational opportunities for future dental hygiene educators.

The Crest Oral-B Laboratories Dental Hygiene Scholarships, sponsored by Procter & Gamble, support students enrolled in accredited dental hygiene programs in the U.S. These scholarships aim to promote professional excellence and quality research in dental hygiene. Applicants should have completed at least one year of their curriculum and be a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA). Award amounts are typically $1,000, with the number of awards varying annually.

The James S.T. Yao Resident Research Award encourages early-career physicians in the U.S. and Canada to engage in groundbreaking research on vascular diseases and therapies. Awarded by the SVS Basic and Translational Research Committee, it includes a $5,000 prize, a presentation opportunity at the Vascular Annual Meeting, and a subscription to the Journal of Vascular Surgery. This award honors the legacy of Dr. James S.T. Yao, a prominent figure in vascular research.

The Headache Medicine Fellowship aims to enhance training in headache medicine by supporting programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Targeting regions with workforce challenges, the fellowship encourages clinical practice, research, and education to address healthcare disparities. Preference is given to institutions that serve underserved populations and demonstrate a commitment to mentorship and expert guidance for fellows. This initiative seeks to improve understanding and treatment of headache conditions.

The Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis Fellowship, supported by Pfizer, Inc., aims to enhance training for healthcare professionals in recognizing and managing ATTR cardiac amyloidosis. This competitive program focuses on clinical practice, research, and education, fostering a deeper understanding of the condition. It specifically targets fellowship programs for Cardiologists and Advanced Practice Providers in Heart Failure, ensuring a strong emphasis on advancing knowledge and care in this critical area of cardiology.

The SPFFA Educational Scholarship provides financial support of $5000 for university candidates aiming to teach French in primary and secondary schools. To be eligible, applicants must be American citizens or resident aliens, preferably enrolled in a School of Education and pursuing a Master in Teaching with a focus on French. Additionally, applicants need to maintain a GPA above 3.00, ensuring commitment to their educational goals.

The NIDCR Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award aims to enhance the diversity of the dental, oral, and craniofacial research workforce. This program supports exceptional graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds as they transition from PhD or dual degree programs (F99) to mentored postdoctoral positions (K00). Key deadlines for applications span from August 2024 to April 2027, ensuring ample opportunities for eligible candidates to apply.

The ACI Presidents' Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports graduate students in construction, design, education, or materials. Awardees receive a $10,000 stipend for educational expenses, recognition in industry publications, and travel support for two conventions. This fellowship emphasizes mentorship and professional development, ensuring that recipients are well-prepared for their future careers. The Burg-Coleman Iowa State 77 ACI Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in civil engineering focused on concrete structures or materials. Recipients receive a $10,000 stipend for educational expenses, recognition in Concrete International magazine, and coverage of travel costs for two ACI conventions. The ACI Foundation offers the Robert F. Mast Memorial Fellowship for graduate students in structural engineering, focusing on reinforced concrete design. This prestigious fellowship includes a $10,000 educational stipend, recognition in Concrete International magazine, coverage of travel expenses to ACI conventions, and mentorship opportunities. International students enrolled in institutions in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico are eligible, provided they demonstrate English proficiency. The fellowship aims to support the next generation of leaders in the concrete industry.

The S.P. Shah Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports PhD students focused on concrete materials with a $10,000 stipend for educational expenses. Recipients gain recognition in Concrete International magazine, mentorship, and coverage for travel to ACI conventions. The fellowship encourages international students attending institutions in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, and requires no internship. Finalists must attend an interview at the Spring ACI Convention, making this an excellent opportunity for aspiring leaders in the concrete industry.

The ACI Foundation Fellowship supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in the concrete industry. Annually, ten fellowships are awarded, each providing a $10,000 educational stipend for tuition and related expenses. Recipients also receive recognition in Concrete International magazine, travel support for ACI conventions, and mentorship opportunities. Students from U.S., Canada, or Mexico can apply, and proficiency in English is required. The fellowship aims to foster the next generation of leaders in concrete innovation.

The ACI Foundation Concrete Materials Fellowship supports students pursuing careers in concrete materials, providing a $10,000 educational stipend for tuition and related expenses. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, this fellowship emphasizes innovation in concrete applications for new construction and repairs. Recipients gain industry recognition and mentorship, and are encouraged to complete internships. With a commitment to fostering future leaders, the fellowship promotes personal development and career readiness in the concrete industry.

The Charles Pankow Student Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports undergraduate and graduate students in concrete-related studies. Awardees receive a $10,000 educational stipend, recognition in Concrete International, and travel expenses for ACI conventions. To qualify, students must complete an internship in a construction environment before the award year. This fellowship not only fosters educational growth but also connects students with industry mentors, preparing them for successful careers in the concrete industry.

The Don Marks Memorial Fellowship, managed by the ACI Foundation, offers $10,000 to undergraduate and graduate students interested in a hands-on career in concrete construction. Recipients receive educational stipends, recognition in industry publications, and support for travel to ACI conventions. This fellowship emphasizes practical experience without the need for internships, aiming to enhance the educational journey of students passionate about concrete and construction.

The Nicholas F. Maloof, Jr. GA Chapter ACI Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees related to the concrete industry, focusing on construction or building material sciences. Eligible candidates must have an endorsement from a Georgia Chapter ACI member and describe their ties to Georgia in their application. The fellowship provides a $10,000 educational stipend, recognition in publications, and travel support for ACI conventions, fostering the next generation of industry leaders.

The Bristol Bay Foundation offers a Higher Education Scholarship Program supporting both full-time and part-time students pursuing 4-year or advanced degrees. Eligible applicants must be shareholders of the BBNC or their descendants, have a high school diploma or GED, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Scholarships are based on academic performance and life experiences, with applications due in April for the next academic year.

The Career-Focused Vocational Education (CFVE) Scholarship Program supports Bristol Bay Native Corporation shareholders and their descendants in pursuing vocational training for careers such as piloting, maritime, and cosmetology. This initiative emphasizes cultural heritage and aims to enhance long-term employment opportunities in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska. Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 while enrolled in an approved program.

The Grassroots Grants Program (GGP) aims to enhance participation in golf among underrepresented communities, including racial minorities, women, and veterans. Launched in May 2021, it has awarded $1.8 million to 155 organizations, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sport. The program supports tax-exempt organizations focused on self-sustainability and offers funding for golf instruction, equipment, and access to facilities. Priority is given to those not receiving substantial backing from major golf organizations.

This grant opportunity aims to reduce sleep health disparities through non-pharmacological interventions. It supports research that examines sleep as a modifiable factor influencing health outcomes among populations facing health disparities. The initiative highlights the importance of promoting sleep health in various communities, ensuring equitable access to resources and interventions. Deadlines for applications span from October 2024 to June 2027, allowing multiple opportunities for researchers to apply and contribute to this vital area of health research.

The NCI Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award supports new clinicians committed to research in community oncology and cancer prevention. This funding aims to facilitate their transition to independent research careers and advanced funding mechanisms. Scholars can lead independent community-based clinical trials, conduct ancillary studies, or gain valuable research experience, specifically targeting underserved communities. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant's organization.
