Roy S. Bates Scholarship

Roy S. Bates (1916-2004)

Roy Bates was born August 28, 1916, in a farmhouse in Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio. A breach baby, Roy’s arms and legs were broken during delivery; miraculously, the baby survived and the only permanent impairment was a crooked right arm that couldn’t be raised above the shoulder. Roy was a bright, precocious child who entered Chester High School at age 13 where he played on the varsity basketball and baseball teams and graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1933.

Bates attended the College of Wooster where he was an outstanding intramural basketball and baseball player. After graduating from Wooster in 1937, Roy accepted a position teaching social studies at Chester High School. He was appointed Chester’s basketball coach in 1938, and he became the baseball coach in 1942. When Chester became a part of Northwestern High School in 1951, Bates was appointed basketball and baseball coach at the new school. When his coaching career ended in 1967, his varsity coaching record stood at 475-52 in baseball and 441-84 in basketball. Bates was the first coach in Ohio history to win state championships in both baseball (1959) and basketball (1965, and he was the first coach to be elected to both the Ohio Coaches Baseball and Basketball Halls of Fame.

A world traveler, Bates led eight senior class trips, 12 basketball team trips and about 40 National Education Association trips to every continent except Antarctica. From 1948 to 2001, Bates conducted more than 14,500 sports shows on Wooster Radio. He also officiated basketball, baseball, and softball games for more than 30 years.

After Bates retired from Northwestern in 1977, he assisted with college basketball programs at Indiana University, Cornell University, the University of Colorado, and the College of Wooster. Through his personal investments, he established the Roy S. Bates Scholarship Fund at Wayne County Community Foundation to help student athletes pursue their dreams of higher education.

The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin offers a robust college scholarship program, providing over $325,000 annually to students in Portage and Waushara counties. Scholarships, ranging from $500 to $40,000, are available for high school seniors, college students, and non-traditional learners. The Dave Ragan Jr. Memorial Golf Scholarship, managed by the Coral Gables Community Foundation, offers financial support to graduating seniors with a passion for golf. This scholarship honors the legacy of Dave Ragan Jr. and aims to foster educational opportunities through sports. The Bill & Carol Rogacheski Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin, provides financial support to students in Portage and Waushara counties. With scholarships ranging from $500 to $40,000, it aims to assist both traditional and non-traditional learners pursuing full-time undergraduate studies or technical education, particularly in medical fields or as first responders. The AK Chen Memorial Scholarship Fund, administered by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, provides financial assistance to students pursuing higher education in Hawaii. The STRIDE Mentored Research Scholarship (SMRS), offered by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF), provides funding up to $10,000 for occupational therapy graduates and clinicians from underrepresented backgrounds to enhance their research representation. This scholarship supports participation in mentored research experiences at different institutions, focusing on building critical skills in research methods. By pairing awardees with experienced mentors, the program aims to foster diversity and inclusion within the occupational therapy field.

The Vida Wight Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Vida Luisa Demuth Wight, supports young women pursuing higher education in fields like dance, psychology, and agriculture. This scholarship aims to honor Vida's vibrant spirit and commitment to empowerment by aiding those who demonstrate passion for their studies and a strong work ethic. Preference is given to students of color, promoting diversity and inclusion in educational opportunities.

The Professional & Technical Training Scholarships-Mission San Rafael Scholarship, offered by 10,000 Degrees, aims to support Marin County students with financial need pursuing vocational programs that lead to a license or certificate. Eligible applicants include Marin residents or San Rafael Unified School District graduates, attending accredited training institutions. This initiative provides not only financial aid but also essential resources to ensure students' success in their educational journeys.

The Teaching Credential Scholarship, administered by 10,000 Degrees, offers two opportunities for aspiring educators. The Marin Retired Teachers Association Scholarship supports Marin County high school graduates pursuing fifth-year teaching credentials or master's degrees in education. Meanwhile, the Building Better Teachers Scholarship aids early care and education teachers in advancing their studies towards a bachelor's or master's degree. The Armstrong Concert Band Scholarship was established in 2006 to assist in funding the education of Armstrong Concert Band members.

The Spring Scholarships, offered by Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation (MVCF), provide vital tuition support for students pursuing higher education, including college and professional development programs. MVCF fosters community collaboration to enrich the cultural landscape and ensure the sustainability of the Island. Since 1982, their commitment has been to honor the past, support the present, and invest in the future of Martha’s Vineyard's diverse community.

The Data-Driven Reporting Project (DDRP) supports local news journalists and freelancers in the US and Canada, focusing on document-based investigative projects for underrepresented communities. It provides financial awards up to $35,000, covering 80% of project costs, along with specialized training on Google Journalist Studio tools. Recipients are encouraged to share their core source documents post-publication to benefit the journalism community. Applications are open to small to midsize newsrooms and freelance journalists with proven track records.

The Booker T. Jones Scholarship Fund offers $5,000 to students graduating from MINACT-run Job Corps programs who plan to attend college. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens with a high school diploma or GED, accepted at a four-year historically Black college or university, and have completed technical training at a MINACT Job Corps Center. This scholarship honors the legacy of Booker T. Jones, who dedicated his life to empowering disadvantaged communities through education.

The Bettye Smith Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund honors a dedicated advocate for education, offering two $10,000 scholarships annually to high school seniors in Warren County, MS. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records and demonstrate financial need. This scholarship celebrates the legacy of Ms. Brown, who inspired many to pursue their educational dreams, ensuring her commitment to academic excellence continues to impact future generations.

Leo S. Kijowski Memorial Scholarship

Leo S. Kijowski was a lifelong resident of Armstrong County who fought in the Korean War. While on patrol in Korea in October, 1951, a bomb exploded near him and burnt over 55% of his body, 30% of which were 3rd degree burns. Leo spent a total of two years at the Fort Sam Houston Burn Center and had his weight drop to as little as 75 lbs. He then spent two more years at the Aspinwall VA Hospital where he went through painful physical therapy and numerous plastic surgeries. At times during his hospitalization he came close to death.

Leo received numerous medals, including the Purple Heart for his service. Upon returning home, Leo spent much time recuperating in veteran’s hospitals, but he furthered his education by attending St. Vincent’s College, and was involved in citizen efforts to improve Ford City. He joined the Ford City Lion’s Club and became one of its most active and productive leaders. Leo was a Lion for over thirty five years, serving as the Club president and chairman of numerous committees. Not only was he instrumental in activities that raised money for building and maintaining the Ford City Public Library, but he also guided the efforts involving the design and the raising of funds to erect the monument to our nation’s veterans in Ford Park. He was an active promoter of the annual Candlelight Service each Memorial Day, the Meals on Wheels Program, and the Youth Work Referral Service. The Lions presented him with the Achievement Award in 1970, the District Service Award for Lionism in 1981, and the Outstanding Humanitarian Award to Lionism and Community in 1983. Leo was a member of the Ford City Planning and Zoning Commission for six years, he helped to formulate the Comprehensive Master Plan that made possible the renewal of Ford City during its Renaissance and was also involved in the planning and construction of the Ford Park gazebo. In 1995, he was inducted into the Ford City Hall of Fame. 

Leo lived to the age of 91 and found a way to continually selflessly volunteer in the local community in spite of all of his injuries.

Marsha J. Alico Memorial Scholarship

Marsha Alico taught for Apollo-Ridge School District from 1972-2006, with 30 of those years teaching third grade. (A few of her later students were children of her early students!) Throughout all of those classes, there was not a single kid she did not care deeply about; and she kept every card and homemade gift they gave her, some for decades. She spent evenings, school breaks, and summers finding and working on new ways to engage her students; and she talked about her “kids” daily until her family felt like we knew them too. 

Shortly after she retired, Marsha, who laughed easily and rarely stood still, was diagnosed with cancer and died after a courageous nine-month battle.  In her memory, we hope to help the next generation of teachers and child advocates pursue their degrees and inspire future kids.

Stephen Family Community

It was Kellie’s request that the Stephen family establish a scholarship in honor of his family, who all valued education.He wanted it in memory of him; his grandfather, Leroy Stephen, who was a bus driver at Randolph Central for years; his parents, Gerald and Patsy, who have always been great supporters of the schools; his wife, Cathy, who was also an educator; and his children, who received excellent educations here in Randolph County. His hope was that this scholarship could give back just a little bit of the great experiences the Stephen family received from Randolph County schools.

Virginia Davis Weber Scholarship

Virginia Ruth Davis Crew Weber was born in Winchester in 1909 to Earl C. and Mamie Davis. She graduated from Winchester High School with the Class of 1927, then attended the National College of Education in Evanston, IL, where she became certified as a teacher. Later she also attended Earlham College and Ball State University to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. “Miss Virginia,” as she was known to her elementary students, taught in Wilmette, IL, Winchester, and Centerville before retiring in 1973. 

The Virginia Davis Weber scholarship is given to a senior planning to further their education.

Stark Community FoundationStark Community Foundation is one of the area’s major sources of college scholarship support— thanks to the generosity of caring individuals, families and businesses that have created scholarship funds. The Foundation currently manages more than 100 scholarship funds that support hundreds of deserving students each year from Stark and Carroll counties. In 2025, more than $1,000,000 was awarded to local students to help them achieve their educational dreams.The Canton Professional Educators' Scholarships FundThe Canton Professional Educators’ Scholarships Fund was established to assist high school graduates enrolled in an academic plan (college/university, 2-year vocational, technical or advanced study). Applicants must be the natural or adopted child of a CPEA member, must have achieved a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above, and college students must be “a student in good standing.”Renewable scholarship: No

The JUF Springboard Access Grant aims to make Jewish programming more accessible for teens in grades 8-12 in the Chicago area. This grant covers up to 50% of the tuition costs for first-time participants in multi-day programs organized by approved Jewish nonprofits. It encourages teens to engage with their community and explore new interests while ensuring financial barriers are lowered. Eligible teens are expected to share their experiences with the organization after participating.
