Since awarding our first $500 scholarship in 1987, the Saginaw Community Foundation has awarded college scholarships to area students totaling more than $13.7 million, thanks to our generous donors. Each year, over 500 college-bound or career and technical education students benefit from our scholarship awards.

Active/Inactive Military and Military Veteran Scholarship

At a very early age in Alabama, Lee Essie Smith was a self-taught musician. After losing her mother as a young teenager, she began putting her God-given musical talent to work as a pianist for several churches. By the time she graduated from high school, she had learned the cosmetology trade and met Charlie McMillan, Jr.

After his wife’s death, Mr. McMillan continued his community service with the Democratic Party, Habitat for Humanity and Mt. Olive Baptist Church as an usher. Although he did not serve very long in the military, Mr. McMillan continues to exemplify the values and physical energy of the “Army Strong” slogan. He is the patriarch of the family – always dapper – and a regular attendee at church services.

Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation

The Minnesota Nurses Association Foundation (MNAF), a non-profit corporation affiliated with the Minnesota Nurses Association, provides funding for nursing research grants and scholarships.

Each year, MNAF provides thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants to members and students. They are excellent opportunities to advance the nursing profession through research and education. Members are encouraged to apply.

MNA Legacy Scholarships

Children, grandchildren, or dependents of active or retired MNA members in good standing are eligible to apply for an MNA Legacy Scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program.

John E. Taylor Family Endowed ROTC Scholarship

In 2008, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) John E. Taylor and his wife LTC Mary Beth Taylor established the John E. Taylor Family Endowed ROTC Scholarship with Benton Community Foundation. He and Mary Beth are committed to helping ROTC cadets finance their education through this annual scholarship award.

Dominique's Musician Corner Scholarship, established in 2016 in memory of Dominique Williams, supports students from Beaufort or Jasper Counties in South Carolina and Chatham County in Georgia pursuing post-secondary education in performing arts. This merit-based scholarship does not require financial information and focuses on specific eligibility criteria to ensure the most deserving candidates receive assistance in their artistic endeavors.

The Carolyn and Bill Franck Scholarship Fund, managed by the Community Foundation Serving Western Virginia, provides essential financial support for graduating high school seniors from Henry County or Martinsville pursuing post-secondary education in various fields. Eligible applicants must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 and demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA. This scholarship aims to empower deserving students by facilitating their educational aspirations in accredited institutions.

Jacob Saunders & John-Mark Nelson Endowed Scholarship

Since they were young boys, John-Mark Nelson and Jacob Saunders were endowed with a deep sense of appreciation for the sacrifices individuals have made for the good of others. It was this deep sense of respect toward selfless service and other-centeredness that led them to pursue a career in the Armed Forces. In their senior year at Oregon State University in the Army ROTC program, John-Mark and Jacob established this endowed scholarship, with the help of Lieutenant Colonel Mike Rainbolt, to carry on the tradition of service and promoting esprit-de-corps.

The Saunders & Nelson Scholarship is awarded annually to the junior Army ROTC cadet who most exemplifies honest, unselfish qualities to his/her classmates throughout the most demanding year of the program.

The Allen C. & Leurene F. Hodgkins Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, offers renewable scholarships for high school seniors or recent graduates from Lamoine, Maine. This fund supports those pursuing post-secondary education, prioritizing academic achievement and financial need. Founded in 1983, the Maine Community Foundation connects resources to enhance community well-being, ensuring that students from Lamoine can access the education they need to succeed.
