The PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction, offered by PEN America, recognizes a distinguished book of nonfiction published annually. The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts administers over 160 scholarships. Some of the funds help students from a particular school or area; others provide financial assistance to those pursuing a specific field of study; still others assist students that are most in need. Students who apply to the Scholarship program may be eligible for many of these funds. 

Scholarships are provided for one academic year and are not automatically renewed each year. You can reapply to our program every year you are going to attend college, and the application you submit that year will be considered for all scholarships for which you are eligible.

Hellespont Society Scholarship Fund

Supporting high school graduates who attend a two- or four-year college and are persons of Greek descent, with preference given to descendants of past Hellespont Society members.

Additional Guidelines

• Students can receive up to $3,000 in scholarships from the Community Foundation.
• Scholarship awards could impact the financial aid offered by a college, and students are advised to check with their college financial aid offices about this.

The Alice McCaffrey Scholarship Fund, established in 2013 by Saints John and Paul parishioners, honors Father Joseph McCaffrey on his 25th priestly anniversary. Named after his mother, Alice, the fund supports seminarians pursuing pastoral experiences beyond seminary training. Over the past four years, it has awarded $69,000 to nine seminarians, enriching their training by engaging in mission work across Brazil and Mexico. Applicants will be notified of their awards in April to plan their summers accordingly.

Scholarships

The CBCF scholarship is open each year. Scholarships awarded will be for the following academic year. Scholarships are available only to students who graduated from a high school in one of the counties in the CBCF Service Area: Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio. Thanks to our generous donors, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation (CBCF) offers scholarships to students from over 100 funds. 

Flinn - Dorothy and John Flinn Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is exclusively available to a Sinton or Taft ISD graduating senior, with a minimum 2.0 GPA, and the student must complete an essay on the applicant’s community service.

Helen & Bob Bintz Scholarship

The Bintz Scholarship, created in 2001, supports Catholic education and makes awards to any Marion County student to attend a Catholic university, especially the University of Dayton, the alma mater of many family members. The fund honors the parents of its creators, Patricia Kelly, Suzanne Burkhart, and MaryJo Balistreri.

Recipients of the Bintz Scholarship rank in the upper 25th percentile of their high school graduating class and/or maintain a college GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must have attended a high school located in Marion County for at least the 18 months prior to their application.

Booker T. Washington Scholarship

For African-American graduating high school seniors from Saline County High School.

Background

The Booker T. Washington scholarship fund was started with the proceeds from the sale of the former Booker T. Washington Negro Center, located at 345 N. Front. It was designed for African American children and was founded as a private enterprise by Miss Janet Porter in 1939. After her death in 1943, the center was operated by the Porter family with aid from the Community Chest. In 1978 the City completed construction of the Carver Center, and the Porter family felt the Booker T. Washington Center was no longer needed. They closed the center, donating all the equipment to the Carver Center, and the property was given to the YWCA. The Y sold the property and used the proceeds to establish the Booker T. Washington Scholarship Fund.

• Students graduating from any Saline County high school.

Renewals

Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for renewal by meeting the following:

• Recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student and provide a copy of their transcript.
• Recipients must be in good standing and maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Recipients may receive this scholarship for a total of 4 years.

Purpose

To provide a scholarship to a female Brown County resident who is graduating from high school or completing a G.E.D. and will be attending an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada, full-time or part-time, in the fall of the academic year following high school graduation.

Awards winners are chosen by P.E.O using the application process.

The Ronald and Wendy Smith Clinical Research Grant supports innovative studies in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery. Funded by the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, it aims to enhance patient care through research that leads to practical applications. The RedRover Relief Urgent Care Grants provide crucial financial assistance for pet guardians facing economic hardships due to life-threatening situations affecting their pets. With an average grant of $250, this program aims to bridge funding gaps for urgent veterinary care. Eligibility includes a diagnosis from a veterinarian and a household income below $60,000. Applicants can expect a response within two business days after submission. Updates and photos may be requested from grant recipients.

Ina White Hereford Memorial Scholarship

David J. White, son; Cozine A. White Short, daughter; and Mitzi Short, granddaughter, established this fund in memory of their mother and grandmother, Ina Fern (White) Hereford. This memorial fund initially provided scholarships for students, grades 3-6, attending the Gloria S. Friend Christian Academy at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Beginning in the fall of 2022, the Ina Fern (White) Hereford Scholarship provides financial support to college-bound youth who are members of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Ina Fern (White) Hereford (1910-2000) was born in North Wilkesboro, NC, and lived in Columbus, OH for most of her life. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church for over 60 years. She served as the church clerk and for 12 years, she served as the Church Secretary. Affectionately known as “Mother Dear,” her great mission in life was to be a teacher and storyteller. She told Bible stories at the Juvenile Detention Center located at 50 E. Mound Street for more than 16 years. She exemplified a tower of faith and strength in God. All whose lives were touched by this beloved Christian woman were truly blessed. She left a legacy that is admired and remembered.

The scholarship honors her legacy – her love for God and her church, her passion for education, and her tireless effort to “put feet on her prayers.”

The Carnegie-Whitney Grant, established by Andrew Carnegie in 1902, supports the creation of bibliographical aids for American libraries. Grants cover the preparation costs of reading lists and indexes, enhancing access to library resources. Jody & Doyle Fredrickson Nursing & Health Scholarship

For graduating seniors or graduates from a high school within the Dane G. Hansen Foundation service area, which is defined as the 26 counties in northwest Kansas north of I-70 and west of I-135/Hwy 81, who are pursuing a major in nursing or another health-related field. Preference will be given to students who are graduates of or who are qualified to graduate from Decatur Community High School- Oberlin, KS.

Background

The family and friends of Jody Fredrickson, desiring to continue her memory, established a scholarship to a student for the purpose of promoting continued education. Preference is given to the nursing field, but all other health related fields will be considered.

Applicant will provide three letters of recommendation from: a member of the clergy, an educator and a person of his/her choice.

James T. Alvey Visionary Scorpion Scholarship

For a senior at Oakland Mills High School, who plans to attend a two- or four-year college or university and seeks to create a brighter future for all.

This scholarship is offered in memory of J.T. Alvey, OMHS Class of 2006. The award seeks to empower innovative thinkers and passionate creators by providing financial support to a student who has demonstrated exceptional creativity in their chosen field, whether it be art, design, writing, technology, or beyond. This scholarship is designed to support students who push the boundaries of creativity in their academic pursuits, artistic endeavors, and/or innovative projects.

The Neal Foundation Trust Grant supports organizations dedicated to the humane treatment of animals. With a focus on local community projects, the foundation funds initiatives aimed at reducing pet overpopulation and alleviating animal suffering. Eligible programs include spay/neuter services, fostering, and humane education. The foundation prioritizes projects that demonstrate significant local impact, ensuring a compassionate approach to addressing the needs of abandoned and neglected animals.

Preference given to those who are active in school and extracurricular activities, who have demonstrated community responsibility through volunteer efforts, and who have held jobs in the hospitality industry and are excited to continue. Financial need will be considered.

Traverse City Administrators’ Association Scholarship Fund (Central, West, TC High)

Available to a worthy senior who is pursuing a career in education.

One scholarship is awarded annually at each Central, West, and Traverse City High School.

The Scott Family Scholarship, offered by the Greater Salina Community Foundation, supports graduating high school seniors in Republic County, Kansas, particularly those from USD 109. This scholarship aims to assist students in pursuing further education, emphasizing academic excellence with a minimum 2.5 GPA requirement. Eligible recipients can renew the scholarship for up to four years, provided they maintain full-time enrollment and meet GPA criteria, ensuring long-term educational support.
