Substance Use Continuum of Care Fund

Overview

The Substance Use Continuum of Care Fund (SUF) launched in 2024 as a coordinated review and funding recommendation process for the Alcohol Tax Fund (ATF) and local portions of the Opioid Settlement Fund (OSF)—allowing applicants to apply for both in a single application. 

Since the 1970s, UCS has increased resources and access to substance abuse services through the Drug and Alcoholism Council (DAC) of Johnson County—a volunteer advisory body that oversees county alcohol/drug planning and allocations. This benefits the community by preventing and treating substance abuse, leading to lower healthcare costs, reduced crimes, child abuse and neglect, and increased employment and productivity.

The NNLM Region 5 Professional Development Award offers funding for individuals at member institutions to enhance their knowledge and skills in health-related areas. This initiative aims to support meetings, workshops, and training that focus on health literacy, public health, and evidence-based practices. Kansas health and physical education professionals working in community or school health education can access recognition through the E.B. Henderson Award, honoring minority SHAPE America members. This Society of Health and Physical Educators award celebrates long-term scholarship, mentorship, and service that expand opportunities for ethnic minorities and underserved populations in health, PE, and related fields across the U.S.

Early-career health and physical education researchers in the U.S., including those based in Kansas, can receive recognition and support for curriculum and instruction scholarship through the Helen M. Heitmann Young Scholar Award. Focused on advancing community health education and K–12 instruction, SHAPE America honors members with an emerging record of impactful, innovative research.

Kansas 501(c)(3) nonprofits hosting community wellness, health education, or physical fitness events can access funding through Better Health Together’s Community Sponsorship program. Grants up to US $5,000 support community events and engagement activities that promote wellness and elevate community voices; organizations are limited to one sponsorship per year and should apply 6–8 weeks before the event.

The HDR Foundation Grant Cycle supports community organizations aligned with HDR's values, focusing on education, healthy communities, and environmental stewardship. Awards

Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award

The Robert F. Gagel, M.D. Community Leadership Award recognizes a healthcare professional who has made outstanding contributions to improving osteoporosis care and increasing community awareness about bone health. This award will be presented annually to a healthcare professional residing and working in the United States or its territories.

The Executive Committee of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation’s (BHOF’s) Board of Trustees will review nominations and select the recipient.

The award winner will be notified and announced in May, in recognition of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. The recipient will receive a plaque and a financial award (currently $1,000) to support community service efforts initiatives related to osteoporosis and bone health.

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

Prize Summary

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research.

Funded by a major bequest to the AACR from cancer research pioneer Dr. June L. Biedler, a scientist, mentor, and former member of the AACR Board of Directors, this prize showcases outstanding examples of cancer journalism and recognizes individual professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative, and compelling stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy.

The prize provides an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a commemorative award.

Managed by the CDC Foundation, this prize honors substantial public health education contributions; Kansas-based leaders or those serving Kansas communities may be strong candidates when nominated by others.

Nonprofits, schools, government, and religious entities in Kansas can receive up to US $10,000 for preventative healthy living and public health programs through the Kansas Health Foundation Fund for GSCF. Greater Salina Community Foundation supports community health education and wellness initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles and environments, primarily benefiting Saline County residents.

Nonprofit and charitable organizations working on global health, K-12 STEM education, or economic mobility initiatives, including community health education in Kansas, can seek funding from Lilly Foundation. The foundation supports programs improving access to quality healthcare, strengthening STEM pathways for low-income students, and advancing workforce readiness and housing stability, with an emphasis on measurable charitable outcomes.

Nonprofits, public charities, and U.S. governmental organizations in Kansas working on community health education, prevention, or chronic illness care can receive US $5,000 to advance diagnostic screening and testing. Quest Diagnostics Foundation supports efforts improving cardiometabolic and maternal/child health, including policy, programming, and education that strengthen local health outcomes and autonomy.
