This scholarship shall be awarded to individuals with financial need who are pursuing a degree in any medically related field.
James B. Murphy Firefighter of the Year
The Firefighter of the Year award is an annual award bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the characteristics of a firefighter with an outstanding record of fire service achievements. Firefighter characteristics are not restricted to heroic action but encompass all aspects of a productive, dedicated and professional service at all levels.
If heroic action is one of the reasons that the individual is being nominated, the Subcommittee on Awards for the Executive Committee must find no hard evidence that the individual was in violation of generally accepted safety standards at the time of the action. Such standards include, but are not limited to, abstinence from the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of applicable protective equipment such as protective clothing and breathing apparatus, and adherence to accepted operating procedures, where these criteria were applicable at the time of the action.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide a scholarship for higher education at accredited institutions including but not limited to: vocational, technical, college, or university levels of education. Assistance is for a graduating senior or a graduate of Henderson County or the surrounding counties served by the Foundation in North Carolina public schools, leading to a degree. Each Henderson County Public High School may nominate one male and one female graduating senior. The nominee must have played in three varsity sports for two or more years during grades 9-12 (one of those years being their senior year). The nominee must have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Financial need is not a requirement.

Charlie Renfrow Trust Scholarship
Applicant must be a graduate of a high school located in Henderson County. Applicant must demonstrate financial need in pursuing a post-high school educational or training program at a trade school, technical college, community college, university, graduate school or other recognized educational institution. It is the guiding principle of this scholarship that applicants demonstrate and practice good sportsmanship.

For graduating seniors from a Washington County high school, a non-traditional senior living in Washington County, or a young adult through age 21 having completed high school requirements who has advocated for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Questioning, Queer, Asexual, or Allied (LGBTQA) community. Students may be planning to enroll/enrolled in a certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree program. With regards to the publicity of the scholarship, students selected to receive an award will be provided with an opportunity to allow or decline the release of their name.
