The Fran and Frederick Hamerstrom Award is a non-monetary award that recognizes an individual who has contributed significantly to the understanding of raptor ecology and natural history. The award has no restrictions, but membership in the RRF is encouraged. Nomination packets can be submitted in the spring. Recipients will be announced at the annual meeting. Recipients are invited to give a plenary lecture at the subsequent RRF annual meeting. 

About The Hamerstroms: The award was established in 1990 to recognize and honor the Hamerstrom’s contributions to our understanding of raptor natural history and ecology through their long-term ecological studies. Between them, during their lifetime of research they authored and co-authored over 240 scientific papers, books, and reviews. Fran and Hammie moved from Boston to the midwest, where Fran was Aldo Leopold’s only female graduate student. They settled down in Plainfield Wisconsin where a small army of young researchers got their start in the field helping out on studies of harriers and prairie chickens.

Partners for Raptors Lifetime Achievement Award

The Partners for Raptors Lifetime Achievement Award honors outstanding individuals who have dedicated their lives to raptor research and conservation. These notable awardees are recognized for their significant contributions to the study and conservation of birds of prey, as well as their outstanding achievements gained through innovative field work, impactful collaborative partnerships, and a lifetime of inclusive interactions with their peers and the public focused on raptors. This is a joint award originally given by the Raptor Research Foundation in partnership with The Peregrine Fund. Going forward, we welcome partnerships with other raptor-oriented organizations, depending on the nominee’s involvement with both the proposing organization and RRF. The award is intended to complement RRF’s Hamerstrom (primarily academic focused) and Cade (primarily conservation focused) awards. 

This is a non-monetary award, designated with a plaque and a RRF resolution honoring the awardee.

The nomination committee consists of representatives of both RRF and the partner organization. Once a nominee is identified, the boards of both the RRF and the partner organization will ratify the nomination.

William Andersen Student Presentation Awards

The Awards: The William C. Andersen Memorial Awards are given to both the best student oral and poster presentation at the annual RRF meeting. This award can only be given to a student once per degree (bachelor, master, or doctorate). To be eligible, a student must be senior author and presenter of the paper or poster.

Students wishing to apply for this award should indicate their interest by checking the box on the abstract submission form. 

Amount

The poster award recipient receives $325, 1-year free membership to RRF, and waived page charges to publish their research in the Journal of Raptor Research. The recipient must be the primary author and the paper must reflect what the award was for.

About William Andersen

The William C. Andersen Award was established in 1982 in memory of Bill Andersen, who drowned in 1980 while canoeing the Churchill River in Manitoba during a Peregrine Falcon survey. Dr. Andersen was a chemistry professor, but his first love was raptors. He established the Ornithology Research Center at Otero Jr. College in La Junta Colorado, as a medium for raising funds for the field research he conducted with his students. His interest in raptors of southeastern Colorado grasslands naturally evolved into developing a solution to the universal problem of raptor persecution. He established a rehabilitation facility and tirelessly lectured to service clubs and school groups about the benefits of raptors. He was a strong supporter of the RRF and a number of students accompanied him to each of the annual meetings. His enthusiasm, sincerity, and humor sparked an interest in raptors among many of his students and associates. While participating in the 1980 North American Peregrine Falcon Survey, Bill and a partner were canoeing on the Churchill River in northern Manitoba. They unexpectedly encountered extremely turbulent water and capsized. Bill disappeared and presumably drowned. In that instant, raptors and those inspired by them lost one of their strongest allies.

Eugene J. Andolsek Memorial Scholarship

Eugene Andolsek was a gifted artist who used the medium of drawing to convey his struggles and insecurities, spending hours at the kitchen table with a compass, ruler, inks and graph paper creating intricate and complex pieces of art. Unable to pursue his education at a higher level due to family circumstances, Eugene felt he was denied the opportunity to reach his potential and be valued in life. Eugene was a quiet, frugal man who spent many years of his life creating pieces of art which on the surface communicate order and uniformity, whilst giving you a glimpse of the many complexities that must have existed in Eugene’s thoughts. Art was quite simply his escape. In 2005, when Eugene was 84 years of age, his work was featured in the exhibition ‘Obsessive Art’ at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, his work garnered much critical acclaim and proved to Eugene that despite being an untrained artist he was remarkably gifted and much sought after.

The Eugene J. Andolsek Memorial Scholarship is a lasting tribute to a man who valued education above most other things. From the proceeds of Eugene’s vast portfolio this memorial scholarship will enable a young student to continue their education in a way he was never able to. This scholarship has significant value and is renewable for up to 4 years of post secondary education.

Award Type: Multi-year (up to 4 years). Recipients must maintain 3.0 GPA.

The Eugenio R. Ricci and Rose DeNapoli Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for individuals seeking to complete their education or begin their educational journey with extended study. This scholarship is established in loving memory of Eugenio and Rose, both of whom valued training and education and saw education as a necessity, not an expense.

Award Type: Single Year. Previous recipients are encouraged to re-apply in consecutive years.

Charles Barton Weaver Trust Scholarship Fund

Charles Weaver was a Realtor and a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. Mr. Weaver directed that this fund be used to provide scholarships for students who held full- or part-time jobs and graduated from Columbus City Schools.

The Carol Strip Whitney Scholarship represents a life of passion, as she has taught gifted children for 45 years. It is her belief that an investment in their futures can only serve to awaken the important aspects of learning for the world of tomorrow. 

Applicants to the scholarship intend to be among the leaders of the next generation.

Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund was established by the family of John E. Craig, Jr. and Larry William Craig. Both John and Larry were extremely gifted musicians. John was a noted musician in the central Ohio community, studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at the time of his death. A well-known musician and businessman, Larry excelled at playing the piano and worked with his father in Craig & Sons Wrecking Company. This scholarship fund will provide support to students who are pursuing careers in musical arts, theatre or drama.

Donald Franklin and Marilyn Good Holdren Scholarship

Marilyn Good Holdren was born in 1938 in Chillicothe, OH. She received her formal education at Huntington High School and Franklin School of Science and Arts. She served as a medical transcriptionist at Chillicothe Hospital for eight years, and spent the remainder of her life dedicated wo her work and friends at Battelle Memorial Institute. In 1963, she met the love of her life, Donald Franklin Holdren, and in 1975, they were married.

The scholarship was founded to support students from Muskingum County, Ohio who plan to pursue an education in engineering, pre-medicine, agriculture, or veterinary science.

Mary Siberell Rader Scholarship

This scholarship was established to provide awards to deserving students from Ross County, Ohio, or surrounding counties, who are pursuing post-secondary academic or vocational training to allow themselves to become self-sustaining.

Graduating high school seniors planning to study construction-related fields can receive up to US $12,000 for college, trade school, or apprenticeship programs through the CBC Charities Scholarship. With a mission to strengthen communities, The Columbus Foundation supports higher and vocational education; Tishomingo County, Mississippi students meeting the GPA and location criteria may be eligible.

Undergraduate nursing students in accredited RN programs, including those from Tishomingo County, Mississippi, can receive more than US $500 to support their education through the OSUNO Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship. The Columbus Foundation funds students in U.S. institutions who maintain a 3.0 GPA and are active in student nursing or campus organizations.

Students pursuing accredited four-year college degrees can access funding through this scholarship, which offers up to US $20,000 for study at well-established nonprofit U.S. colleges or universities. Administered by The Columbus Foundation, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with at least a 3.25 GPA; preference favors greater Boston–area residents.

Graduating high school seniors who are dependent children of long-term R+L Carriers employees can receive US $5,000 toward full-time study at a two- or four-year U.S. college or university. Grants from The Columbus Foundation help Tishomingo County, Mississippi students with higher education costs when their parents meet the employment and GPA criteria.

Students pursuing higher education who live in or attend school in select central Ohio counties can receive need-based support for U.S. post-secondary study through the Betsy Rueb Scholarship. Focused on expanding college access, The Columbus Foundation invites promising students who meet these residency or enrollment criteria to apply; Tishomingo County nonprofits may share this with eligible youth.

Graduating or past Dublin City Schools high school students planning to major in education and attend a U.S. institution can receive up to US $10,000 through the Ann E. Myers Scholarship. The Columbus Foundation provides this multi-year award, which may benefit students from areas like Tishomingo County, Mississippi who meet these criteria.

Special educators seeking additional special education licensing or a master’s degree who teach in eligible Northeast Indiana public schools can receive up to US $2,500 annually for tuition and related costs. WindSwell Foundation supports teacher development and special needs education; educators in Tishomingo County, Mississippi may look to similar opportunities that fit their location.

Nonprofit research institutions and similar organizations working on agricultural crops and food systems innovation may be eligible for funding to improve plant-based and fermentation-derived protein ingredients in Tishomingo County, Mississippi and beyond. Focused on flavor and functionality research, the Good Food Institute and Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research offer US $400,000 - US $500,000 for projects advancing ingredient optimization and consumer acceptance.

Undergraduate and graduate students connected to the U.S. Department of Energy or National Contract Management Association can receive up to US $1,000 for higher education costs through this scholarship, including those from Tishomingo County, Mississippi. The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Carroll A. Lambton Memorial Fund offers single-year awards, with previous recipients encouraged to reapply, prioritizing contracting or procurement careers.

High school seniors pursuing post-secondary education can access funding through Pittsburgh Foundation’s Coach Dave Gray Scholarship Fund, a single-year award of US $1,000. Eligible students must attend specific Western Pennsylvania high schools, demonstrate financial need, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and plan to attend an accredited vocational, technical, 2-year, or 4-year institution.

Graduating high school seniors pursuing post-secondary education who live and attend school in Allegheny County, PA can receive single-year scholarship support for college, university, or vocational and technical programs. Pittsburgh Foundation supports higher and vocational education through the Comptaro, Elden, Lewis Combined Scholarship Funds, which may interest Tishomingo County organizations advising eligible students relocating to that area.

Focused on wildlife and environmental studies, this scholarship invites Pennsylvania high school seniors and undergraduates to pursue degrees in biology, ecology, conservation, or related fields. Students from Tishomingo County, Mississippi who are Pennsylvania residents and meet the academic and licensing criteria may be eligible for this $1,000 award.

Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley is a collection of individual funds and resources given by local citizens to enhance and support the quality of life in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

We are a tax-exempt public charity that allows individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations to establish permanent endowments and temporary funds within the confines of one large foundation.

Foundation funds are used to provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to area students. The Foundation also hosts a Youth Engagement in Philanthropy (YEP) program, which helps high school students learn more about philanthropy and empowers them to make a difference in the community.

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley serves the City of Aurora, Kane County, and Kendall County within the State of Illinois.

W. Charlie Hooper & Shirley Linder Hooper Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund was created upon receipt of a bequest from the estates of W. Charlie and Shirley Hooper.

W. Charlie Hooper (1909-1995) was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He was an accountant with Podolak, Hooper and Kerr in Aurora.

Mr. Hooper also was a charter member of the Aurora Optimist Club and a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge of Aurora and New England Congregational Church.

Shirley Hooper (1911-2003) was born in Grand Junction, Colorado. She also was a member of New England Congregational Church. During the last years of the couple’s life, they resided in Venice, Florida.

Scholarships from this fund are available to residents of the Foundation’s service area.

The monetary value of each scholarship award varies depending upon the amount available in each individual scholarship fund. The most common scholarship award amount is $1,000 for a single year. Scholarships are designated as non-renewable one-year awards or renewable multi-year awards depending upon the scholarship fund criteria, as established by the donor of the scholarship fund.
