Casting your Future – UAW Local 668 Scholarship

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America and is committed to improving the lives of working men and women around the globe. Here in Saginaw, Amalgamated UAW Local 668 proudly represents the hourly employees at the General Motors Saginaw Metal Casting Operations plant and the Knight Facilities Maintenance Group at the same facility.

Our commitment is unwavering to the education of the youth of this country. The success of our middle class is directly dependent on education which provides the skills required to compete in a global economy.

Background

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) Program is one of the grant programs that constitute DHS/FEMA’s focus on all-hazards emergency preparedness, including the evolving threats and risks associated with natural disasters. EMPG Program funding is awarded to the 56 states and territories using a population-based allocation methodology.

The main purpose of the program is to support the emergency management needs of state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, primarily through investments in planning, training, and exercise activities and to help cover the salaries of emergency management personnel.

The NCI Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award supports new clinicians committed to research in community oncology and cancer prevention. This funding aims to facilitate their transition to independent research careers and advanced funding mechanisms. Scholars can lead independent community-based clinical trials, conduct ancillary studies, or gain valuable research experience, specifically targeting underserved communities. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant's organization.

This grant opportunity aims to reduce sleep health disparities through non-pharmacological interventions. It supports research that examines sleep as a modifiable factor influencing health outcomes among populations facing health disparities. The initiative highlights the importance of promoting sleep health in various communities, ensuring equitable access to resources and interventions. Deadlines for applications span from October 2024 to June 2027, allowing multiple opportunities for researchers to apply and contribute to this vital area of health research.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is launching a funding opportunity for the ancient DNA for Modern Genomics (aDMG) program. This initiative aims to create an ethical resource of ancient human DNA to enhance understanding of modern human traits and health. By leveraging both existing and new aDNA data, the program seeks innovative collaborations that integrate ancient and contemporary genomic information. Researchers with expertise in population genomics are encouraged to apply.

Vernon “Butch” Gudat Scholarship Fund

The Vernon “Butch” Gudat Scholarship Fund was established to create a living legacy in memory of Peoria Fire Captain Vernon “Butch” Gudat. College scholarships are provided to qualifying children and grandchildren of career and volunteer firefighters in Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties.

The Women's Research Mentorship Grant by the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation supports women in interventional radiology research, enhancing opportunities for medical students and residents. With a funding limit of $25,000, this grant encourages collaborative projects between faculty researchers and trainees, promoting a culture of inclusion. The Pre-Review process is recommended for applicants to receive feedback before final submission. Key deadlines include September 20, 2024, for Pre-Review applications and January 15, 2025, for final applications.

The Allied Scientist Grant, offered by the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation, supports graduate-level trainees in non-clinical disciplines crucial to interventional radiology. The Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) invites applications for the Emerging Investigator Research Grants (EIRG) program, aimed at supporting medical students and pediatric residents with a 12-week mentored research experience in pediatric dermatology. Awardees receive funding of up to $4,000 for in-person projects and $1,500 for remote projects, plus $1,000 for travel to the PeDRA Annual Conference. Each awardee receives a $1000 prize and a certificate, announced during the AAOMR Annual Session, encouraging excellence and innovation in the field.

The ASCAP Foundation Mariana & Paul Williams "Sunlight of the Spirit" Award supports organizations dedicated to addiction recovery through music. Established by the ASCAP Foundation and Paul Williams, the award recognizes efforts that improve lives affected by addiction. Eligible nominees must be 501(c)(3) organizations with a commitment to music-based recovery. The award includes a $5,000 prize to further their impactful work in the community, fostering healing through the therapeutic power of music.

The NIH's TALK initiative aims to enhance clinical practices for late talking children by funding research to identify early signs of language delays. This NOFO focuses on developing evidence-based strategies for screening and supporting children and their families. It targets children over 18 months who are not meeting language milestones, particularly those at higher risk due to various factors. Collaborative research efforts are encouraged to ensure effective identification and intervention.

The Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) supports small-scale research grants at institutions with limited NIH funding, enhancing undergraduate biomedical research experiences. Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million in NIH support over the past seven years. This funding opportunity encourages institutions to foster research environments that benefit undergraduate students while addressing significant NIH research interests through minimal risk clinical trials.

The GRAMMY Museum Grants Program supports scientific research projects focused on the impact of music on the human condition. With a maximum award of $20,000, it funds initiatives that explore music's effects on mood, cognition, and healing, as well as its role in the well-being of music professionals. Grants aim to advance the preservation of music heritage and foster innovative research methodologies, prioritizing projects with broad public accessibility.

U.S. Civil Society Microgrants

We seek to support projects that engage Pulitzer Center journalism to amplify the voices of affected communities, foster public debate, and drive meaningful audience engagement with our focus areas.

Audience engagement has been at the core of the Pulitzer Center’s work since its founding in 2006. In addition to grants and fellowships that facilitate breakthrough journalism, we support initiatives that connect the reporting to the audiences that need it the most. Our goal is pursuing real-world impact: engaging and mobilizing communities, increasing understanding and connection, and influencing decisions locally and globally. 

This microgrant aims to support civil society organizations and groups in the United States to utilize Pulitzer Center-supported reporting as part of projects that contribute to a more informed and empowered community.

 For this grant cycle, we are seeking grant proposals for civic engagement projects to be completed by early December 2026 that focus on one of the following issues:

• Climate and the environment, with a focus on U.S fisheries and fishing communities or climate and labor
• Information and Artificial Intelligence
• Global health, with specific focus on mental well-being or connections to the Global South

The objective is to use Pulitzer Center-supported journalism as the inspiration for the projects supported by this civil society microgrant. By leveraging this reporting, we expect to build projects that amplify the voices of affected communities, foster public debate, and drive meaningful audience engagement that will lead to impactful conversations in communities in the U.S. and beyond.

Grants range from US$2,000 to US$4,000. Project proposals can support existing activities or support the launch of new activities. 

The American Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF) offers a prestigious International Post-doc Research Fellowship Program aimed at supporting innovative research in cancer biology and treatment. Open to Italian citizens with advanced degrees obtained within the last three years, the program encourages applications for both basic and clinical research. Typically, applications are accepted from January to February, with fellowships granted for one year, potentially extendable for a second year.

The Bladder Cancer Research Innovation Award, funded by the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network Inc, promotes innovative, high-risk projects aimed at advancing bladder cancer research. Eligible applicants must be within six years of their professional degree and have mentorship from an approved institution. The award promotes transformative research aimed at improving patient experiences and outcomes in clinical settings.

The Bladder Cancer Young Investigator Awards, funded by the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, provide $50,000 to early career researchers in various scientific fields. These awards aim to foster innovation and collaboration in bladder cancer research, ultimately improving outcomes for patients. Eligible applicants include those within six years of completing their degrees and who do not hold the title of Associate Professor or higher. This initiative underscores BCAN's commitment to advancing bladder cancer research and supporting promising investigators.

The ASH Quality Improvement Training Institute (QITI) is a 16-month hybrid training program designed for North American hematology care teams. It aims to empower clinicians as leaders in quality improvement, enhancing patient outcomes and experiences. Participants engage in in-person and virtual workshops, collaborating with faculty to develop clinical quality improvement projects. Key curriculum highlights include multi-disciplinary team strategies, quality improvement assessment tools, and skills for presenting QI work effectively.

The ASH Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF) supports junior researchers in hematology and hematology-related fields. It offers $70,000 for one year, ensuring dedicated research time. Eligible MD and MD-PhD fellows can apply for a second year, aiding their competitiveness for further awards. The program emphasizes research in hematologic conditions and requires documented mentorship support. Awardees also receive $1,000 for ASH annual meeting attendance, fostering networking and professional development.

The ACI Foundation Future Concrete Industry Leader Fellowship provides $10,000 to undergraduate students demonstrating leadership potential in the concrete industry. Recipients are recognized in Concrete International magazine and matched with industry mentors. The fellowship emphasizes self-motivation, integrity, and collaboration, with no internship requirement. Students must attend a U.S., Canadian, or Mexican institution and submit a report detailing the fellowship's impact on their career preparation. The Readiness and Recreation Initiative (RARI) by the National Park Service aims to enhance outdoor recreation and support compatible land uses near military installations. The ACI Foundation Concrete Practitioner Fellowship supports undergraduate students pursuing careers in construction or design. The fellowship emphasizes innovation and problem-solving skills, preparing students for future careers. International students attending institutions in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico are eligible. The program aims to bolster the concrete industry's future by equipping aspiring professionals with essential skills and experiences.

The Ronald G. Burg Leadership Fellowship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports graduate and undergraduate students in concrete-related programs. Established in honor of Ron G. Burg's contributions to the concrete industry, it provides a $10,000 educational stipend, recognition in Concrete International magazine, travel expenses for two ACI conventions, and mentorship. International students attending institutions in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico are eligible, with a focus on developing future leaders in the concrete field.
