Bridging the Gap Scholarship 

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Trey Powell and Bridget Horn, who were both Veterans that lost their battle with PTSD to suicide. The Stronger Together Foundation strives to bring awareness to the large number of Veterans who face crises and ultimately commit suicide, as well as provide support to the families left behind.

The Bedford Community Health Foundation offers a variety of scholarships for individuals pursuing certification, degrees, and advanced degrees in health-related fields. Students can be full-time nursing students, employed nurses seeking additional education, full-time allied health students, employed health providers wanting to specialize and high school students enrolled in the Governor’s Health Academy at Susie G. Gibson Science & Technology Center.

Allied Health and Graduate Studies Scholarship 

Allied Health/Graduate Scholarship is designed to assist those who seek to enter into or advance in a health-related field. This scholarship is for full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree and for those pursuing a graduate degree in a health-related field. Examples of professionals and degree programs include dietitians, speechlanguage pathologists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, audiologists, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, diagnostic medical sonographers, dental hygienists, certified nurse’s assistant, nurse practitioner and licensed practical nurse to name a few.

Biochemical and Molecular Characterization of Marstacimab and TFPI Pathways 

This competitive grant encompasses research aimed at elucidating molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying marstacimab-TFPI interactions, including but not limited to differential expression of tissue factor and TFPI in various tissues, binding kinetics, and other biochemical properties. Projects should seek to advance foundational understanding of these interactions through innovative approaches in biochemistry, molecular biology, and related disciplines.

Project Types and Area of Interest

Projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on basic science and fundamental biological understanding of Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor (TFPI), anti-TFPI Monoclonal Antibodies, and marstacimab. The areas of interest may include (but are not limited to):

• Basic biology of TFPI including interactions among key regulatory proteins in the intrinsic and/or extrinsic clotting cascades (e.g. Protein S being a co-factor for both Protein C and TFPI).
• Impact of differential TFPI expression within tissues and the role of various TFPI pools/isoforms in the regulation of coagulation.
• Pharmacology resulting from concomitant therapies added to anti-TFPI

Pre-clinical Investigation of anti-TFPI-mediated Rebalancing Mechanisms in Non-Hemophilic Bleeding Disorders

There remains a scientific gap in understanding of the role of anti-TFPImediated hemostatic rebalancing in the context of inherited or non-hemophilic bleeding disorders. This competitive grant program encourages competitive submissions focsed on generating preclinical/foundational data exploring the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of TFPI modulation in bleeding disorders other than hemophilia.

Project Types and Area of Interest

Potential applicants are encouraged to identify and address preclinical/basic science data generation for TFPI modulation/rebalancing in their local setting. This may include:

• Rare bleeding disorders which arise from deficiencies in different clotting factors or pathway components but converge on a common functional endpoint which is an impaired thrombin generation (e.g., Factor II, Factor V, Factor VII, Factor X and Factor XI deficiencies, as well as von Willebrand disease).
• Other diseases such as Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT) that have a distinct pathophysiological mechanism.
• Other rare bleeding disorders whose mechanisms are not well understood (e.g., Bleeding Disorder of Unknown Cause, BDUC).

About the Scholarship Award:

• Multiple scholarships awarded for the 2026-27 academic year. Award amount varies by college/degree type:
  • 4-year college and trade schools: $5,500
  • 2-year college: $3,000
• Reapply guidelines:
  • Students in a four-year degree program may reapply up to 3 years after initial award (maximum 4 years of funding)
  • Students in a two-year degree or certificate program may reapply up to one year after initial award (maximum 2 years of funding)

What can this scholarship be used for?

• The scholarship will be mailed directly to the student's college to be used towards tuition, required academic fees, and/or book expenses.
• Scholarship funding cannot be distributed directly to the student. Funding cannot be used for room and board, rent, meal plans, parking passes, or other similar living expenses.
• Scholarships cannot be used for a summer semester or for graduate degrees.

Agog Open Call: Climate Futures + Immersive Media

This open call supports immersive media projects that help people better understand and respond to climate challenges and imagine what a better world could be.

We are looking for projects that use immersive technologies—including smart glasses, augmented reality, spatial sound, and mixed reality—to create more engaging, experiential forms of climate storytelling and civic participation.

The open call will support projects across a range of stages and formats, from early ideas to more developed work. What matters most is a compelling story or experience, a clear sense of purpose, and a thoughtful approach to bringing the work to life.

Grants may be awarded in denominations ranging from $25,000 to $200,000. In addition to funding, selected projects may receive mentorship, advisor support, and opportunities for partnership and distribution.

The AHRF Birtman Grant provides up to $75,000 for one year of research focused on hearing and balance disorders related to the inner ear. This grant encourages both basic and clinical studies, covering direct costs such as staff salaries and research equipment. Applicants must hold relevant advanced degrees and be affiliated with a U.S. university or hospital. An alternative budget option of $50,000 is available, enhancing eligibility for Regular grants if not awarded the Birtman Grant.

The Board of Visitors Grant: Category D provides funding up to $5,000 for 501(c)3 organizations that address healthcare needs for women, children, and the elderly in Phoenix. Eligible projects include seed money for specific initiatives, general operating support, and capital campaigns. Organizations can submit one request per year, must demonstrate community need, and provide healthcare services to underserved populations. The Leukemia Exploration and Prevention Grant Program (LEAP) aims to advance cancer interception and prevention for patients with RUNX1 familial platelet disorder (RUNX1-FPD). This program supports interdisciplinary research teams investigating the mechanisms of leukemogenesis and innovative treatment strategies. With funding of up to $430,000 per year, LEAP encourages projects focused on both understanding clonal evolution and developing novel therapeutic approaches. Open to nominations from all ranks, this award includes a plaque, a $500 cash prize, and a $750 travel allowance for the awards ceremony. The Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) Grants program by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation aims to enhance patient safety in anesthesia care through innovative research. The APSF/FAER Mentored Research Training Grant aims to enhance anesthesia patient safety by funding promising anesthesiologists who are within 10 years of their first faculty appointment. This two-year grant, totaling $300,000, supports the development of independent researchers focused on perioperative safety. Recipients must allocate 60% of their time to research and career development. With this initiative, the APSF and FAER seek to cultivate the next generation of safety scientists in anesthesia.

The AEESP Outstanding Publication Award honors landmark papers in environmental engineering and science that have significantly influenced the field. Community foundations began nationally in 1914 and are publicly-supported, 501(c)(3) philanthropic organizations that hold, administer, invest and make grants from both endowed and non-endowed funds established by individuals, families and others. They were designed to be simple, flexible, convenient, tax-wise, cost-effective and perpetual charitable vehicles.  

Our Community Foundation was established in Roanoke in 1988. With our growth, we expanded into the Martinsville/Henry County area in 2005. Today, we administer many hundreds of named endowment funds ranging in size from a minimum of $10,000 to millions of dollars. To date, donors have also committed very significant resources to the Foundation through future estate gifts.

Ashby C. and John T. Pinkard Scholarship Fund
