Scholarships

Grand Haven Area Community Foundation scholarships are awarded competitively based on criteria set by donors. These criteria could include financial need, the school the applicant is attending, academic achievement, as well as personal or career goals. The Community Foundation has a rigorous internal selection process for each scholarship decision, and each applicant is reviewed in depth, and considered thoroughly.

Zenko Family Fund 

This fund was established in 1990 by Margaret L. Zenko as a means to assist individuals to help themselves become productive members of our community. Her husband, Edward, was a graduate of Pigeon Creek School and a self-educated engineer who started Progressive Engineering, which made parts for airplanes during World War II. They both had a keen interest in the Grand Haven Lighthouse and Pier and in retirement, Edward's energy was funneled into getting the lights installed on the catwalk. The Zenko Family Fund continues to give scholarships to deserving local students who show through their work ethic that education is important.

This solicitation will support multidisciplinary groups of scientists to determine the 3-dimensional structures of molecules and molecular complexes involved in priority infectious diseases. The effort focuses on exploring biomolecular complexes that can be targeted to make new medicines and tests to prevent or treat infections and improve human health. The centers will drive cutting-edge research and development of structural biology technologies, including high-resolution 3D structural analyses, computational molecular dynamics, functional and mechanistic characterization at the molecular and cellular level, visualization at the atomic level of molecular complexes in cells and tissues, and advanced structure-guided design of molecules to combat infectious diseases. The centers will maximize use of common resources, establish broad collaborations, and mentor future structural biology researchers. Their commitment to the region remains strong, as both of their sons became educators in Washington, with one son teaching in Okanogan where his father, Don, graduated in 1933.

This award supports graduating seniors of Okanogan High School planning to attend a trade school or college in the U.S. The scholarship seeks applicants who reflect the family's commitment to activity and service. This scholarship is given in honor of the Alford Family and provides scholarship support to one male and one female varsity golfer who will continue to play at the NCAA Division II or III level.
