Stanley’s Dream

Mission Statement

Stanley’s family created Stanley’s Dream to continue their son’s legacy, making his unfulfilled dream to attend college a reality for other students.

Stanley Edwards had a dream: his dream was to attend college. Unlike many 12-year olds, achieving his dream was complicated by the battle he was fighting against brain cancer. A gifted student and promising athlete, Stanley was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 12. Despite unthinkable obstacles, Stanley persevered toward his dream. Stanley unfortunately passed away in 2002. In a tribute to this courageous young man, his family created Stanley’s Dream to continue his legacy. The number of recipients will vary each year.

The Japan Foundation's Institutional Project Support - Small Grant Program provides up to $25,000 for U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations to enhance Japanese Studies infrastructure. The program targets institutions facing challenges in maintaining their programs, particularly smaller or newer entities without established Japanese Studies initiatives. The Institutional Project Support (IPS) Grant Program by the Japan Foundation aims to enhance Japanese studies in the U.S. by providing up to $150,000 annually for three years. Eligible U.S. institutions must match the grant and focus on innovative proposals that stimulate growth in Japanese studies. The program prioritizes projects that create tenured positions and address national needs, while excluding political or commercial activities. Grants cover faculty salaries, travel, and teaching materials.

The Advancing Research Careers (ARC) Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award (F99/K00) supports late-stage graduate students from diverse backgrounds in transitioning to postdoctoral positions. This phased award aims to facilitate doctoral dissertation completion and subsequent career development in biomedical research. Participants will engage in mentoring, networking, and professional development activities, preparing them for impactful careers that often require postdoctoral training. Key deadlines for applications span from February 2025 to January 2028.

The Combating Social Isolation of Older Adults Grant, provided by the Sephardic Home for the Aged Foundation, aims to combat elder abuse and neglect exacerbated by social isolation. This initiative recognizes that isolation can lead to severe mental and physical health issues among older adults. It promotes trauma-informed care and mental health services to help these individuals reconnect socially. Additionally, the Foundation supports intergenerational programming as a vital strategy to foster community connections and reduce isolation among seniors.

Community Foundation of Henderson County was incorporated in 1982 by a group of fourteen dedicated and compassionate local leaders with the immediate need to manage two funds - the William C. Armstrong Scholarship Fund and the Charlie Renfrow Scholarship Fund, in addition to providing a permanent vehicle for citizens to give back to their community.

Chat Jones Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is for a resident of Henderson County seeking further education in an accredited degree-granting college or university. The recipient must demonstrate financial challenges to attend an institution of higher learning. The applicant should show promise and be meeting passing grade requirements but may not be in the top of his or her class rank. Consideration will be given to an applicant with special needs connections (either personally or working with).

Charlie Renfrow Trust Scholarship

Applicant must be a graduate of a high school located in Henderson County. Applicant must demonstrate financial need in pursuing a post-high school educational or training program at a trade school, technical college, community college, university, graduate school or other recognized educational institution. It is the guiding principle of this scholarship that applicants demonstrate and practice good sportsmanship.

The scholarship is renewable.

Dan Barber/Western Auto Scholarship

Each Henderson County Public High School may nominate one male and one female graduating senior. The nominee must have played in three varsity sports for two or more years during grades 9-12 (one of those years being their senior year). The nominee must have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Financial need is not a requirement.

The Cushing's Disease or Cushing's Syndrome Fund, operated by the HealthWell Foundation, provides vital financial assistance to underinsured patients facing high medical costs associated with these conditions. The fund covers co-payments, insurance premiums, and necessary treatments, ensuring that patients receive the care they need without financial burden. With an average grant utilization of $3,000 over twelve months, this fund aims to alleviate the challenges of treatment accessibility, supporting both physical and mental health for those affected.

The Lowell Teachers Scholarships, offered by Harvard University, allow middle and high school teachers to enroll in one Extension School course per term at half the tuition cost. This initiative promotes professional development by making Harvard's rigorous academic programs accessible to educators. Limited scholarships are available, encouraging early application. Note that these scholarships cannot be used for summer courses or combined with other financial aid, ensuring focused support for teachers dedicated to enhancing their skills.

The Community Foundation of Marquette County distributes over $130,000 annually in scholarships to benefit aspiring students in Marquette County.

Father Vincent L. Ouellette Scholarship Endowment Fund

Provides financial assistance for graduating high school students who are members of the St. Joseph’s Parish and will be pursuing a degree at a four year college or university. 

Distribution Process

• CFMC scholarship recipients will be contacted in June requesting student enrollment verification
• Scholarships can only be distributed once student’s information is received
• Scholarships will be distributed to the college/school/university indicated by student
• The scholarship must be used for tuition and fees required for the enrollment or attendance of the student at a qualifying educational institution; fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction at such an educational institution; and room and board, within the first semester of first year of students enrollment
• That year’s recipient must claim the scholarship within that fiscal year to be distributed (by 12/31/xx)

Eligible applicants must demonstrate ongoing involvement in the sport during their senior year. This scholarship reflects the foundation's commitment to enhancing community quality of life through education and sports engagement.

The Community Foundation of Marquette County distributes over $130,000 annually in scholarships to benefit aspiring students in Marquette County.

Bernadette Reider Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarships to students from Marquette County who are entering into a college educational program in the field of nursing. Applicants will also be judged by financial need.

The Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Scholarship at Harvard Kennedy School is designed for alumni of the PPIA Junior Summer Institute. This scholarship aims to support both U.S. and international students by considering merit and financial need. Harvard Kennedy School is committed to fostering leadership and public policy expertise, making a significant impact on global societal issues. Recipients must have participated in the PPIA program to be eligible for this limited funding.

The C.V.M. Scholarship Fund, established by Communities Foundation of Texas, offers up to $10,000 to graduates of Mildred Independent School District pursuing further education. Since 1953, CFT has collaborated with donors and nonprofits to uplift communities. Eligible candidates must have a GPA of 4.0 (out of 7.0) and meet SAT or ACT score requirements. The USA Swimming Foundation's Youth Learn-to-Swim Grant aims to increase access to swim lessons for children across the nation. By providing funding to swim lesson programs, the foundation ensures that financial barriers do not prevent children from learning this vital life skill. The Dr. Anson L. Clark Scholarship, established by Communities Foundation of Texas, provides financial support of up to $20,000 for graduating seniors from Dallas Independent School District. Eligible applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2 and achieve either a SAT score of 1190 or an ACT score of 24.
