Dennis Friends Foundation

Our Foundation was set up by Dennis to encourage and promote mutually beneficial relationships between people and dogs. His greatest wish was to do what he could to make sure that all dogs are given a chance to live happy lives. To him, that meant, if at all possible, that they live in a home where they are loved, where they can play, where there is no lack of food or care. He hoped for situations where people and pets provide fulfillment of each others needs whether they are emotional, physical or both. His greatest joy was owning dogs and he abhorred animal neglect. We call the foundation the Dennis Friends Foundation in honor of the friendship we had with Dennis, and the friendships with our dogs.

The founder's devotion to his dogs, and his strong belief in the importance of a proper animal-to-human match, resulted in the generous bequest that forms the corpus of our grant resources. It is to be used, per Dennis’ instructions, for the care and welfare of dogs, cats and horses. 

Dennis Friends Foundation Grant

The mission of the Dennis Friends Foundation is to fund initiatives that promote, support, and provide for the effective, loving, compassionate well-being of dogs, cats and horses. DFF limits grants geographically, and programs must serve New Mexico, Colorado or the District of Columbia.

DFF funds programs that promote a focused goal of keeping animals at home with their loving families. Applications should include program metrics used by the organization to measure success. Programs and/or projects should fit into one of the following four categories:

• Spay and Neuter
• Services for Emergency Veterinary, Food, and Care Services
• Programs that Support Humane Animal and Human Bonds
• Animal Services Organizational Planning and Capacity Building

The Stray Dog Institute Grants aim to transform food systems by providing funding and support to nonprofits focused on animal welfare, environmental advocacy, and food justice. With grant amounts typically ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, the Institute prioritizes pragmatic solutions that foster dignity, justice, and sustainability. The AKC Rescue Grant, offered by the AKC Humane Fund, provides essential financial support to nonprofit organizations focused on canine rescue and welfare. The Petco Love Canine Cancer Fund Grant supports active and retired working canines diagnosed with cancer. With a maximum award of $10,000, this program focuses on enhancing the mental and physical well-being of companion animals through various activities, including enrichment and training. Eligible organizations must be registered nonprofits dedicated to animal welfare, adopting out at least 500 pets annually. Applications are accepted twice a year, with deadlines approaching soon.

The Morris Animal Foundation is dedicated to improving the health of animals through scientific research and funding. With a focus on domesticated cats, the Feline Health First Award supports innovative research that addresses the welfare of both community and pet cats. Grants are available for projects lasting up to 24 months, with a maximum budget of $120,000. This initiative encourages collaborations that translate research findings into practical applications for veterinarians and cat caretakers.

The Morris Animal Foundation offers the Annual Feline Health Pilot Study Award to support innovative research that enhances the health and welfare of domesticated cats. This grant encourages collaboration between academia and industry and has a maximum project duration of 36 months, with average awards around $100,000. Eligible proposals should focus solely on domesticated cats, excluding other feline species.

Veterinary schools and research institutions working on domestic cat health can apply for fellowship training support, including applicants from the District of Columbia. Grants from Morris Animal Foundation help animal welfare and pet health organizations fund hypothesis-driven feline research projects, providing up to US $145,000 over 24 months to launch new investigators’ careers.

Veterinary researchers focusing on equine health who are graduates of AVMA-accredited veterinary schools and nearing completion of a residency or doctoral program can receive support for their work, including those based in the District of Columbia. Equus Foundation and The Foundation for the Horse provide a US $5,500 fellowship for equine research and related travel.

No-kill pet adoption groups that are Petfinder members, including dog rescues in District of Columbia, can apply for Petfinder Foundation’s Wag Wine Operation grants, awarding US $250 - US $1,000 for daily operations. Grants up to US $200,000 support work on factory farming, alternative proteins, and large-scale welfare improvements; individuals and institutions worldwide may also be eligible.

Animal welfare and veterinary-focused 501(c)(3) organizations and exempt governmental units in the District of Columbia can seek funding to support muscular dystrophy research or treatment, veterinary scholarships, and small animal shelters. The Downing Nix Trust provides U.S. grants of US $6,000 - US $12,000, with preferences for Atlanta hospitals and accredited veterinary schools offering scholarships.

Focused on animal welfare, the Tipgoomoogus Memorial Trust invites 501(c)(3) organizations to apply for US $5,000 - US $10,000 to support the care and comfort of small household pets. Dog rescues in District of Columbia may be eligible, with a preference for shelters and pounds, especially those based in New Jersey.

Dog rescues and other animal welfare organizations in District of Columbia providing free vaccine services may be eligible for this campaign grant supporting veterinary care for pets. Grants from Petco Love help U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits, government agencies, and select for-profit animal welfare entities expand access to no-cost vaccinations in underserved communities.

U.S. nonprofit or municipal animal shelters and rescues with at least 100 dog and cat intakes, including those in District of Columbia, can apply for ASPCA’s The Rescue Effect Campaign Grants; awards US $10,000 for adoption and operations support. Participants must host at least two fee-waived adoption days per month during August, September, and October.

District of Columbia animal welfare nonprofits and government agencies providing veterinary care to owned pets can seek funding for affordable, accessible services through the Community Care Grant. Focused on preventive veterinary care, Banfield Foundation invites organizations offering on-site, mobile, or pop-up clinics to apply for support, which may benefit local dog rescues.

Academic research institutions conducting veterinary and animal health research in the District of Columbia can apply for FDA’s Animal and Veterinary Innovation Centers program, with awards up to US $7,500,000 to support long-term research partnerships. Projects may address animal welfare, zoonotic disease, or other veterinary needs that could benefit dog rescue and care programs.

U.S. veterinary schools with ACT-approved theriogenology residency programs can secure up to US $150,000 to support a canine-focused resident in reproductive health and clinical genetics. Grants from American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation help strengthen training that ultimately benefits purebred and purpose-bred dogs, which may support the goals of District of Columbia dog rescues and welfare groups.

U.S. veterinary residency programs in sports medicine and rehabilitation can apply for up to US $300,000 to train a canine-focused resident, including research and clinical work. Programs in the District of Columbia working with canine athletes, working dogs, or dogs needing rehabilitation may be eligible, which can ultimately benefit local dog welfare and rescue efforts.

The ASPCA is offering up to $14 million in Spay/Neuter Grants for shelters and clinics across the U.S. to enhance spay/neuter services for vulnerable animals. Proposals can address critical infrastructure needs and major capital projects to increase spay/neuter capacity. Only one application per organization is permitted, and applicants must choose one funding category. The focus is on compelling proposals that meet the most urgent needs.

Adoption Growth Grants 

Purpose

Adoption Growth grants drive lifesaving outcomes by supporting successful, sustainable in-store adoption programs, events, and results in partnership with PetSmart stores.

Funding Support

Funding may be used for costs associated with building or enhancing your organization’s adoption program in partnership with PetSmart stores, including:

• Staff positions supporting in-store adoption programs and events.
• Marketing and advertising for in-store adoption programs.
• Volunteer or foster support, incentives, and recruitment related to in-store adoption events.
• Event supplies, including containment and enrichment materials.
• Shelter software and technology needs.
• Vehicle repairs or transportation to adoption events.
• Innovative in-store adoption ideas and pilot programs.
• Other costs directly associated with facilitating PetSmart adoptions and in-store events.

There are two Cohorts under this funding: Cohort 1-  Accelerating in-store adoptions; and Cohort 2: Capacity Building.

Cohort 2: Capacity Building

Applicants must have completed at least one adoption in a PetSmart store within the last 12 months.

Preference will be given to organizations seeking to build a consistent, sustainable in-store adoption program. Applications should include a clear plan, with examples, for sustaining the program over time.

Four Required Steps

Applicants must complete all four required steps below before submitting a grant application:

• Step 1 - Watch the kick-off video and complete the Adoption Accessibility Questionnaire
• Step 2 - Confirm eligibility and connect with your Adoptions Grant Manager: After completing the questionnaire, you will receive an email confirming your eligibility. Eligible partners will be invited to a call with their Adoptions Grant Manager to discuss the grant opportunity, expectations, and potential fit.
• Step 3 - Engage your PetSmart store partners: Discuss your intent to apply, align on goals, and gain their commitment to support the success of your in-store adoption program.
• Step 4-  Submit your application.
