Partners for Raptors Lifetime Achievement Award

The Partners for Raptors Lifetime Achievement Award honors outstanding individuals who have dedicated their lives to raptor research and conservation. These notable awardees are recognized for their significant contributions to the study and conservation of birds of prey, as well as their outstanding achievements gained through innovative field work, impactful collaborative partnerships, and a lifetime of inclusive interactions with their peers and the public focused on raptors. This is a joint award originally given by the Raptor Research Foundation in partnership with The Peregrine Fund. Going forward, we welcome partnerships with other raptor-oriented organizations, depending on the nominee’s involvement with both the proposing organization and RRF. The award is intended to complement RRF’s Hamerstrom (primarily academic focused) and Cade (primarily conservation focused) awards. 

This is a non-monetary award, designated with a plaque and a RRF resolution honoring the awardee.

The nomination committee consists of representatives of both RRF and the partner organization. Once a nominee is identified, the boards of both the RRF and the partner organization will ratify the nomination.

William Andersen Student Presentation Awards

The Awards: The William C. Andersen Memorial Awards are given to both the best student oral and poster presentation at the annual RRF meeting. This award can only be given to a student once per degree (bachelor, master, or doctorate). To be eligible, a student must be senior author and presenter of the paper or poster.

Students wishing to apply for this award should indicate their interest by checking the box on the abstract submission form. 

Amount

The poster award recipient receives $325, 1-year free membership to RRF, and waived page charges to publish their research in the Journal of Raptor Research. The recipient must be the primary author and the paper must reflect what the award was for.

About William Andersen

The William C. Andersen Award was established in 1982 in memory of Bill Andersen, who drowned in 1980 while canoeing the Churchill River in Manitoba during a Peregrine Falcon survey. Dr. Andersen was a chemistry professor, but his first love was raptors. He established the Ornithology Research Center at Otero Jr. College in La Junta Colorado, as a medium for raising funds for the field research he conducted with his students. His interest in raptors of southeastern Colorado grasslands naturally evolved into developing a solution to the universal problem of raptor persecution. He established a rehabilitation facility and tirelessly lectured to service clubs and school groups about the benefits of raptors. He was a strong supporter of the RRF and a number of students accompanied him to each of the annual meetings. His enthusiasm, sincerity, and humor sparked an interest in raptors among many of his students and associates. While participating in the 1980 North American Peregrine Falcon Survey, Bill and a partner were canoeing on the Churchill River in northern Manitoba. They unexpectedly encountered extremely turbulent water and capsized. Bill disappeared and presumably drowned. In that instant, raptors and those inspired by them lost one of their strongest allies.

Elaine Sirkin Forbes Scholarship Fund

The Elaine Sirkin Forbes Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for high school seniors graduating from Allegheny County Schools who wish to major in visual, performance or media art.

Excellence in Medicine Awards

The AMA Foundation’s Excellence in Medicine Awards honor physicians and medical advocates who exemplify the highest values of the profession—volunteerism, community engagement, leadership, and service to underserved populations. Each recipient is recognized at a ceremony during the AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago and receives a $2,500 grant honorarium directed to a nonprofit health organization of their choice. Since 2005, more than 100 honorees have been celebrated through this program, with over $250,000 awarded to strengthen community health and advance equitable care nationwide.

Eugene J. Andolsek Memorial Scholarship

Eugene Andolsek was a gifted artist who used the medium of drawing to convey his struggles and insecurities, spending hours at the kitchen table with a compass, ruler, inks and graph paper creating intricate and complex pieces of art. Unable to pursue his education at a higher level due to family circumstances, Eugene felt he was denied the opportunity to reach his potential and be valued in life. Eugene was a quiet, frugal man who spent many years of his life creating pieces of art which on the surface communicate order and uniformity, whilst giving you a glimpse of the many complexities that must have existed in Eugene’s thoughts. Art was quite simply his escape. In 2005, when Eugene was 84 years of age, his work was featured in the exhibition ‘Obsessive Art’ at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, his work garnered much critical acclaim and proved to Eugene that despite being an untrained artist he was remarkably gifted and much sought after.

The Eugene J. Andolsek Memorial Scholarship is a lasting tribute to a man who valued education above most other things. From the proceeds of Eugene’s vast portfolio this memorial scholarship will enable a young student to continue their education in a way he was never able to. This scholarship has significant value and is renewable for up to 4 years of post secondary education.

Award Type: Multi-year (up to 4 years). Recipients must maintain 3.0 GPA.

The Eugenio R. Ricci and Rose DeNapoli Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for individuals seeking to complete their education or begin their educational journey with extended study. This scholarship is established in loving memory of Eugenio and Rose, both of whom valued training and education and saw education as a necessity, not an expense.

Charles Barton Weaver Trust Scholarship Fund

Charles Weaver was a Realtor and a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. Mr. Weaver directed that this fund be used to provide scholarships for students who held full- or part-time jobs and graduated from Columbus City Schools.

The Carol Strip Whitney Scholarship represents a life of passion, as she has taught gifted children for 45 years. Dr. Carol believes in the abilities of gifted children to make this world a better place. These children will be our leaders, our researchers, our inventors. It is her belief that an investment in their futures can only serve to awaken the important aspects of learning for the world of tomorrow. 

Applicants to the scholarship intend to be among the leaders of the next generation.

Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund was established by the family of John E. Craig, Jr. and Larry William Craig. Both John and Larry were extremely gifted musicians. John was a noted musician in the central Ohio community, studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at the time of his death. A well-known musician and businessman, Larry excelled at playing the piano and worked with his father in Craig & Sons Wrecking Company. This scholarship fund will provide support to students who are pursuing careers in musical arts, theatre or drama.

Students pursuing medical or nursing post-secondary education who live in Ross County, Ohio, or graduated from a Ross County high school can receive scholarship support for study at U.S. institutions. The Columbus Foundation’s Donald Franklin and Marilyn Good Holdren Scholarship offers US $1,000, which may benefit Grant County, North Dakota nonprofits assisting eligible students with applications.

Grant County, North Dakota students pursuing engineering, pre-medicine, agriculture, or veterinary science can access funding through the Columbus Foundation’s Fred F. and Herman M. Dreier Scholarship, with awards up to US $40,000. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens residing in Muskingum County, Ohio and enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Graduating seniors or graduates pursuing post-secondary academic or vocational education can receive more than US $500 to support full-time study at accredited U.S. institutions. The Columbus Foundation supports higher and vocational education, and students from Ross County, Ohio or nearby areas with ties to Grant County, North Dakota may be eligible individually, not through their nonprofits.

Graduating high school seniors pursuing construction-related studies may be eligible for scholarships supporting higher, vocational, or trade education, including students from Grant County, North Dakota. Grants from The Columbus Foundation’s CBC Charities Scholarship offer up to US $12,000 for those majoring in fields like construction management, architecture, engineering, HVAC, or related areas at U.S. institutions.

Undergraduate nursing students in accredited U.S. RN programs, including those from Grant County, North Dakota, can receive more than US $500 to support their education and leadership development. With a mission to strengthen communities, The Columbus Foundation provides this scholarship for students active in campus or student nursing organizations who meet GPA and accreditation criteria.

Students pursuing four-year degrees at accredited, nonprofit U.S. colleges can access funding through The Columbus Foundation’s Scholarship Fund of The Stephen H. Barmakian Family Foundation, with awards up to US $20,000. U.S. citizens or permanent residents with at least a 3.25 GPA, including those from Grant County, North Dakota, may be eligible.

Graduating high school seniors who are dependent children of long-term R+L Carriers employees can receive US $5,000 toward full-time study at a two- or four-year U.S. college or university. Grants from The Columbus Foundation help students connected to R+L Carriers pursue higher education, which may benefit families of nonprofit staff or volunteers in Grant County, North Dakota.

Students pursuing higher education who live in, or attend school in, select central Ohio counties can receive need-based scholarship support for U.S. post-secondary study. Focused on expanding educational opportunity, The Columbus Foundation invites eligible applicants whose home or school is in Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, or Union County.

Graduating or past Dublin City Schools high school students planning to major in education can receive up to US $10,000 from the Ann E. Myers Scholarship to pursue higher education at a U.S. institution. Grants from The Columbus Foundation may benefit Grant County, North Dakota nonprofits that advise or support such students and their educational pathways.

Special educators seeking additional licensing can receive up to US $2,500 per year for accredited special education certification or a master’s degree through this scholarship, managed by the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. Teachers in eligible Northeast Indiana public schools may find this opportunity useful alongside other funding options in Grant County, North Dakota.

Research institutions and similar organizations improving plant-based and fermentation-derived protein ingredients can apply for Good Food Institute grants, with awards from US $400,000 - US $500,000. Focused on agricultural crops and protein optimization across the U.S., North Dakota projects, including those serving Grant County, may be competitive if they advance flavor and functionality research.

Undergraduate and graduate students connected to the U.S. Department of Energy or the National Contract Management Association can receive up to US $1,000 for tuition and educational expenses, including those from Grant County, North Dakota. With a mission to improve quality of life, Pittsburgh Foundation provides this single-year Carroll A. Lambton Memorial Fund scholarship, with past recipients encouraged to reapply.

Graduating high school seniors pursuing post-secondary education with financial need can receive US $1,000 for tuition and related costs through the Coach Dave Gray Scholarship Fund. The Pittsburgh Foundation provides Grant County, North Dakota students and others with single-year support for accredited vocational, technical, 2-year, or 4-year college and university programs.

Graduating high school seniors pursuing vocational training or college can receive single-year scholarship support for post-secondary education through the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Comptaro, Elden, Lewis Combined Scholarship Funds. Focused on higher and vocational education, eligible students must demonstrate financial need, hold at least a 2.0 GPA, and meet the residency and school-attendance requirements in Allegheny County, PA.

The Baron P. “Deuce” Braswell II Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund was created in memory of Baron P. “Deuce” Braswell II of Spotsylvania. Baron was the son of Baron Purnell Braswell and Gwendolyn Sue Braswell and he died tragically January 20, 2006. He was a junior and an honor student at Courtland High School. Baron was a very spiritual person and was an active member of the football, basketball, baseball and track teams, known for thanking God for his athletic abilities.

The Anne Koepfinger Inspiring Educators Memorial Award

Anne Koepfinger, a dedicated Special Education teacher, devoted over 28 years of her life to teaching and positively impacting the lives of countless students with learning disabilities. Her unwavering commitment to education and profound influence on students left an indelible mark on the community.

In remembrance of Anne’s remarkable contributions, her family recently established The Anne Koepfinger Inspiring Educators Memorial Award through The Community Foundation. This scholarship serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement, designed to inspire students to follow in Anne’s footsteps and pursue careers in the field of education.

The Koepfinger family recognized that the best way to honor Anne’s memory was to support and uplift the next generation of educators. They understood that the impact of a dedicated and passionate teacher reaches far beyond the classroom. A scholarship in Anne’s name would not only serve as a tribute to her life and work but would also empower aspiring educators to make a meaningful difference in the lives of future students.

The legacy of a beloved educator continues to inspire and touch the lives of students through this scholarship.
