Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Inc

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation is the only nonprofit charity organization dedicated to ending mesothelioma, and the suffering caused by this cancer, by:

• funding research to improve treatment options;
• providing treatment support and education for patients and their families;
• and advocating for federal funding of research.

The mission of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation spans across four distinct areas: through research, education, support, and advocacy the Foundation seeks to eradicate the vicious effects of mesothelioma. Led by the Board of Directors, our team works collaboratively to develop and administer our programs, and to fundraise to pay for those programs (the Foundation is funded by private individual and corporate contributions only — it does not receive any government funding).

Patient Travel Grant Program

A mesothelioma diagnosis and treatment often require the patient and their family to incur numerous expenses as part of their treatment. Travel to treatment, alone, can cause a significant financial burden on the patient, which might even cause the patient to not seek treatment away from home, even it’s their best option. To ensure that all patients have the ability to seek specialized help and treatments, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation administers its Travel Grant Program.

The Meso Foundation’s Patient Travel Grant Program, founded by Mary and Bob Cosentino, provides travel grants to patients and one caregiver traveling for an initial consult and/or for clinical trial treatments.

• The type of eligible travel must fall into at least one of these two categories:
  • One trip for one initial consultation with a mesothelioma specialist.
  • Multiple trips to participate in an interventional clinical trial (found on clinicaltrials.gov).

Strategic Multi-Modal Investment Funds

Recognizing the significance Multi-Modal infrastructure has on the State’s economy and its importance to the citizens for jobs and the transportation of goods and services, the Mississippi Legislature established the Strategic Multi-Modal Investments Fund (SMIF) during the 2023 Regular Session. The SMIF was established to increase the capacity for the movement of freight and increase economic activity at the airports, ports and railroads located in this state and to support long-term economic growth in the state. The legislature provided the necessary authority to initially fund the program up to $30 million.

In continuation of the program, the 2026 Legislative Session earmarked $10 million of Capital Expense funds received by MDOT. In accordance with Miss. Code Ann. § 65-1-901 and rules and regulations established by the Department, MDOT will administer the Strategic Multi-Modal Investments Fund for necessary investments and repairs to airports, ports, and railroads in the state.

In accordance with the legislation, the following goals have been established:

• Goal 1 – Fund projects that increase the capacity for freight movement in the State.
• Goal 2 – Fund projects that increase economic activity at the ports, airports and railroads within the State.
• Goal 3 – Fund projects that support long-term economic growth in the State.

Multi-Modal Transportation Improvement Program

The Multi-Modal Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP) is administered by the Mississippi Department of Transportation for the improvement of airports, ports, railroads, and transit systems in the state.

Airport, port, and rail projects must be related to capital improvements or the rehabilitation of basic infrastructure and outside of the normal operating budget. Transit projects include capital and certain other expenses that meet FTA eligibility requirements. Projects cannot be for routine maintenance or administrative or operational expenses.

Research Scholar Grants

Research Scholar Grants (RSG) provide support for independent, self-directed researchers.

Applicants' institutions must provide space and other resources customary for independent investigators.

Grant proposals are investigator-initiated and may pursue questions across the cancer research continuum, as long as they fit within an American Cancer Society (ACS) priority research area.

These grants typically contribute to the cost of salaries, consumable supplies, and other miscellaneous items required in the research. 

Research Scholar Grants are funded up to $215,000 per year (direct costs), plus 10% allowable indirect costs, with a project period up to four years.

Rural Provider Technology Grant Program

Rural Provider Technology Grant Program is part of the HTAM Initiative. The Health Technology Advancement & Modernization Initiative (HTAM) is Mississippi’s effort to modernize the technology that supports rural healthcare—so providers can deliver safer, faster, and more coordinated care.

RTG Goal

Provide funding to entities to support necessary enhancements to technology hardware and software, including but not limited to digital and smart tools, ambient listening technologies, automated systems, and resources to support onboarding to the statewide health information exchange. Eligible improvements may also include broader technology upgrades, cybersecurity and data integrity enhancements, cybersecurity awareness programs, development of security protocols or policies, training, integration and implementation costs associated with technology changes and the acquisition of related equipment needed to address identified gaps or unmet needs within a provider’s technology ecosystem. Technology investments are targeted at increasing or improving service capacity, securing and protecting data, and supporting long-term operational sustainability.

Program Objectives

All grant projects funded under this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) must align with at least one of the program objectives listed below:

• Foster the use of innovative technologies that promote efficient care delivery, enhance data security, and expand access to digital health tools for rural facilities, providers, and patients. This could include the modernization of technology, expanding digital tools, and improved interoperability.
• Improve interoperability and data connectivity by facilitating onboarding, integration, and enable participation in the statewide health information exchange to improve data sharing, care coordination, and continuity of care.
• Strengthen core technology infrastructure by enabling participating facilities to modernize and stabilize essential technology hardware and software systems to support safe, efficient, and high-quality care delivery.
• Enhance cybersecurity by funding targeted upgrades that protect patient data, ensure data integrity, mitigate operational risk, and support compliance with applicable privacy and security requirements.
• Improving financial and operational sustainability to reduce closures and keep care local. This could include optimizing revenue cycle, leveraging data analytics, alignment with current and future care delivery models, and upgrading facilities.

Broad Street Children's Foundation supports self-sustaining children's homes across the United States that actively foster the development of strong, well-rounded children in their care.

Since the start of the Foundation, over $1,000,000.00 in grants have been donated to children's homes across the country. Additionally, through the Bill and Jackie Hazelgrove Scholarship Program, we have been able to assist a number of young people to continue their education and work towards a college or vocational degree.

About

Originally conceived by Dr Bruce Mesara in 1990 as a means to carry on his philanthropic efforts beyond his lifetime, the Mesara Family Foundation was re-envisioned by his two children Amy and Douglas in 2014, and received their 501(c)(3) status from the IRS in 2015. Amy and Douglas sought out the assistance of their cousins to build upon the charitable principals on their parents, aunts and uncles.

The foundation is headquartered in Kalamazoo Michigan.
