The Alexander H. & Helen V. Smith Research Award, presented by the Mycological Society of America, supports research on macrofungi specimens collected by Alexander H. Smith. This award facilitates access to crucial collections at the University of Michigan Herbarium, aiding mycologists and students in advancing their studies. Recipients are encouraged to attend the MSA annual meeting to engage with the mycological community, enhancing collaboration and networking opportunities.

Helen M. Thew Memorial Scholarship

Dorothy Ellen Thew, a lifelong member of the Marion community, left, as part of her legacy, a gift to create three scholarship funds at Marion Community Foundation. Dorothy, a noteworthy person in her own right, designated that three scholarship funds be created from her estate to honor beloved members of her family. The Helen M. Thew Memorial Scholarship honors her sister’s love of music and dedication to education.

Well educated, Dorothy was a 1936 graduate of Marion Harding High School and attended Hunter College, and Indiana, East Carolina, and Toledo universities. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves in 1943 and had a naval career which spanned 30 years. Dorothy worked at the selective service board from 1943-1955 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Marion Depot until its closing in 1961. She retired from the Columbus Defense Supply Center in 1979.

Her civic involvements mirrored her military career. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a Plank-Owner of the Navy Lone Sailor Memorial Association and Fleet Reserve Association, as well as the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Association for Retired Persons, the American and Marion County Historical societies, Marion Senior Citizens and Central Christian Church of Marion.

The Health-Surgical Care Fund Grant, provided by the Orange County Community Foundation, aims to support underfunded, volunteer-driven organizations offering surgical care for various physical or cosmetic deformities. The Fund prioritizes programs with a significant long-term impact, ensuring services are free to the community. Eligible organizations must demonstrate accountability, transparency, and a commitment to serving U.S. citizens, while allocating at least 70% of their budget to direct program expenses.

The Grant and Bridget Daugherty Nursing Scholarship, administered by the Coral Gables Community Foundation, offers financial assistance to Coral Gables High School seniors pursuing a Nursing major. The scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 for one academic year. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit transcripts annually to retain funding. This initiative supports students committed to academic excellence and a career in healthcare.

Marion Rotary Club’s John C. Keggan Scholarship

The Marion Rotary Club John C. Keggan Scholarship was created in 2024. It honors the late John Keggan (1931-2023), philanthropist and businessman. John was the long-time owner and operator of the Marion Flower Shop and a realtor in Marion for 20 years. He was a Palace Guard, one of a group of local men who helped to save and restore the Marion Palace Theatre. He was an Air Force veteran and an avid Ohio State fan and alum.

His scholarship provides financial support for Marion County graduating seniors. Recipients will have been a resident of Marion County for at least two full years and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher based on a 4.0 scale.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who attend The Ohio State University regional campus in Marion, Ohio.

Community Foundation of Henderson County

Community Foundation of Henderson County was incorporated in 1982 by a group of fourteen dedicated and compassionate local leaders with the immediate need to manage two funds - the William C. Armstrong Scholarship Fund and the Charlie Renfrow Scholarship Fund, in addition to providing a permanent vehicle for citizens to give back to their community.

Our Mission is to help people who care make lasting contributions to causes that matter. The Community Foundation of Henderson County is a highly visible, philanthropic leader directed by an engaged and committed board, staffed by qualified employees, empowering donors at all levels to invest in professionally managed charitable funds that address community needs.

Jane and Kevin Baird Scholarship

This scholarship supports a student that demonstrates financial need, but is not eligible for a Pell grant. Candidates for this scholarship will have a weighted GPA between 3.0 and 4.0 and be attending an accredited institution, including vocational, technical, trade, college, or university schools.

Scholarships

Community Foundation of Henderson County's Scholarship Program began in 1984. Thanks to the generosity of passionate donors, over 2,000 traditional and non-traditional students have been provided more than $10 million in scholarships to pursue higher education.

Sigrun M. Mapes Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is to provide financial support to a student seeking to attain a degree in the field of Nursing at an accredited institution. Student must be accepted or enrolled into a Nursing program at an accredited community college, meet and maintain the academic standards as set by the educational institution, be a legal resident of Henderson County, and demonstrate financial need.

The NCI Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award supports new clinicians committed to research in community oncology and cancer prevention. This funding aims to facilitate their transition to independent research careers and advanced funding mechanisms. Scholars can lead independent community-based clinical trials, conduct ancillary studies, or gain valuable research experience, specifically targeting underserved communities. Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant's organization.

The Teaching the Bible Grant, offered by the Presbyterian Mission Agency, supports Presbyterian-related schools, colleges, and universities in enhancing biblical education. Grants of up to $10,000 are available for initiatives such as lecture series, Bible studies, and new curriculum development. This funding not only encourages academic engagement but also fosters community learning experiences, allowing students to explore and reflect on their faith collectively. Applications are accepted quarterly, with deadlines on the first Friday of March, June, and September.

Clarinet Scholarship & Education Program

The Clarinet Scholarship & Education Program seeks to honor Renna Clarinet Thornton’s philosophy and enthusiasm for education.

After graduating from Coppin State College with her degree in special education in 1972, Renna started her 40-year teaching journey with Baltimore City Public Schools as a science teacher and special educator.

Through the Clarinet Program, the Claude C. Thornton Foundation offers workforce development training, a $1,000 scholarship to collegiate students, as well as parent coaching 1:1s and workshops.

Mission

The Clarinet Scholarship provides awardees with unrestricted monetary and mentorship support to empower minority students through their academic journey, ultimately promoting exceptional achievement. The Clarinet Scholarship also serves to encourage awardees to continue utilizing inquiry-based strategies to gain the academics and skills needed to be victorious and productive within the community.

The Leadership Development Grants empower women in the PC(USA) to enhance their leadership skills through educational opportunities. This initiative fosters personal growth and active participation within the Presbyterian Women community, ultimately strengthening the church's mission. Eligible women can apply for grants to attend various leadership events, ensuring that they can contribute effectively to the church's goals while developing their unique gifts and talents.

Maude and Harvey Goehring Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student preparing to teach physical science or mathematics in the public secondary schools. The recipient shall be a citizen and resident of Henderson County and shall have graduated from a Henderson County high school. The recipient shall be required to need financial assistance to pursue his or her education at a post-high school institution.

This grant opportunity aims to reduce sleep health disparities through non-pharmacological interventions. It supports research that examines sleep as a modifiable factor influencing health outcomes among populations facing health disparities. The initiative highlights the importance of promoting sleep health in various communities, ensuring equitable access to resources and interventions. Deadlines for applications span from October 2024 to June 2027, allowing multiple opportunities for researchers to apply and contribute to this vital area of health research.

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

VFW Youth Scholarships- Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 28,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1.6 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. 

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. The complete list of other national scholarships range up to $21,000, with the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) winning a scholarship of at least $1,000.

VFW Department (state) first place winners also receive a trip to participate in Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership experience at Valley Forge which is an inspiring four-day program where students experience mock congressional debates, participate in a free enterprise challenge, visit historical sites and engage in interactive educational activities. This immersive experience allows students to develop their critical thinking and leadership skills while understanding their responsibilities as citizens. The trip, awarded to every VFW Department (state) winner, is made possible through the generous support of Twisted X.

Students interested in participating must submit their audio essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed entry form to their local participating VFW Post. 

The Leadership Development Grants for Young Women, offered by Presbyterian Women, empower women aged 18-30 to enhance their leadership skills through participation in educational events. With grants of up to $2,000 for the Commission on the Status of Women and $1,000 for the Ecumenical Advocacy Days, this program fosters personal and community growth within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Eligible applicants must be active in PC(USA) and meet specific grant requirements.

Thomas D. Buckley Trust

Thomas Dennis Buckley was born in December 1897 in Missouri to Dennis and Susan Buckley. His family—his parents, brothers Frank and John, sister Elizabeth, and Tom—moved to Lamar in 1906. In 1917, Tom came to Chappell, Nebraska with his brothers. The men lived in a bunkhouse on wheels and hired out to break sod using a one-cylinder Rumley tractor. After serving one year in the military, Tom worked on the railroad for several years before returning to Chappell, where he began farming. He continued farming until his death on June 12, 1979.

Upon his death, a Private Foundation—the Thomas D. Buckley Trust—was formed in accordance with his wishes. The Trustees sold his land in 1980 at record-high prices and invested the proceeds, along with the investments Tom held at the time of his death. These funds continue to support the mission of the Trust today.

Thomas D. Buckley Trust Continuing Education Scholarship

The Trust awards $20,000 of scholarships to students who are currently enrolled in college seeking Associate Degrees or Bachelor Degrees. There will be ten $2,000 scholarships awarded each year to students who will be a college Sophomore, Junior, or Senior during the next Fall Semester.

Each scholarship will be paid $1,000 in the Fall Semester and $1,000 in the Spring Semester, and cannot be carried to another year. The payments will be sent directly to the school that the recipient is attending.

The scholarship money can be used for tuition, room and board, fees and books.

The Russell Sage Foundation is launching the Causal Research on the Criminal Justice System Grant to support early-career scholars in conducting causal research related to the criminal justice system, including police, courts, and probation. This initiative aims to build a pipeline of researchers and enhance collaboration through a capstone conference. Eligible applicants must be tenure-track assistant professors in the U.S. The next deadline is expected in April 2026, with a budget limit of $100,000 for one-year projects.

The Carnegie Young Leaders for Civic Preparedness Fellowship Program invites young individuals aged 14-24 to engage in community projects, bridging divides and tackling pressing issues nationwide. In 2025, 500 changemakers will form 100 teams, enhancing their civic skills through collaboration and discussions. Participants will receive stipends and reimbursement funding, while committing to regular meetings and project work. This initiative aims to empower diverse youth populations, providing equitable access to civic education and leadership opportunities as America approaches its 250th anniversary.

The Professional & Technical Training Scholarships-Mission San Rafael Scholarship, offered by 10,000 Degrees, aims to support Marin County students with financial need pursuing vocational programs that lead to a license or certificate. Eligible applicants include Marin residents or San Rafael Unified School District graduates, attending accredited training institutions. This initiative provides not only financial aid but also essential resources to ensure students' success in their educational journeys.

Marion Rotary Club’s Robert C. Dowd Scholarship

The Marion Rotary Club was chartered in 1922, as club number 1051, with 23 charter members led by Fred Guthery, the first president. The Marion Rotary Club, along with the Marion Rotary Foundation, which was incorporated in 1959, has contributed to many organizations and scholarships over the years.

The Marion Rotary Club Robert C. Dowd Scholarship migrated to Marion Community Foundation in 2017. It honors the late Bob Dowd and provides financial support for Marion County graduating seniors. Recipients will have been a resident of Marion County for at least two full years and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher based on a 4.0 scale.

Special consideration will be given to applicants who intend to pursue an education and career in or related to finance, economics, business, music, or theater.

The Teaching Credential Scholarship, administered by 10,000 Degrees, offers two opportunities for aspiring educators. The Marin Retired Teachers Association Scholarship supports Marin County high school graduates pursuing fifth-year teaching credentials or master's degrees in education. Meanwhile, the Building Better Teachers Scholarship aids early care and education teachers in advancing their studies towards a bachelor's or master's degree. Both scholarships encourage applicants to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and are aimed at fostering the next generation of educators.

Washington County Community Foundation

The Washington County Community Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life in Washington County by promoting and facilitating philanthropy. We accomplish this by assuming four philanthropic roles of Grantmaker, Donor Service Organization, Fundraiser, and Community Leader. 

Fostering philanthropy by offering charitable gifting opportunities to donors on an individualized basis and at reasonable fees, we make charitable giving easier, more satisfying, and more effective. We broadly support the Washington County community by awarding grants in eight focus areas as follows: Animal Welfare, Arts & Humanities, Community Improvement & Economic Development, Conservation & Environment, Education, Health & Fitness, Human Needs, and Religion & Faith.

Washington County Visiting Nurses Scholarship Fund

The Foundation provides a limited number of need-based and merit-based scholarships to qualifying students attending a graduate school or other educational institution.

The Cameron Impact Scholarship, awarded by the Bryan Cameron Education Foundation, offers a full-tuition four-year scholarship to 15 exceptional high school students annually. This merit-based program seeks leaders who excel in academics, community service, and extracurricular activities. Applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.7 or higher and demonstrate a commitment to positive change. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, and books at any accredited U.S. college, with an emphasis on public service careers.

The Bertold E. Weinberg Scholarship, offered by the ACI Foundation, supports graduate students pursuing full-time studies in concrete-related fields. Established in honor of Mr. Weinberg's dedication to education, this scholarship provides a $5,000 stipend for tuition and materials, along with national recognition in Concrete International magazine. The award cycle runs from fall to spring, with funds disbursed in two installments to the recipient's educational institution.

Hardin Medical and Dental Staff Memorial Scholarship

A graduating high school senior residing in Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Meade, Nelson or Taylor Counties.

The ACI Foundation Scholarship supports both graduate and undergraduate students in concrete-related studies, offering a $5,000 educational stipend for tuition, books, and materials. Established in 1989, the ACI Foundation promotes education and innovation in the concrete industry through research and collaboration. Scholarships are awarded based on contributions from ACI members, and recipients gain recognition in Concrete International magazine, fostering the next generation of industry leaders.
