Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund
National Trust for Historic Preservation
The Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund
The Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund helps to build the capacity of existing preservation organizations and encourages collaboration among these organizations by providing grants for mentoring and other peer-to-peer and direct organizational development and learning opportunities. The purpose of these grants is to support the leadership and effectiveness of staff and board members of preservation organizations to fulfill their mission and to create a stronger, more effective preservation movement. By linking organizations with specific skills/programs to those seeking to develop similar abilities, the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund promotes individualized mentoring and the sharing of expertise. Valuable lessons can be learned from someone who has successfully navigated the same situation that an organization currently faces.
Grants from the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund support travel costs and mentor honoraria. We know that current circumstances may make travel impossible, but we still want you to have peer mentoring opportunities. We are open to innovative ideas for this program, and encourage you to reach out to the Grants office if you think you have a plan that could make this feasible and safe for you and your mentor.
What is the Process to Apply?
Only Organizational Level Forum members or Main Street America members of the National Trust are eligible to apply for funding from the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund grant program. To learn more about Forum and join today, visit our website (found here).
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis rather than in competitive rounds. Grant decisions will be made thoughtfully, but as expeditiously as possible. Once the grant funds have been expended for the current fiscal year, recommended applicants who did not receive funding will have priority for a Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund grant in the next fiscal year.
Please contact the grants office to describe the proposed application and to access to the Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund application.

Outdoor Equity Fund
Maine Initiatives
Purpose
The purpose of this Fund is to improve safe, equitable access to outdoor spaces and increased opportunities for nature-based learning in Wabanakiak, (known as Maine) for Wabanaki, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). BIPOC communities experience systemic and institutional targeting that prevent safe access to these spaces. The Fund will make grants to organizations focused on addressing and finding solutions to these issues, and will prioritize organizations led by members of the communities served.
Funding Priorities
Groups whose work advances outdoor equity as defined by the goals of the OEF and groups doing work in one or more of the following areas are welcome to apply.
- Land-based cultural continuation & preservation
- Land-back and land return projects
- Leadership development and mentoring
- Farming and gardening programs
- Outdoor accessibility development
- Outdoor expeditions, such as hunting and fishing trips
- Outdoor learning or environmental education, including school-based experiences
- Therapeutic and trauma-informed nature programs
Note: The OEF is also interested in groups whose work is advancing outdoor equity in new or important ways that may not be captured on the list above.
Goals of the Outdoor Equity Fund
- To bolster groups’ capacities to improve access to outdoor spaces and/or create nature-based learning opportunities.
- To increase ownership and decision-making power by new and emerging leaders who have experienced barriers to accessing safe outdoor spaces.
- To strengthen connection and collaboration among people, groups, funders, and others working in this realm to create synergy and uplift all.
- To address barriers that exist for communities that need and want to access outdoor spaces.
- To advance nature-based learning and strengthen relationships with the outdoors in an inclusive way.
- To educate the greater community about what groups are doing and issues regarding outdoor access and communal outdoor activities.
Funding
The Fund will make general operating support grants to organizations that represent, strengthen and expand access to outdoor spaces and nature-based learning for Wabanaki and BIPOC groups, including those that serve LGBTQIA2+, people with disabilities, and poor and working class people and communities.
The ten (10) groups selected for the Outdoor Equity Fund cohort will each receive general operating grants of $30,000 paid annually over three (3) years, $10,000 per year. In addition, they will be invited to participate in a series of peer learning, training, capacity-building, and community outreach activities over the course of the three (3) year grant period.
