The National Federation of the Blind is the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans. Founded in 1940 and currently headquartered in Baltimore, the NFB consists of affiliates, chapters, and divisions in all fifty states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico.

Scholarship Program
Thanks to our generous partners, there are thirty $10,000 merit-based scholarships currently available. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, community service, and leadership. The finalists are announced every spring. They then attend our national convention in July when the winners of each individual scholarship are selected.
JAWS for Windows Scholarship
Vispero is proud to once again sponsor the JAWS for Windows scholarship. For over three decades, JAWS, the world’s most widely used screen reader, has helped expand educational and employment opportunities for people who are blind through speech and Braille access. This scholarship reflects Vispero’s continued commitment to innovation in assistive technology and to supporting the next generation of blind and low vision students and future leaders. “We are honored to give back by supporting scholarships that empower blind students to pursue their educational and professional aspirations and help them achieve their goals.” Each scholarship winner will receive a five-year JAWS, ZoomText, or Fusion Access license of their choice.

The National Federation of the Blind offers several scholarships and awards that honor blind individuals as well as teachers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and organizations whose work benefits the blind community.
Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards
The Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards honor individuals and organizations that are a positive force in the lives of blind people.
Applicants for the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards must demonstrate exemplary leadership and extraordinary accomplishments in improving the lives of blind people in the United States.
An application for an award can be made either by the applicant directly or by third parties who nominate an applicant.
Each application requires an essay describing the work or project to be recognized. In addition, applications must have at least one letter of recommendation in support of the nominee.
The National Federation of the Blind determines the total amount available for the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Awards each year based on the trust income received. The number of awards and the amount of each award will be determined by the NFB’s Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award Committee based on its evaluation of eligible and deserving applicants.
Each year, to the extent feasible as determined by the committee’s evaluation of applications received, one or more awards will be made to applicants in each category: blind individuals, sighted individuals, and corporate or organizational entities. However, the committee is not bound to make an award in each category during each competition year and may not do so if an application meeting the selection criteria is not available.

Every year, the Distinguished Educator of Blind Students Award recognizes an outstanding teacher of blind students. The education of blind children is one of the National Federation of the Blind's highest priorities. Regions Matching Gifts for Recent Retirees
Retirees of Regions and its affiliated companies are eligible for the Matching Gift Program for up to 5 years after retirement (the gift date must be within the first 5 years of retirement). Regions will match donations of $25 or more, up to a total of $1,000 per year per retiree.

Nonprofit Federal Resilience (NFR) Grant Program
On Tuesday November 18, 2025, the County Council unanimously passed Resolution 20-979 that appropriated $1.5 million for the FY26 Nonprofit Federal Resilience Grant Program. The goal of this Grant Program is to provide funding to 501(c)(3) nonprofits to offset cancelled or delayed Federal funds due to the recent Federal Government shutdown or other adverse administration actions. Grant Program awards will supplement core operating and salary costs required to sustain the organization in the absence of federal funds. The Grant Program will be limited to nonprofits and their federally funded programs providing direct services to Montgomery County residents.
Awards are expected to range from $25,000 to $300,000.
Funding Priorities
Outside of the Eligibility Criteria above, funding will be awarded by prioritizing how the cancelled or delayed Federal funds due to the Federal Government shutdown or other adverse administration actions impact the solvency of the organization over the next 12 months. Note that delayed disbursement of funds will be treated the same as the cancellation or termination of a grant award.
The Priority Goals of this funding are in the following order:
Organizations and their staff based in Montgomery County, MD will also be prioritized over organizations and their staff based in other jurisdictions.
It is up to applicants to clearly articulate how they meet the priority criteria in their proposals so that they are weighted and scored appropriately.
The NABG is honored to provide scholarships to Undergraduate and Graduate students enrolled full-time in Geoscience programs at an accredited college or university.
Scholarship candidates must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to the mission of NABG. The purpose of the scholarship is to prepare candidates to be the workforce of the future.
Funding for scholarships – totaling over $300,000 – has been achieved through fundraising activities and corporate donations.

Barbara and Nicole Heacox Foreign Study & Travel Fund
Bob Heacox lost his wife, Barbara, to cancer in 1990. A few months later he lost his daughter, Nicole, in a tragic accident. At the time of her death, Nicole was a Grand Haven High School student. To help fill the void left by a wife and mother, daughter and sister, Bob and his son, Paul, established a unique Memorial Fund at the Foundation in 1992. While the majority of the Foundation's Scholarship Funds help current graduating high school seniors, the Barbara and Nicole Heacox Foreign Travel and Study Fund assists deserving students, of all ages, who might not otherwise have the opportunity to travel and study in a foreign country.

Charles Rycenga and his wife Eleanor were well known in the Tri-Cities area for their philanthropy and community involvement.
In 1991, Mr. and Mrs. Rycenga established this scholarship fund to assist graduates of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Western Michigan Christian High Schools to continue their education.

Charles Robertson Scholarship Fund for Education
This scholarship fund is a memorial to the life of Charles Robertson, established by his wife and family. Chuck was the woodshop teacher at Grand Haven Junior High School for 36 years. During his life, Chuck's leadership and organizational qualities were always present and active. He took a broad world view and always found ways to do good things for others. This scholarship supports students who have graduated from a Tri-Cities area public high school. Chuck enjoyed working with his hands, he was a creative problem solver, and he had a curiosity about the world around him.
This scholarship keeps the memory of Chuck alive and hopefully inspires the award recipients to live a life of passion and active involvement.
