Community Foundation of Henderson County was incorporated in 1982 by a group of fourteen dedicated and compassionate local leaders with the immediate need to manage two funds - the William C. Armstrong Scholarship Fund and the Charlie Renfrow Scholarship Fund, in addition to providing a permanent vehicle for citizens to give back to their community.

Joe T. Hunt Memorial Scholarship

Applicant must be a graduating senior who has lettered in varsity football. A recipient will be selected from Henderson and/or Jackson Counties in North Carolina. Applicant must demonstrate financial need and merit.

The BJA FY 2026 Intellectual Property Enforcement Program aims to bolster public health, safety, and the economy by combating counterfeit goods and product piracy. This funding opportunity supports the formation or enhancement of law enforcement intellectual property enforcement task forces. The Mentored Career Transition Award (KT1/R00) offers a biphasic funding opportunity for up to 5 years, supporting the transition of postdoctoral researchers to independent faculty positions. The first phase provides 1-2 years of mentored career development, while the second phase grants up to 3 years of independent research support, contingent upon satisfactory progress and faculty appointment. The Mentored Clinician Research Scientist Career Development Award (KC1) from the NIH supports clinician research scientists for up to five years, providing dedicated time for intensive research career development. The Rural Health Network Development Planning Program aims to enhance rural health care by fostering integrated health care networks. It focuses on collaboration among entities to bolster local capacity and improve care coordination in underserved areas. By achieving efficiencies and expanding access to essential services, the program seeks to strengthen the overall rural health system while promoting the use of health information technology and exploring innovative care delivery models.

The Rural Health Network Development Program aims to enhance health care access in rural areas by supporting integrated health care networks. It offers two funding tracts: the Network Advancement Tract for established networks to overcome operational barriers and the Network Development Tract for early-stage networks to plan and expand services. Both tracts focus on improving care coordination, health outcomes, and operational efficiency, thereby strengthening the rural health care system.

Jay and Linda Casselberry Scholarship

The purpose of the Fund is to provide a scholarship for higher education at accredited institutions including but not limited to: vocational, technical, college, or university levels of education. Assistance is for a graduating senior or a graduate of Henderson County or the surrounding counties served by the Foundation in North Carolina public schools, leading to a degree. The student must have good academic potential, show a need for financial support to continue his/her education, exhibit personal hardship and demonstrate the initiative to better one’s self.

The scholarship is renewable.

The National Pride Grant for LGBTQIA+ Small Businesses, opening for applications on April 22, 2025, offers $25,000 in funding distributed as $1,000 micro grants to 25 eligible LGBTQIA+ business owners. Jan F. and Harry J. Nolan Women’s Educational Scholarship

Applicant must be a female resident of the Henderson County area who wishes to pursue a college education. Applicant must be twenty-two years of age or older.

Katherine Schneider Gettman Scholarship

This scholarship shall be awarded to individuals with financial need who are pursuing a degree in any medically related field.

James B. Murphy Firefighter of the Year

The Firefighter of the Year award is an annual award bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the characteristics of a firefighter with an outstanding record of fire service achievements. Firefighter characteristics are not restricted to heroic action but encompass all aspects of a productive, dedicated and professional service at all levels. 

If heroic action is one of the reasons that the individual is being nominated, the Subcommittee on Awards for the Executive Committee must find no hard evidence that the individual was in violation of generally accepted safety standards at the time of the action. Such standards include, but are not limited to, abstinence from the influence of alcohol or drugs, the use of applicable protective equipment such as protective clothing and breathing apparatus, and adherence to accepted operating procedures, where these criteria were applicable at the time of the action.

John Paul Raywood Scholarship

This scholarship is to provide a post-secondary educational scholarship for children of an active, participating Knight of Columbus in good standing or of a deceased member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Joseph Maule Council #8923 of Arden, N.C. This scholarship is to encourage young men to join the Knights of Columbus. 

The Chef Ann Foundation's Get Schools Cooking program empowers K-12 school districts to shift from heat-and-serve meals to scratch cooking, ensuring students receive fresher and healthier food. By providing tailored technical support and comprehensive assessments, the foundation helps districts create strategic plans to enhance their meal programs over three years. With a vision of equal access to nutritious food for all children, the initiative also includes system improvement grants to facilitate successful implementation.

The AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship: Ken Viste Memorial provides $10,000 in tuition assistance to medical students entering their final year. Established to support future physicians, this scholarship aims to assist those from diverse backgrounds. Applicants must be residents of specific Midwestern states and enrolled in accredited medical schools, demonstrating a commitment to serving their communities. With a legacy of over $61 million in scholarships since 1950, the AMA Foundation continues to empower the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The AMA Foundation Award for Health Education recognizes the exemplary educational efforts of physicians, medical students, and residents dedicated to improving public health. Supported by a $3,500 stipend from the John P. McGovern Foundation, this award celebrates individuals who demonstrate outstanding commitment to service, community involvement, and leadership in health education. Eligible candidates include practicing physicians, with special consideration for those addressing issues related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
