Helen M. Thew Memorial Scholarship

Dorothy Ellen Thew, a lifelong member of the Marion community, left, as part of her legacy, a gift to create three scholarship funds at Marion Community Foundation. Dorothy, a noteworthy person in her own right, designated that three scholarship funds be created from her estate to honor beloved members of her family. The Helen M. Thew Memorial Scholarship honors her sister’s love of music and dedication to education.

Well educated, Dorothy was a 1936 graduate of Marion Harding High School and attended Hunter College, and Indiana, East Carolina, and Toledo universities. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy Waves in 1943 and had a naval career which spanned 30 years. Dorothy worked at the selective service board from 1943-1955 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Marion Depot until its closing in 1961. She retired from the Columbus Defense Supply Center in 1979.

Her civic involvements mirrored her military career. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a Plank-Owner of the Navy Lone Sailor Memorial Association and Fleet Reserve Association, as well as the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Association for Retired Persons, the American and Marion County Historical societies, Marion Senior Citizens and Central Christian Church of Marion.

The James Henry Smith & Gladys Manning Smith Scholarship Fund aims to support students with financial need and strong character, helping them achieve a college education. This renewable scholarship offers annual funding, covering tuition, fees, housing, and books, with awards between $6,000 and $7,000. Eligible applicants must be graduating seniors from Muscogee County, Georgia, maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and demonstrate community service. The scholarship reflects the Smiths' commitment to service and education.

The Helene Stoller Scholarship, established in September 2023 by Dr. Helene Stoller, aims to support students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math. The Health Foundation: Mini Grants support initiatives that promote healthy eating, active living, and mental health tailored to community needs. Awards ranging from $250 to $2500 aim to foster projects that enhance the well-being of individuals and families. Eligible recipients include non-profit organizations and governmental entities. However, funding does not extend to projects requiring religious participation. This grant presents an opportunity for communities to develop localized strategies to improve health outcomes.

The Swans Island Education Achievement Trust Fund, established in 1997 by the Maine Community Foundation, offers scholarship support to non-traditional residents of Swans Island pursuing further education beyond high school. This fund aims to assist those seeking college, vocational, or technical training, focusing on individual achievement, community service, and financial need. Scholarships may be renewable for up to four years, promoting educational advancement and community growth.

The M. Alton French Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation in 1983, offers renewable scholarships to residents of Lincolnville, Camden, Hope, Appleton, Rockport, Northport, and Islesboro pursuing post-secondary education. Available for graduating high school seniors and enrolled college students from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, or Leelanau County that are pursuing a degree in architecture or the building trades.

The Central States Manufacturing Scholarship Program, managed by the Tulsa Community Foundation, offers education scholarships to dependents of full-time Central States employees. This initiative encourages high school seniors and college students to pursue their educational goals by providing financial assistance for undergraduate studies. Established in 1998, the Tulsa Community Foundation supports charitable giving to enhance opportunities for the community and ensure future generations can meet their philanthropic needs.
