Improving the lives of women & girls most impacted by inequity in Washington 

We know that all women/girls are impacted by sexism. From WaWF’s race and gender equity focused learning of the past several years we also know that inequity is not experienced by all women in the same way. We know women of color experience the intersectional nature of race and gender in compounding ways. We know that trans women experience discrimination and harassment based on their gender identity in addition to any other identities they may hold.  

Our grants focus on women/girls most impacted by inequity. As a learning organization, this means we will continue to build on our understanding of race even as we apply a more targeted gender lens to our grantmaking. Targeted Universalism shapes our understanding of how to address the intersectional nature of inequities in our state. In simple terms, Targeted Universalism means setting universal goals that can be achieved through targeted approaches. Our universal goal is equity for all in Washington State, and we believe that goal is best achieved by supporting the women and girls most impacted by inequity

The Society for Ecological Restoration Northwest Chapter offers Student Research Grants up to $3,000 to support research that enhances ecosystem restoration in the Cascadia bioregion. Eligible applicants include social or natural science graduate students and upper-level undergraduates. The grant can cover various project expenses, fostering innovative approaches to restore natural systems while promoting the diversity of life in the region.

Inatai Foundation

Inatai Foundation is a 501(c)(4) serving and accountable to leaders and organizations with bold visions who are building power in racially diverse communities across Washington state. Our vision begins with them: their ideas, solutions, and dreams for transformational change.

As a foundation, we channel the funding, influence, and information we have to the leaders and organizations rooted in and led by the communities we answer to, so they have the resources, power, and opportunity they need to bring their visions to life.

Infrastructure Opportunities Grants

Infrastructure Opportunities grants provide support for specific power-building efforts that have been highlighted as essential by Washington nonprofits and community leaders.

The Infrastructure Opportunities Fund explores power-building efforts around specific issues that community leaders and community-based organizations have told us are integral to building community power and transforming systems and structures. They include:

• 501(c)(4) Community Power-Building: If your organization has decided that you would like to form a 501(c)(4), this grant can help you with that next step. This opportunity is designed for organizations wanting to expand the tools necessary to get more involved in activities like endorsing political candidates, advocating for ballot measures, influencing policies, and lobbying legislators.

• Civil Rights: Unjust and discriminatory policies, violence against marginalized groups, threats to our democracy, and other dangers to the well-being and safety of communities are civil rights violations. This grant is designed to support organizations with a clearly defined strategy and response to civil rights violations in your community.

• Immigrant Justice: Regardless of immigration status, people deserve to be treated equally. Whether that’s through safe working conditions, fair wages, access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities, language access, and protections from cruel and unjust immigration and justice enforcement (ICE) activity, this grant ensures you have the support to safeguard immigrant communities from discrimination or harm.

• Wealth & Asset Creation: A community’s well-being for generations to come often depends on the ability for organizations today to acquire assets like land and buildings and pay off capital debt. This grant supports those who are engaged in tipping power through asset development and projects that promote community ownership and visibility.

• Voter & Civic Engagement: Civic engagement is critical for battles toward equity and racial justice. This grant ensures you have the support to engage your community in the democratic process, from voter registration drives, get-out-the-vote campaigns, election protection programs, and more.

• Youth & Student Organizing: Youth organizing helps communities act on issues now while also preparing for the future. Whether you are advocating for youth priorities, bringing young people together, or offering youth leadership development opportunities, this grant supports your work to mobilize the next generation of leaders. Inatai defines youth as up to 30 years old.

The Jed Burtt Undergraduate Mentoring Grants, offered by the Wilson Ornithological Society, support mentors of undergraduate students engaged in ornithological research. Grants of $1,000 are awarded annually to two projects demonstrating exceptional mentoring and collaboration. Each mentor-student team can receive an additional $2,000 to attend a WOS annual meeting, where students present their findings. This initiative honors Edward H. Burtt, Jr., a notable mentor and past president of WOS.

The Zero-Emissions Access Program Grant (WA) aims to fund zero-emission carshare pilot programs in underserved communities with limited public transportation access. Grants range from $50,000 to $200,000, requiring applicants to match at least 10% of project costs. This initiative, supported by Washington's Climate Commitment Act, promotes clean transportation options to enhance mobility in areas facing high emissions.

The Youth Athletic Facilities Grants program, managed by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, supports the development and renovation of outdoor athletic facilities for youth. Eligible projects include ball fields, swimming pools, and skate parks, with a focus on serving communities of all ages. The program encourages innovative designs that enhance accessibility and promote diverse athletic activities. Grants are available for both small and large community projects, fostering inclusive recreational opportunities for young people.

The Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account supports the protection and enhancement of aquatic lands in Washington State. Established in 1984, it funds projects that improve public access and restore ecological health. Eligible applicants include local and state agencies, as well as Native American tribes. Projects may involve the acquisition or restoration of aquatic lands, with a funding cap of $1 million, of which $500,000 can be allocated for development or restoration efforts.

The Camp Fire NCW Scholarship, funded by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, supports high school seniors from Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, or Adams counties who have been active with Camp Fire NCW for at least two years. This scholarship aims to assist students pursuing further education at accredited institutions or vocational programs in the U.S. It encourages ongoing involvement in community service and offers renewal opportunities for recipients who reapply.

The Cakes for College Scholarship, provided by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, supports high school seniors from Wenatchee, Eastmont, and Cashmere who plan to attend Wenatchee Valley College. Up to 20 scholarships are awarded annually to students with a minimum 2.0 GPA who demonstrate engagement and strong communication skills. Established by the Keep It In the Valley Foundation, this initiative honors the legacy of founder Ben Paine, who benefited from a similar scholarship.

Creative West

Established in 1974 as a nonprofit U.S. Regional Arts Organization (USRAO), Creative West was founded on the belief that place matters to the creative process. Fifty years later, communities of place, practice, experience, and identity remain fundamental to our work, framing our understanding of how culture is creatively produced and collectively experienced.

Creative West empowers artists and culture-makers with direct, practical resources, delivered regionally.

We offer practical, equity-centered learning experiences and funding opportunities that connect and inspire artists, culture-bearers and communities to build a more inclusive sector, strengthen the arts field, and catalyze change.

Native Arts and Heritage Fund

The Native Arts + Heritage Fund (NAHF) is a community-rooted award program created to support Native American and Alaska Native artists, culture bearers, and cultural practitioners across the Creative West region.

Co-designed with Native-centered artists, advisors, and community leaders, NAHF centers care, cultural continuity, and self-determination. The fund honors Indigenous ways of knowing and values process over product, relationship over compliance, and well-being as a meaningful measure of impact. In addition to unrestricted funding, selected artists will participate in a three-month virtual cohort experience designed for connection, reflection, and shared learning.

NAHF is administered by Creative West, an organization that uplifts artists and culture bearers across the Creative West region by providing funding, mentorship, and culturally rooted support.

This is not a project-based grant.

This is an invitation into funding and relationships.

Applicants must provide a letter of support from an Alaska Native or Native American community member who can speak to their relationship to community and cultural work.

Unrestricted Funds May Be Used For:

• Covering food, rent, childcare, or transportation
• Supporting wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, or cultural

Washington Sea Grant (WSG) supports the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and coastal communities in Washington State. With a mission to promote research and education, WSG provides funding for conferences and events that align with its goals. Organizations can apply for sponsorships ranging from $50 to $2,500, fostering collaboration and community engagement while ensuring equitable access to natural resources and decision-making processes for all.

The Bud and Donna Corbin Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, supports graduating seniors affiliated with Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church. This scholarship honors Bud and Donna Corbin, who were dedicated to helping students in need. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need and possess strong moral character, integrity, and potential for academic success. Renewal is possible, allowing recipients to reapply and compete with new applicants. This initiative reflects a commitment to educational support in the community.

The L.B. Research and Education Foundation Grant Program supports U.S.-based nonprofits focusing on innovative education and health solutions for underserved populations. Eligible organizations can apply by submitting a 400-word concept paper, and selected applicants may receive funding ranging from $10,000 to $75,000. The Foundation prioritizes projects that foster critical thinking and creativity, address health disparities, and encourage collaboration. There are no application deadlines, promoting year-round engagement.

Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation

The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is Washington State's primary agency with knowledge and expertise in historic preservation. We advocate for the preservation of Washington's irreplaceable historic and cultural resources - significant buildings, structures, sites, objects and districts - as assets for the future. 

Courthouse Preservation Grant Program

In spring of 2005, the Washington State Legislature established the Historic County Courthouse Rehabilitation Grant program. Based on findings from a statewide survey undertaken in 2003, 33 of the state’s 39 counties were found to possess courthouses of historic and architectural merit. (With the passage of time, additional courthouses have become historic, increasing the total number of eligible courthouses to 35) Additionally, the study estimated over $90 million in needed capital improvements to these structures. To address this need, the Washington State Legislature has allocated nearly $31.4 million from the state capital budget since the 2005-07 biennium. Through thirteen funding rounds since the program’s establishment, eighty-eight (88) grants have been awarded to twenty-nine counties statewide. Grant funds have worked to leverage local funding resulting in nearly $75 million in total rehabilitation work to selected courthouses.

Grant funding assists county governments in rehabilitating their historic county courthouses. Together with matching funds raised locally, this money will foster economic development in numerous communities while working to preserve public buildings vital to the architectural and cultural heritage of Washington.

To receive funding, all rehabilitation work must meet historic preservation standards known as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. For more information about these preservation standards, visit the following website.

The Banner Bank Community Support Program offers grants to nonprofit organizations in Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho focusing on housing, youth development, financial education, and economic growth. Priority is given to programs aiding low- and moderate-income populations. Organizations applying must not discriminate and should support essential community services. Applications are accepted year-round, with a review period of 45-60 days. However, certain areas, such as individual scholarships and political organizations, are ineligible for funding.

Imagination Grants: Advancing Opportunity and Inclusion for People Experiencing Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Program Focus

Imagination Grants serve as a catalyst for strengthening or expanding the capabilities of an organization in service to its mission. These one-year grants are intended to fulfill an unmet need or provide a spark to advance initiatives or access additional funding in pursuit of broader community goals. 

The Paul Lauzier Scholarship offers financial assistance to graduating seniors and alumni of Grant County, Washington high schools attending colleges or vocational schools in the state. Eligible candidates include those pursuing undergraduate or vocational education who have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The scholarship considers academic achievement alongside community involvement and personal integrity. Awards are made annually, requiring reapplication each year, ensuring a fair opportunity for new applicants.

The Historic Cemetery Preservation Capital Grant Program, initiated by the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation in Washington State, aims to protect and maintain historic cemeteries. This program, established in 2016, provides funding for projects that enhance the preservation of these cultural resources, ensuring they continue to serve their communities and honor the veterans interred within. Collaborating with various partners, the program promotes the significance of historical heritage in the state.

The Wheeler Charitable Trust Grant, established by Ruth A. Wheeler and Henry O. Wheeler in 1982, focuses on supporting education and various charitable causes primarily in California and Washington. Applications are accepted year-round, with a deadline of July 1 for annual review in August. The Trust aims to uphold the values of generosity and resilience exemplified by its founders, funding areas such as arts, health, and human services.

The Andrew York Memorial Scholarship, established by Chelan County PUD employees, honors the memory of Andrew York, a victim of impaired driving. This scholarship aims to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and seat belt use. It is open to graduating seniors in Washington who are actively involved in their communities and committed to promoting safe driving practices. Preference is given to applicants connected to IBEW Local 77.

The Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse Projects, funded by the US Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation, invites proposals for innovative water reuse solutions. This program enhances water supply reliability and supports sustainable practices for urban and agricultural communities. By leveraging Federal and non-Federal resources, the initiative aims to address water scarcity and improve hydropower reliability, aligning with national priorities for energy and resource management.

The Spay/Neuter Grants program, funded by Washington State's SPAY ~ NEUTER ~ ADOPT license plates, aims to combat pet overpopulation. Since 2007, it has awarded over $615,000 to animal welfare organizations, facilitating nearly 20,500 spay and neuter surgeries for pets in need. Eligible nonprofit organizations must meet specific criteria, ensuring humane treatment and adherence to regulations. This initiative contributes significantly to creating a healthier, more sustainable pet population across Washington.

The Firearms and Archery Range Recreation Grant Program, established by the Washington State Legislature in 1990, plays a vital role in enhancing public safety and recreational opportunities. It funds the acquisition, development, and renovation of firearm ranges and archery facilities, supporting law enforcement, sports groups, and community needs. By investing in these spaces, the program ensures that Washington's outdoor recreation resources are preserved and improved for current and future generations.

The Education and Enforcement-Nonhighway and Off-Road Vehicle Activities Grant Program in Washington supports the development and management of outdoor recreation opportunities, such as hiking and off-road vehicle use. It promotes environmentally responsible behaviors through education and enforcement initiatives. Funding, sourced from gasoline tax and vehicle use permits, is available biennially to various eligible applicants, including local agencies and Native American tribes, enhancing public access to natural resources.

The WaterSMART Enhancing Water Resources Projects program invites eligible entities to secure funding for initiatives that enhance water resource management across various sectors, including conservation, infrastructure improvement, and watershed restoration. Priority is given to projects that collaboratively address community needs and yield significant environmental benefits. This funding opportunity aligns with federal priorities aimed at optimizing resource use and improving grant oversight, as outlined in recent executive orders.

The WaterSMART: Desalination Construction Projects initiative by the Bureau of Reclamation aims to enhance water supply reliability through cooperative funding and support for desalination facilities. This program aligns with federal priorities to improve energy and resource management, encouraging proposals that diversify local water sources. By focusing on innovative solutions to water scarcity, the initiative promotes sustainable water management practices, especially for growing communities facing water shortages.

The Aerospace Career Enhancement (ACE) Scholarship is designed for eligible American Indian and Alaska Native students pursuing engineering and high-demand degrees in Washington state. In partnership with SPEEA, this need-based scholarship offers $5,000 annually, with additional support for recipients with dependent children. The program aims to assist students entering professional or technical careers in the aerospace industry, ensuring they have the resources necessary to succeed in their educational and career goals.
