Scholarships

The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County provide scholarship opportunities for local students to pursue their educational goals. Carol A. Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Carol A. Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for current students of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Award Type: Single Year Award. Previous recipients are encouraged to re-apply in consecutive years.

Community Foundation of Henderson County's Scholarship Program began in 1984. Thanks to the generosity of passionate donors, over 2,000 traditional and non-traditional students have been provided more than $10 million in scholarships to pursue higher education.

Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited William L. Arbuckle Memorial Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be accepted to an accredited degree granting college or university within the Southern Appalachian Region. Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the field of fisheries, aquaculture, freshwater biology, or other related fields. 

Beckley Area Foundation

Beckley Area Foundation was established in January 1985 by ten community-minded citizens. It began with a gift of $1.1 million from the Dr. Thomas Walker Memorial Health Foundation as “seed” money for this Raleigh County project. BAF assets have grown to over $70 million with over 500 different funds managed by our three trustee banks. Today, Beckley Area Foundation is one of West Virginia’s largest community foundations.

Since its inception, BAF has distributed over $23 million to charities and other worthy projects in the fields of education, public recreation, health & human services, the arts, animal services and beautification.

Scholarships

The Beckley Area Foundation proudly manages scholarship funds established by individuals, businesses, and organizations dedicated to helping students pursue higher education. Many of these scholarships are tailored for specific schools, fields of study, or graduates from local high schools, while others offer broader opportunities. No matter the path, our scholarships aim to support students from our region as they work toward achieving their educational goals.

Most of these scholarships must be awarded to students from our geographic area or at least preference given to such students. While the majority of scholarships benefit Raleigh County applicants there are others designated for Fayette, Summers, Webster, and Wyoming students. 

Ernest V. Bowman Memorial Scholarship Fund for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Graduates of Raleigh, Fayette, Summers, Mercer or Wyoming counties of West Virginia attending VA Tech; College upperclassmen (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) as well as graduating seniors; Engineering field of study; “B” average or better; Need based.

This scholarship is renewable.

The NCAC-SOT Fall Symposium Trainee Abstract Award supports students and postdoctoral researchers presenting their work at the National Capital Area Chapter Fall Symposium. Eligible candidates must be enrolled full-time in an academic program within the MD, VA, DC region and submit a concise research description. Awards include $200 for first place and $100 for second place, encouraging scholarly engagement and innovation among trainees.

With a mission to celebrate community folklore, the William G Pomeroy Foundation provides Virginia 501(c)(3) organizations, nonprofit academic institutions, and government entities with funding for Legends & Lore roadside markers. Eligible projects commemorate local folktales, legends, or folklife, and may complement educators’ efforts to engage communities around cultural heritage and history.

Nonprofit organizations serving children and youth in Virginia can receive in-kind toy donations to support play-based comfort and enrichment. With a mission to bring the benefits of play to children in need, The Toy Foundation provides member nonprofits quarterly access to donated toys from regional distribution facilities.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

The NRA Foundation: Virginia Grants are designed to promote charitable purposes related to firearms and shooting sports, adhering to IRS 501(c)(3) requirements. Eligible organizations include nonprofit entities and government agencies with an EIN. The foundation supports educational programs, research in firearms safety, and community benefits, while excluding commercial ventures and fundraising activities. Grant requests should align with the foundation's mission to foster safety and education in the shooting sports and related activities.

Virginia nonprofits supporting individuals affected by child labor or working to prevent child labor exploitation can access funding through Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Foundation for direct services and capacity-building. Grants may support basic needs, legal aid, youth enrichment, education and vocational training, financial literacy, or staff training, with priority for projects serving Accomack County.

The Emergency Community Water Assistance Grants in Virginia provide essential funding to help communities prepare for or recover from emergencies affecting safe drinking water access. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, nonprofits, and federally recognized tribes. Grants can fund projects like water transmission line repairs and construction of water sources, with amounts reaching up to $1 million. This initiative supports rural areas in restoring access to reliable drinking water after disasters.

The Costume Society of America (CSA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded on March 23, 1973, and incorporated in the state of New York on September 12, 1973. CSA serves it members, and promotes its goals with national symposia and publications including the journal Dress and its monthly electronic newsletter CSA e-News.

The organization began forming regional groups in 1978. There are six regional groups in the United States and Canada, and one international group. Individual regions hold annual meetings, sponsor programs and publish newsletters.

Colleen Callahan Professional Development Award

Members are invited to apply for the Professional Development Grant offered by Southeastern Region of the Costume Society of America. Awards will be made at a minimum of $250 with the total award not to exceed $1000. Your project may be on any aspect of costume, any technical skill, or any administrative expertise which will further the mission and purposes of the Costume Society of America. The grant money may be applied to research, a course, workshop fees, or travel.
