Grant-in-Aid (GIA) 

"Grant In Aid" is a program that the Alaska State Museum has been offering to museums and cultural centers across Alaska for over four and a half decades! There are two separate tracks that you may apply for. Museums and cultural centers can apply for either a Mini Grant or a Regular Grant but cannot apply for both. 

The Alaska State Museum (ASM) provides Alaska museums with funding to enhance museum services through the annual Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program. 

Both grant programs support projects that supplement or improve the services that a museum provides. Organizations can use grant awards for projects related to collections, exhibits, education, outreach, and organizational development. Funds can be used to purchase supplies and equipment, pay for contractual services or other items necessary to support and improve museum services and operations. Museums are encouraged to submit project proposals in support of consultations with Tribes as required under the new NAGPRA regulations. The program may consider proposals that provide funding for professional development and training. 

Regular Grants

Up to $12,000 are available to eligible museums and cultural centers of all sizes, regardless of size of operating budget. 

Arts, Health and Well-Being in Alaska Program

The Arts, Health and Well-Being in Alaska program supports creative projects that use the arts to improve health, reduce risk, and strengthen community connections through partnerships between artists, organizations, and the health sector.

This program is a pilot with a single application deadline, awarding grants to Organizations and Individuals for community-based and creative projects that integrate the arts to support the health and well-being of Alaskans. The impact of the arts on health and well-being can be seen at all stages of life, and the Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA) seeks proposals that will explore the practice of the arts, health and well-being. This pilot investment builds on previous granting and program development, including the Community Arts Partnership, Adaptation and Innovation, and Arts and Military programs of the Alaska State Council on the Arts.

Arts, Health and Well-Being in Alaska is a program of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, with funding support from Rasmuson Foundation. Arts and Health initiatives from the National Endowment for the Arts will inform the Arts, Health and Well-Being in Alaska.

The ACF: Social Justice Grants support organizations working to eliminate systemic discrimination and promote equal rights in Alaska. This fund prioritizes initiatives that address root causes of social injustice, encourage lasting mindset shifts, and enhance community empowerment. Eligible applicants include small organizations with a focus on social justice, providing both unrestricted operating support and project-specific funding. The foundation emphasizes equity, ensuring no discrimination based on protected statuses, and honors Tribal authority in grant distributions.

The Ted Smith Conservation Internship Program, established by the Alaska Conservation Foundation, aims to invest in young adults pursuing careers in conservation. This program offers undergraduates and recent graduates hands-on experience, practical job skills, and networking opportunities with conservation professionals in Alaska. Interns contribute to vital conservation efforts while gaining invaluable insights into the state's unique environment and cultures. Selected host organizations receive funding to support intern stipends for 12 weeks.

The Patterson Foundation offers Oral Health Grants to support programs that enhance access to dental care for underserved communities. Eligible 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations can apply for funding up to $35,000 for capacity expansion, $10,000 for personnel support, or $10,000 for program support. The foundation prioritizes projects led by volunteer dental professionals and requires follow-up reports for continued funding. Applications are accepted year-round through a two-step process.

The Alaska Watchable Wildlife Conservation Trust Grant Program, managed by the Alaska Conservation Foundation, offers grants up to $5,000 every two years to support projects enhancing sustainable wildlife viewing and education. This initiative aims to conserve Alaska's unique biological diversity. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations based in Alaska or with Alaska-based programs. The next application deadline is August 2025, encouraging innovative solutions to protect Alaska's vulnerable ecosystems and promote wildlife appreciation.

The NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award provides financial assistance to student-athletes who have exhausted their athletics eligibility, enabling them to complete their first undergraduate degree. Since its inception in 2001, nearly $9 million has supported approximately 1,875 athletes, with a remarkable 90 percent graduation rate among recipients. The award covers tuition costs up to $15,000 for remaining credits and may be used in the summer term or short terms surrounding the final undergraduate year.

The Advocacy for Children, Youth, and Families Grant, offered by Alaska Children's Trust, aims to strengthen advocacy efforts for children and families in Alaska. With up to ten grants available, each worth $3,000, eligible nonprofit organizations can engage in advocacy during the 2026 legislative session. This initiative supports activities that defend existing laws, propose new legislation, and prevent harmful policies, ultimately striving to safeguard the welfare of Alaskan children and families.

The Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative Grant supports crucial conservation efforts for shorebirds during their migration along the Atlantic Flyway. This initiative addresses threats such as human disturbance, habitat loss, and hunting in critical areas from the U.S. Atlantic coast to the Caribbean and South America. By promoting coordinated research and management, the initiative aims to ensure the survival of species like the American oystercatcher and red knot, fostering healthy migratory pathways.

The Alaska Office of History and Archaeology offers Historic Preservation Grants to support the rehabilitation of historic properties. Eligible applicants include individuals, non-profits, and local governments. The program provides up to 60% funding with a 40% cost-sharing match for various projects such as surveys, inventory, and planning. All work must adhere to The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties, ensuring the preservation of the property's historic character.

To preserve and interpret Alaska's rich maritime heritage the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the State Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAM) announce the launch of the Alaska Maritime Heritage Preservation Program. This program is designed to protect Alaska's maritime resources and advance public awareness of Alaska's nationally significant maritime properties, collections, traditional skills, and knowledge.

The Alaska Maritime Heritage Preservation Program will offer Alaskans two new grant opportunities for preservation and education projects.

Applicants for preservation grants can request from $15,000-$75,000 and applications for education grants can request from $10,000-$50,000.

Eligible projects must support the preservation, education, or interpretation of Alaska’s maritime heritage by addressing approved resource categories and demonstrating clear public benefit. Applications should reflect strong community value and alignment with program goals.

Projects must address one or more of the following resource categories:

• Maritime heritage collections
• Traditional maritime skills
• Maritime education activities
• Historic maritime properties (meeting National Register significance criteria)

Applications must also demonstrate:

• How proposed activities directly benefit one or more eligible resource categories
• Community and heritage value, supported through letters or documentation
• Clear alignment with program intent, including preservation, documentation, and education/interpretation of maritime heritage

The Alaska Sea Grant Biennial Research Call invites innovative proposals for research projects focused on healthy coastal ecosystems, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, resilient communities and economies, and environmental literacy and workforce development. Established in 1970, the program aims to enhance understanding and sustainable use of Alaska's marine and coastal resources. Proposals should align with the goals outlined in the Alaska Sea Grant 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, addressing priority information needs across the state.

The Collections Management Fund Grant, offered by Museums Alaska, supports the enhancement of collections management across Alaska's museums and cultural centers. Established in 2013, it provides funding for projects related to collections management, exhibitions, education, and programming. The program encourages applications from any department, fostering professional development and access to conservation resources. Museums Alaska, a statewide association, plays a crucial role in strengthening community engagement and preserving Alaska’s rich heritage.

The Community Support for Marine Debris Removal RFP aims to tackle the pressing issue of marine debris in Alaska's coastal and offshore waters. This initiative, funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program, empowers local communities by providing small grants to support their efforts in cleaning up litter and debris. The program addresses essential food safety and security concerns while promoting environmental stewardship and community resilience in the face of ongoing challenges related to marine waste.

The Coaching Enhancement Grant - Division II aims to enhance diversity in NCAA coaching by providing financial support for new assistant coaching positions. This grant specifically targets increased representation of ethnic minorities and women in athletics. Selected schools receive funding for three years to cover salaries and benefits, totaling $370,000 annually for up to 21 institutions. Eligible schools must be active NCAA Division II members committed to these diversity efforts.

The Strategic Alliance Matching Grant - Division II offers financial support to enhance ethnic minority and gender representation in mid- to senior-level athletics administration roles across NCAA Division II institutions. With an annual budget of $860,000, the grant aims to fund up to 20 schools and conferences each year. Eligible applicants must be active Division II members and are encouraged to collaborate with their human resources departments during the proposal process, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.

The Tribal Solar Accelerator Fund (TSAF) empowers tribal communities across the U.S. by promoting renewable energy projects and workforce development. This initiative has funded over 480 projects in Alaska, enhancing outdoor recreation and promoting environmental protection.

The AK Specialty Crop Block Grant program aims to enhance the production, knowledge, and sustainability of Alaska Grown specialty crops while supporting local farmers and communities. It is intended for professional producers, universities, and non-profits collaborating with schools or businesses. While it promotes various specialty crops defined by the USDA, certain agricultural products like livestock and dairy are excluded due to restrictions. The EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement-Focused Collaborations Program (RII-FEC) aims to enhance research capabilities in eligible jurisdictions by fostering partnerships among government, higher education, and industry. This program supports interdisciplinary teams of researchers to tackle significant challenges in STEM fields, promoting diversity and broadening participation. By integrating Minority-Serving Institutions and early-career faculty from underrepresented backgrounds, RII-FEC seeks to build sustainable STEM capacity and drive impactful discoveries across regions.

The Social Impact Theatre Grant Program supports innovative theatrical productions that address pressing social issues, fostering dialogue and community engagement. With a focus on sustainability, the program offers production-specific and change capital grants to eligible nonprofit organizations in select states. Grantees are encouraged to explore new models, deepen community connections, and support emerging leaders in theatre. Applications for the next cycle will open in Spring 2025, following the completion of the current funding round.

RBC Foundation – USA aims to enhance community quality of life by supporting non-profit organizations that promote diversity and positive change. In 2023, it awarded over $2.8 million in grants, prioritizing youth programs for ages 15-29, arts access for diverse populations, and mental well-being initiatives. The foundation encourages sustainable projects that foster economic independence, providing critical support for education, mental health, and cultural enrichment, thereby making a significant impact across various communities.

The Rasmuson Foundation, established in 1955, aims to empower Alaskans through program-related investments (PRIs). These financial tools, which include loans and equity investments, support charitable projects in housing, economic development, and nonprofit facilities. By increasing access to credit for nonprofits and community developers, the Foundation fosters homeownership, entrepreneurship, and community stability, while avoiding high-risk ventures that stray from its charitable mission.

The Youth Cultural Activities Grant, offered by the Alaska Children's Trust, aims to enhance youth mental health through cultural engagement. Eligible organizations can apply for up to $1,000 to support activities such as subsistence practices, traditional arts, language learning, and cultural celebrations. With rising mental health concerns among Alaska's youth, this funding will empower communities to foster cultural connections and provide supportive environments for young people, ensuring they thrive as the future of Alaska.

Alaska Airlines Corporate Giving supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations through in-kind donations and sponsorships. Focused on youth success, career readiness, care and belonging, environmental sustainability, and community resiliency, the program aims to strengthen communities served by Alaska Airlines. Organizations are encouraged to submit requests at least six weeks prior to events. However, support is generally granted on a one-time basis, and certain groups, such as those that discriminate or engage in capital projects, are ineligible.

The Alzheimer's Disease & Related Dementia Mini Grant, administered by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, provides financial support up to $2,500 for beneficiaries facing Alzheimer's and related conditions. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life and promote independent living among Trust beneficiaries through necessary equipment and services. Grants are awarded monthly, with applications due by the first Tuesday of each month, ensuring timely assistance for those in need.
