The Richard & Caroline T. The Sue Cook Winfrey Fund, managed by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, supports organizations aiding abuse survivors, focusing primarily on domestic violence and providing essential services for both children and adults. Established in a region with a rich philanthropic history, the Fund prioritizes residential facilities for children, ensuring they receive the care and support needed. The Hampton Roads Community Foundation, active since 1950, has contributed over $344 million to local nonprofits, showcasing its commitment to community welfare.

The Mary E. and Curtis M. Chappell Jr. Fund, administered by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, supports arts and humanities activities on the Virginia Peninsula. Grants range from $1,000 to $1,200 for arts projects and from $5,000 to $10,000 for high schools. The foundation has a rich history of giving, contributing over $344 million since its inception in 1950. Notably, it has established numerous scholarships and grants to bolster community initiatives.

The Richard S. Reynolds Foundation, established in 1955 in Richmond, Virginia, supports diverse community initiatives in education, healthcare, the arts, and the environment. With over $71 million granted to date, it aims to strengthen communities and foster future generations. The foundation prioritizes requests from IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) organizations while typically avoiding contributions to annual operational costs. Its commitment to impactful projects ensures a lasting positive influence both locally and globally.

The NRA Foundation: Virginia Grants are designed to promote charitable purposes related to firearms and shooting sports, adhering to IRS 501(c)(3) requirements. Eligible organizations include nonprofit entities and government agencies with an EIN. The foundation supports educational programs, research in firearms safety, and community benefits, while excluding commercial ventures and fundraising activities. Grant requests should align with the foundation's mission to foster safety and education in the shooting sports and related activities.

Our Story

The IBMA Foundation was created by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2007 with a bequest from the Richard Barnhart estate. Mr. Barnhart was a musician from northern Virginia who loved bluegrass and wanted to support educational programs for children. Since the beginning, our goal has been to support bluegrass-music-related educational, literary, artistic and historic preservation activities.

In our early years we produced Discover Bluegrass, an educational video that has been used in thousands of classrooms and libraries around the world. We have hosted dozens of teacher workshops and artist trainings. We created a bluegrass lesson plan competition and provided a network for leaders of after-school bluegrass programs.

Our project grants, which now total $25,000 a year, support bluegrass-related initiatives throughout the world. We also fund Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-grants ($7,000/year) which help schools to hire bluegrass bands for school programs. The Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award recognizes excellence in academic research. Six college scholarships are granted for students working in various areas of the bluegrass music industry. The Arnold Shultz Fund supports increased participation of people of color in bluegrass music with grants that total $30,000/ year. Fletcher Bright Memorial Grants for Young Musicians (age 18 and younger) help young people go to bluegrass music camps and workshops, take lessons, and purchase educational materials.

IBMA  Foundation Project Grants

The IBMA Foundation awards project grants each year, usually in amounts between $1,000 and $2,500. The deadline to apply is December 2, 2024. Projects must align with the Foundation’s mission in one of the following areas

• Arts & culture
• Education
• Literary or academic programs
• History preservation

The Elevance Health Foundation's Behavioral Health Grant aims to address significant challenges in mental health and substance use disorders. With a commitment of up to $90 million over three years, the Foundation seeks partnerships with nonprofits to enhance treatment access, promote prevention strategies, and alleviate loneliness among affected individuals. This initiative emphasizes innovative solutions and measurable outcomes, targeting both national and local programs, particularly in states with pressing health disparities.

The Jeffress Trust Awards Program in Research Advancing Health Equity supports Virginia-based partnerships in addressing systemic barriers to health equity. With funding up to $150,000 over two years, the program encourages innovative research in policy, systems, and environmental strategies. Eligible applicants include non-profits and municipalities, aiming to leverage community strengths to enhance health outcomes. This initiative prioritizes collaborative efforts and actionable insights to promote optimal health across Virginia's diverse communities.

The Virginia Heritage Fund Grant, supported by The Community Foundation of Rappahannock River Region, Inc., aims to preserve and promote the documentary history of the region. This initiative collaborates with museums, libraries, and historical societies to ensure that vital historical documents are safeguarded and accessible to historians and the public. Established through a generous donation from historian Paula Felder, the fund continues her legacy of dedication to preserving local history.

Virginia Humanities offers grants to support projects that delve into Virginia's rich history, culture, and communities. These grants aim to foster public engagement through initiatives like community discussions, history projects, and educational resources. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits and recognized educational institutions. Preference is given to organizations within Virginia, although external applicants focusing on Virginia-related subjects are also welcome. The program emphasizes inclusivity and the importance of connecting with a broad audience.

The Freeman Family Foundation Grant aims to enhance Virginia communities by funding organizations dedicated to the arts, children, and environmental causes. Established by Margaret and Robert Freeman, the foundation continues their philanthropic legacy, focusing primarily on 501(c)(3) exempt organizations. Applications must be submitted online or via accessible formats for assistive technology users. While there are no program or geographic limitations, preference is given to initiatives based in Virginia.

The VA AmeriCorps State Formula Planning Grant supports developing frameworks for AmeriCorps programs aimed at addressing community needs. With awards ranging from $75,000 to $240,000, these grants provide essential resources and technical assistance to organizations looking to enhance their service delivery. AmeriCorps programs focus on various areas, including disaster services, education, economic opportunity, health, environmental stewardship, and support for veterans. This initiative fosters collaboration among nonprofits and government bodies to strengthen community impact.

The Elevance Health Foundation's Food as Medicine Grant aims to enhance access to nutritious foods and improve health outcomes for individuals facing diet-related conditions. This initiative invites qualified nonprofits to submit proposals focused on scalable solutions that address food insecurity and promote health equity. The foundation prioritizes programs that demonstrate measurable outcomes and support whole-person health, particularly for populations at high social risk. Grants will be awarded for a term of 1-3 years, with funding based on program needs.
