About the Awards

The late Dr. James F. Fries, formerly professor emeritus of medicine at Stanford University, came up with the idea for the James and Sarah Fries Prize for Improving Health in a 1987 ascent of Nepal’s Makalu—one of the world’s highest peaks—when his party became trapped in a severe snowstorm and was ultimately unable to scale the mountain.

Following that experience, Dr. Fries returned to sea level and set about establishing a foundation to support a Nobel-like prize for health that now annually awards a $100,000 prize to an an outstanding leader judged by an expert panel to have done the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the field of health.

In 1992 the Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award was established in honor of Elizabeth Fries, daughter of James and Sarah Fries. The $50,000 prize is awarded annually to an individual judged to have made substantial contributions to their area of health education and health promotion. Sarah Fries remained active in the Fries Awards for Health program until her death in May 2017, and Jim Fries remained active in the awards until his death in November 2021.

The CDC Foundation is honored to partner with the James F. and Sarah T. Fries Foundation, which established and funds the award. As of 2016, the CDC Foundation manages and administers the Fries Awards for Health program, which include the James and Sarah Fries Prize for Improving Health and the Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award.

Scholarships

The CBCF scholarship is open each year. Scholarships awarded will be for the following academic year. Scholarships are available only to students who graduated from a high school in one of the counties in the CBCF Service Area: Aransas, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio. Thanks to our generous donors, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation (CBCF) offers scholarships to students from over 100 funds.

Downes - Jay and Rheba Downes Memorial Scholarship

Purpose

In memory of James Ed (Jay) Downes, an Alice businessman and civic leader, and his wife, Rheba. Mr. Downes founded and served as chief executive of Energy Dynamics, an oilfield equipment and service provider in the domestic and international markets. He was named 1995 Citizen of the Year by the Alice Chamber of Commerce and is a member of its Hall of Honor. He served on the Alice Industrial Foundation Board, the Alice/Jim Wells County Transportation Committee and served as president of the Jim Wells County Master Planners Association in 1993-1994. Jay was an avid golfer and understood the value of a university education. He died unexpectedly in 2000. His wife, Rheba, passed away in 2013.

The Community Foundation of Hancock County offers educational support for Hancock County, Indiana adults who are seeking post-secondary training or schooling to improve their career prospects. There are also some opportunities provided by specific businesses in the area. The application is open year-round until all funds are used.

Nancy King “Dare to Dream” Fund

The purpose of this fund is to honor the Greenfield Kiwanis Club, a group whose members were like family to Nancy, through the provision of scholarships to persons who wish to obtain additional education.

Adam D. Steiner Legacy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student within the Marshfield Area Community Foundation service area who will be majoring in agriculture, dairy science or industry, or veterinarian and attending school fulltime. Preference to students who grew up on a dairy farm.

The NIOSH Centers for Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing Safety and Health provide critical support to enhance worker safety and health in the vital AgFF sector. With a focus on high-quality interdisciplinary research, these centers aim to translate scientific findings into practical solutions, improve health outcomes, and engage with partners to promote best practices. By addressing health hazards and improving data coordination, these centers strive for a meaningful impact on the well-being of AgFF workers across the nation.

The NIOSH National Center of Excellence for the Prevention of Childhood Agricultural Injury (U54) aims to enhance the safety and well-being of youth in the agriculture sector. This initiative will conduct vital research, improve data collection, and implement effective interventions to mitigate risks faced by young workers. By collaborating with various stakeholders, the center seeks to translate scientific findings into practical solutions that promote healthier working environments for children in agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries.

This scholarship is for a non-traditional/returning student from the Marshfield area. Applicant must be attending/plan to attend UWSP at Marshfield or Mid-State Technical College pursuing an undergraduate degree. This scholarship is for students from the Marshfield area, attending the School of Nursing UW Eau Claire/UWSP at Marshfield OR Mid-State Technical College planning to enter the field of nursing. This scholarship is for students pursuing a degree in architecture, drafting, or construction. Preference to students from Marshfield, Columbus, or Neillsville High School who will be attending school full-time attending a 4-year school. Financial need is considered as a tiebreaker.

This scholarship is for a graduating high school senior, homeschooled, or current college student in their sophomore or junior year in the Marshfield Foundation service area studying videography or broadcasting.
