Daniel R. Miller (Fretts) Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Daniel R. Miller (Fretts) Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarship assistance for vocational and higher educational opportunities for Scottdale Borough/East Huntingdon Twp. youth. The fund was endowed by Daniel R. (Bob) Miller’s daughter Karen to honor the memory of her father and the Miller & Fretts families of the Scottdale Area. Bob Miller, for whom this scholarship is named, was born and raised in Scottdale. He believed that the core values instilled in him by his immediate Miller and Fretts relatives in the Scottdale area were a contributing factor to his later successful business career and other lifetime experiences.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide scholarship assistance to a graduating senior from Southmoreland High School who wishes to pursue a career in a traditional trade or modern equivalent (engineering, architecture, design etc.).

The David R. Miller and Sara G. Miller Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships for first year college students from Western Pennsylvania pursuing courses of study in engineering or manufacturing, or related trades.

Dorothy & Richard Barr Westmoreland County High School Scholarship Fund

The Dorothy and Richard Barr Scholarship Fund was created at The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County to provide scholarship support to Westmoreland County High School students who have demonstrated community leadership and strong academic performance. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. The applicant must also show community leadership in the form of volunteer activities inside and outside of school.

Dr. Roy D. Hoffman Scholarship Fund

The Dr. Roy D. Hoffman Scholarship Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation was created to assist students in Bedford and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania in acquiring post-secondary education.

A. Porter Spirit of ZHS Fund

A long time teacher at Zanesville High School. As a new teacher ZHS embraced her and she embraced the Blue Devils. Annette Porter is a first generation college graduate from a single parent home. While her parents supported her decision to go to college, it was necessary to incur personal debt which was and is common. This scholarship is available to help those students who may need a little financial help to take the first step toward college, and also make the collegiate experience less burdensome.

Becoming a Blue Devil was a process. Annette had a lot of help along the way, from Principals, Asst Principals, teaching peers, friends and family, so in an effort to pay it forward she has created this scholarship. “ Everyone of my students had potential, the most difficult thing was to convince them to work toward achieving it”. This scholarship will be awarded to a Blue Devil, not necessarily the most “spirited” but the Best Blue Devil who demonstrated all of the qualities that make up a Blue Devil.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

The AAO-HNS is the world’s largest organization representing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons – physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck.

About the CORE Grants Program

Since 1985, CORE has awarded more than 800 grants and more than $14 million for research projects, research training, and career development to further the specialty of otolaryngology. These grants, ranging in award size from $5,000 to $150,000, have been essential for increasing the research base for otolaryngology.

The CORE program brings greater scale and less fragmentation and overlap to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery research opportunities, reduces the aggregate costs of the individual grant programs, and enables a comprehensive overview of the spectrum of promising otolaryngology and head and neck surgery research/researchers to promote to NIH and other agencies.

CORE Grants Program: AHNS/AAO-HNSF Translational Innovator Award

The purpose of this award is to support contemporary basic or clinical research focused on neoplastic disease by full time academic head and neck surgeons; to promote novel translational research preferably with biomarker ideas. 

Research supported by this award should be specifically directed toward the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of head and neck neoplastic disease, and may be either basic or clinical/translational in approach. 

J. C. & L. A. Duke Employees' Assistance Fund

Grants from the Duke Fund are designed to:

• Help recipients achieve self-sufficiency and/or return to the workplace.
• Provide transitional assistance.
• Improve the quality of life for the employee and their family.

Selection Criteria

The applicant must have experienced a combination of the following factors:

• Financial hardship as a result of a catastrophic illness or accident.
• Lack or depletion of benefits available through the 3M Benefit Plan, personal benefit plans and/or other resources.
• In addition, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that a grant will substantially assist them in overcoming all or a portion of the adversity. Awards will be made without regard to race, creed, color, gender, individual marital status, religion or national origin.

Graduating high school seniors and 4-year college students pursuing journalism or media studies can receive up to US $15,000 through the Ocean State Media Scholarship, renewable for three additional years. Focused on higher education, the Rhode Island Community Foundation supports residents of Rhode Island or Bristol County, Massachusetts who demonstrate financial need and strong career potential.

Ornithology researchers and conservation professionals in Catron County, New Mexico can receive recognition for significant contributions to raptor ecology and natural history through the Fran and Frederick Hamerstrom Achievement Award. Focused on raptor science, Raptor Research Foundation invites nominations each spring, with recipients honored at the annual meeting and invited to deliver a plenary lecture.

With a mission to advance raptor science and conservation, Raptor Research Foundation provides Catron County, New Mexico ornithology professionals with a prestigious lifetime achievement recognition. The Partners for Raptors Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals with a career of impactful raptor research, conservation, and collaboration, offering a commemorative plaque and formal resolution rather than direct funding.

Students presenting ornithology research related to raptors at the Raptor Research Foundation’s annual meeting can receive US $325 - US $525 plus membership and publication support. Grants from Raptor Research Foundation help Catron County, New Mexico students and other U.S. presenters fund high-quality oral or poster presentations on birds of prey.

High school seniors pursuing visual, performance, or media arts degrees can receive single-year scholarships of US $1,000 from Pittsburgh Foundation, including students from Catron County, New Mexico who meet the criteria. Eligible applicants must demonstrate financial need, have at least a 2.5 GPA, and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university.

Nonprofit health organizations in Catron County, New Mexico can benefit when local physicians, residents, fellows, or final-year medical students are honored for excellence in LGBTQ health. The American Medical Association Foundation’s Excellence in LGBTQ Health Award provides a US $2,500 grant honorarium directed to a nonprofit of the honoree’s choice supporting LGBTQ health and services.

The Walter Read Hovey Memorial Fund, established by The Pittsburgh Foundation in 1945, offers scholarships for aspiring art historians and related fields. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend graduate school. The Kenneth P. Rutter Scholarship Fund was established at The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County to award a scholarship to a traditional or non-traditional applicant residing in Westmoreland County, who has achieved a high school diploma or equivalent including a GED or Home School certificate. Preference will be given to students who seek to enter the Christian Ministry, and/or who have exhibited a strong interest in Community Service and Humanitarian Service.

Description

The ACS Catalyst Scholarship is an education initiative designed to support undergraduate students pursuing chemistry or chemistry-related fields. The Robert Bulger Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County by a community member and long-time supporter of Jeannette District Memorial Hospital in honor of its former CEO and President, Robert J. Bulger. Scholarships are to benefit graduating high school senior from Jeannette High School, Hempfield High School and Penn Trafford High School who wish to earn credits within the healthcare field that lead to an associate degree, diploma, certificate or a baccalaureate degree program at a two or four-year institution.

The Kennametal Scholarship Fund was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to support students in Southwestern Pennsylvania with financial need pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related degrees. The purpose of the scholarship is to broaden the awareness of opportunities in STEM by supporting students who have been disproportionately affected by systemic barriers to educational achievement.

ACS Graduate Student Success Grant

Purpose

To support graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.), within one year of degree completion, whose education and training were disrupted due to termination or cancellation of research grants. Funding will be given to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the lab. This one-year award, the ACS Graduate Student Success Grant, will enable students to complete their degree programs. The grant seeks to lower the risk of a declining number of U.S.-trained chemists with advanced degrees, thereby preserving the strength and continuity of the scientific community.

Description

The ACS Graduate Student Success Grant provides $25,000 for one year to a faculty member who lost funding after October 1, 2024, that supports one or more graduate students. The award will also connect supported graduate students to ACS career development resources and programming to catalyze their transition into the workforce.

The grant funds will be awarded to exclusively support graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.) who are within one year of degree completion and in need of funds to ensure degree completion. This grant supports currently enrolled graduate students who conduct research related to the chemical sciences in a department at a U.S.-based institution of higher education. Each institution of higher education can receive a maximum of one ACS Graduate Student Success Grant.

Applicant must provide a signed letter on institutional letterhead from the Vice President of Research (or equivalent), confirming the institution’s support, including the following:

• The PI’s loss of funding due to grant termination or cancellation after October 1, 2024.
• The names, current academic status, and anticipated graduation time of the impacted graduate students.

Pittsburgh ERG Scholarship Fund

The Pittsburgh ERG Scholarship formed by employees of Microsoft delivers on the mission of Microsoft’s local employee resource group to support diversity and inclusion. This scholarship enables high school students with disabilities and/or financial needs to go to college and pursue a career in technology. In addition, we hope to contribute to increasing the pool of people living with a disability enrolling in higher education and, in the long term, decrease the unemployment bias for this demographic. This scholarship will be awarded to promising high school seniors living in the city of Pittsburgh who plan to attend a vocational or academic college and have a financial need. The amount of this multi-year renewable scholarship is $12,000 payable over four years ($3,000 per year). (Immediate family members of Microsoft employees are not eligible for this scholarship.)

• Award Type: Multi-Year (up to 4 years). Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and enrollment in the stated major.

The Professional Nurses of Southwestern PA Scholarship Fund, established by The Pittsburgh Foundation, supports nursing education for students in nine counties of southwestern Pennsylvania. This scholarship aims to assist those pursuing a Pre-Licensure RN, BSN, Master's, PhD, or DNP programs. Eligible applicants must have completed one semester in a nursing program and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. The fund continues the legacy of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, promoting leadership and service in nursing.
