Best Grants for Creative Writing in Ohio

Ohio arts and cultural nonprofits and other organizations providing arts programming can receive up to US $5,000 in one-year project support to deliver writing, literature, and other arts activities. Ohio Arts Council provides Ohio creative groups with flexible funds for artistic, administrative, marketing, education, or evaluation expenses, with a required 1:1 cash match.

Ohio arts and literary nonprofits and other organizations providing arts programming can access funding for capacity-building projects, such as hiring consultants, planning and evaluation, or staff professional development. Ohio organizations working in writing, literature, or other arts disciplines may be eligible for US $1,000 - US $5,000 from the Ohio Arts Council to strengthen internal operations.

With a mission to support arts organizations, Ohio Arts Council provides Ohio writing, literature, and other arts groups with four-year general operating support. Eligible applicants include mid-sized and large nonprofits, colleges, universities, and other entities offering public arts programming that have prior OAC grant history and meet income and matching fund requirements.

Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in Ohio can access funding through Arts Midwest’s GIG Fund: Arts and Wellness to support arts-based wellness projects. Grants of US $2,000 - US $15,000 may fund performances, workshops, creative aging, or programs engaging veterans, including initiatives centered on writing and literature, between December 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.

Literary Arts Project Grants

As part of its Literary Arts Initiative, South Arts is pleased to announce Literary Arts Project Grants supporting literary arts organizations and small presses that focus on contemporary literary arts.

These grants advance South Arts’ commitment to amplifying the literary traditions and artistic practices of the American South by directly supporting the development, production, and public engagement of high-quality literary projects.

Literary Arts Project Grants support projects in poetry, fiction, creative or literary nonfiction, young readers’ literature, and drama (scriptwriting). Projects must demonstrate artistic excellence, editorial rigor, and meaningful public or community impact.

Award Amount

South Arts will award up to $5,000 per project to eligible literary arts organizations and small presses.

Early-career fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry writers in Ohio and across the U.S. can access funding and mentorship through the Emerging Voices Fellowship, which offers US $1,500 honorariums and a five-month virtual program. PEN America provides one-on-one mentorship, craft workshops, industry access, and community for writers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Early-career Native writers and poets in Ohio and across the U.S. can access funding to develop new creative projects, including fiction, poetry, and other literary work. Native Arts & Cultures Foundation’s LIFT program offers US $10,000 one-year awards plus professional development, evaluation, and marketing support for eligible individual artists.

Biographers with a single-author work published by a U.S. trade publisher can apply for PEN America’s PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography, awarding US $5,000 for an outstanding biography. Authors in Ohio and beyond writing rigorously researched, literary biographies may be eligible if their books meet the publication-year and format requirements.

Authors of intellectually rigorous nonfiction books published in the U.S. can receive US $10,000 for works that illuminate important contemporary issues. Grants from PEN America help Ohio and other writers of creative nonfiction and memoir gain recognition for distinguished literary merit and critical perspective through the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction.

Publishers of book-length poetry translations in Ohio can access funding through PEN America’s PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, which awards US $3,000 to the translator of the winning book. Eligible titles are original translations into English, published by a U.S. trade publisher, and may involve up to two translators and one original author.

Focused on writing and literature, PEN America invites translators of original book-length literary prose into English to apply for its PEN Translation Prize. Eligible works must be published by a U.S. trade publisher, including those in Ohio, and the winning translator receives US $3,000 plus recognition through PEN America’s official emblems.

U.S.-based African American writers, scholars, and researchers working in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, or research can receive $15,000 and a residency in Columbus, Ohio through the Aminah Robinson Writer/Scholar/Researcher Residency. Grants from Greater Columbus Arts Council support uninterrupted creative work and community engagement with the Columbus arts scene, benefiting those focused on storytelling, heritage, and Black cultural expression.

Individual writers and art critics in Ohio can receive approximately US $1,000 plus mentorship and training to develop publishable art criticism. International Association of Art Critics – USA Section (AICA-USA) supports writing and literature by offering a six-week hybrid fellowship with lectures, one-on-one mentoring, and publication on its website for U.S. and Puerto Rico residents aged 24 and older.

Creative writing and theater educators, scholars, and practitioners in Ohio working on Shakespeare-related projects may be eligible if they are members of the Shakespeare Association of America. Shakespeare Association of America supports writing and literature in Ohio by honoring pioneering public-facing work that engages broad and diverse Shakespeare audiences through teaching, scholarship, performance, or activism.

Ohio scholars and creative writers working in writing and literature can receive recognition for their first scholarly monograph through the SAA First Book Award, presented by the Shakespeare Association of America. Current SAA members whose first book-length work with a significant Shakespeare component is published between September 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025 may be eligible.

Doctoral scholars with dissertations featuring a significant Shakespeare component can apply for recognition and support from the Shakespeare Association of America; awards honor completed work rather than fund new projects. Focused on writing and literature, SAA invites eligible members, including those based in Ohio, to submit dissertations approved between September 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025.

Ohio scholars and writers focused on Shakespeare and performance studies can seek recognition for outstanding published work through the Barbara Hodgdon Award, administered by the Shakespeare Association of America. Eligible applicants must be SAA members in good standing, submitting a single article on Shakespeare and performance that appeared in print or online within the specified calendar year.

The PIDS Foundation's Apprenticeship Program fosters early-career pediatric infectious diseases physicians, enhancing their skills in academic publishing. Named in honor of Ralph D. Feigin, the program offers junior faculty members the opportunity to engage with the editorial process of the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. Recipients will contribute to manuscript discussions and special projects, committing approximately four hours weekly. The award will be presented during the PIDS Annual Membership Meeting at IDWeek 2025, with the term spanning October 2025 to October 2026.

The ISF Media Scholarship Program, established by the Islamic Scholarship Fund, supports American Muslim students pursuing degrees in media-related fields. With scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $5,000, the program aims to enhance Muslim representation in media and policy, counter negative portrayals, and foster positive narratives. Eligible applicants must be full-time students or working professionals in supported majors like media studies and journalism, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The RWA Perseverance Fund, administered by the Romance Writers of America (RWA), supports members in financial need for their annual national dues. RWA, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to advancing the interests of romance writers through advocacy and networking. The fund is available to applicants who can demonstrate financial need and commitment to a career in romance writing. Eligibility includes submitting proof of work, while ensuring a respectful and inclusive environment for all members.

Hendrix-Murphy Foundation

Enhancing literature & language at Hendrix College since 1978.

In homage to Bertie Wilson Murphy’s passion for the study and appreciation of literature and language, the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation at Hendrix College was founded in 1978 with an endowment by her son, Charles H. Murphy, Jr., former CEO of Murphy Oil Corporation. Mrs. Murphy was a 1905 graduate of Galloway Women’s College in Searcy, Ark., which merged with Hendrix College in Conway in the 1930s. Charles H. Murphy, Jr., was a member of the Hendrix Board of Trustees and served as chair. 

The Foundation's programs are overseen by a Board of Directors that is headed by the president of the College and includes Murphy family members, the provost, and representatives from the Hendrix Board of Trustees.

The Hendrix-Murphy Book Award

Hendrix is proud to offer the Hendrix-Murphy Book Award to an outstanding high school junior who demonstrates distinguished scholarship or leadership in literary studies (English, creative writing, foreign languages, or drama).

Hendrix-Murphy Book Award recipients will receive a copy of Poems to Read: A New Favorite Poems Anthology, edited by Robert Pinsky and Maggie Dietz.

Students may be nominated by their English, languages, creative writing, or drama teacher or guidance counselor by using the required form.

U.S. authors with a single‑author science book published in the eligible year can receive US $10,000 for literary science writing, including writers based in Ohio. PEN America supports writing that explains physical or biological sciences for general readers; permanent U.S. residents and citizens may submit through their publishers.

Ohio creative nonfiction authors with a U.S.-published collection of essays can access funding through PEN America’s PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, which offers US $15,000. Eligible books are single-author essay collections from seasoned writers, published by a U.S. trade publisher, with authors who are permanent U.S. residents or citizens.

Poets with distinguished, single-author poetry collections published by a U.S. trade publisher can receive US $5,000 for work that expands the scope of American poetry. With a mission to celebrate creative expression, PEN America provides permanent U.S. residents or citizens, including those in Ohio, with this annual PEN/Voelcker Award opportunity.

The PEN Open Book Award, presented by PEN America, recognizes literary works by authors of color published in the U.S. during the year. With a focus on diversity, it awards a $10,000 prize and a residency in Italy to authors who have not yet garnered significant media attention. This award promotes underrepresented voices in literature, celebrating fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that challenge the norms and enrich the literary landscape.

The PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers, awarded by PEN America, recognizes twelve emerging writers annually for their debut short story published in a literary outlet. Each winner receives a $2,000 cash prize, and their stories are published in an anthology by Catapult. The prize aims to foster new voices in fiction, inspired by Robert J. Dau's legacy, highlighting the importance of literary excellence and encouraging the next generation of writers.

The PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection recognizes an outstanding debut collection of short stories by a talented fiction writer. Awarded by PEN America, this prize highlights the literary achievements of new voices in fiction and offers a $25,000 cash prize to support the winner's future work. Established in memory of Robert W. Bingham, it honors his commitment to nurturing young writers and their contributions to literature.
