In Rhode Island, we support our public schools with an annual investment of $2.3 billion. To ensure that we invest these taxpayer dollars wisely, we have developed an education-finance system that takes into account both student need and district capacity. In addition, we seek every opportunity for statewide efficiencies to help save taxpayer dollars and to provide additional resources to advance student achievement.

The state of Rhode Island provides direct financial support to public schools and non-profits through other state-funded grants.

Child Opportunity Zone (COZ) 

Rhode Island’s Child Opportunity Zones (COZs) are a full service community school model of school-linked family centers that bring schools, families and communities together to promote success in school for all children and youth.

COZs are welcoming places in or near schools where families can access education, health and social service programs, supports and referrals to address barriers to student achievement at the highest levels. Each COZ bases its coordinated system of services, programs and supports on the individual needs and resources of its schools, families and community.

The following list provides examples of the kinds of services, programs and supports are offered by COZs:

• Before and after school programs
• Early childhood programs
• Adult education, including GED, ESL, basic literacy, etc.
• Health screenings
• Legal aid
• Referrals to social service and health service agencies
• Family engagement activities to support families involvement in their child’s school or child’s educational process
• Parent leadership training and opportunities

CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

The Anthony F. Cordeiro Charitable Foundation was incorporated in 2017 with the goal of serving individuals in the communities in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Anthony F. Cordeiro Charitable Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations serving communities in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island whose mission supports and enriches the lives of families and children. The Foundation’s goal is to assist those burdened by life’s challenges by providing access to vital resources including, but not limited to, health and mental health services, food and shelter.

Foundation History

Since 1932, the Foundation has awarded nearly $725 million.

Champlin’s investment in Rhode Island’s nonprofit community for the past nine decades has been almost entirely for capital projects. These investments have enabled better medical care, improved educational outcomes, expanded access to social services, fostered economic impact, conserved open space, preserved historic buildings, cultivated creativity and artistic expression, safeguarded care for animals, and more.

It all started with Stanton B. Champlin. Champlin was only twelve years old when he ran away from his family farm in South Kingstown, RI. It was 1838, and he moved to Providence and became a jeweler’s apprentice. Years later, he would establish the S.B. Champlin Company with his only son, George Byron Champlin. It would grow beyond jewelry and become an industrial empire that expanded into the manufacturing of aluminum, copper and brass tube, jewelry wire, valves, hand trucks, pipe fittings, and hand pumps.

Through the leadership of Stanton Champlin, his son George Byron Champlin, and his grandson George Stanton Champlin, this vast conglomerate became a powerful economic engine that employed thousands and helped drive the economy of Rhode Island and the nation.

While the businesses were retired, the wealth has remained intact in service of Rhode Island, thanks to the creation of the first of the family’s philanthropic foundations in 1932 by the runaway’s grandchildren.

From the first gift of $50 to Rhode Island Hospital in 1933 to buy eyeglasses for the needy, to the preservation of thousands of acres of open space to the distribution of millions of dollars to support social services.

We continue to build on this rich tradition today, seeking to work in relationship with Rhode Island’s nonprofits, acting as a convener, a coach, and a facilitator for collective success and engagement. We prioritize listening and learning, especially with those organizations serving marginalized communities. The Champlin story is nearly a century old, yet it continues to evolve in new ways for the betterment of all our Rhode Island communities.

Challenge Grants

Challenge grants that enable organizations to leverage Champlin funding to secure matching donations are considered on a highly limited basis at the discretion of the Distribution Committee.

The foundation supports nonprofit organizations and agencies working in nine different fields:

• Arts & Culture: 
  • Creative expression enables greater understanding and a deeper perspective of our society. Artists give voice, spark imagination, and inspire. Creative communities are economic drivers. Supporting theaters, museums, music groups, and other arts organizations provides access for children and adults to enjoy Rhode Island’s exceptional artists and arts organizations.
• Conservations & Parks:
  • As the nation’s second most densely populated state, open space is a precious, priceless resource in Rhode Island. Preserves and parks contribute mightily to the high quality of life enjoyed in the Ocean State, which is why working with land trusts, conservancies, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, The Nature Conservancy, and others has been a priority for the foundation.
• Education:
  • Our young are a reflection of what our future will be. This is why Champlin maintains a focus on supporting those organizations and schools that provide equitable access to experience and learning—in the classroom, after school, or beyond. Whether it is funding equipment for classroom innovation or grants toward building infrastructure, for preparatory and enrichment programs or independent and charter schools, it all plays a role in Champlin’s grant strategy.
• Healthcare:
  • Every Rhode Islander deserves equal access to quality, affordable healthcare and a strong public health system in our state. This means ensuring that our local hospitals, community health centers, treatment centers, and other nonprofit healthcare providers have the infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment needed to provide quality care and service to all, regardless of the patient’s background or zip code.
• Historic Preservation & Heritage:
  • Learning from the past contributes mightily to understanding the present. Rhode Islanders respect and treasure their history—from First Nations, Colonial era, and the Industrial Revolution through the Great Wars. Historic homes, landmark locations, and museums are one reason Rhode Island is a fascinating place to live and visit.
• Libraries:
  • In the 21st century, libraries have evolved into hubs for education, professional development, and community engagement. In many communities, the local library also serves as an after-school haven and the access point to technology for young and old. With programming that fosters creativity, innovation, and dialogue, libraries across Rhode Island remain a home for knowledge and meaningful connection.
• Social Services:
  • We see and support the often-invisible heroes in our communities, whose efforts are providing our most vulnerable and marginalized populations with food, shelter, education, job training, and more. We are committed to keeping these essential agencies and organizations strong.
• Youth Services:
  • The Champlin family recognized the importance of investing in the young—the future leaders of industry, community, and government. From Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCAs to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, summer camps, and career and leadership development, supporting the organizations that help them to develop physically and mentally is a cornerstone of the Foundation.
• Welfare of Animals:
  • Sadly, animals have the same ability to suffer as humans. Our support of well-established regional organizations that offer care, adoption services, medical treatment, and more helps ensure that more animals across the state are healthy, well-nourished, and free from distress.

Opioid Settlement Impact and Recovery Grants

In January 2022, Rhode Island joined the national opioid settlement with three major opioid distributors, leading to over $90 million in funding for state and local efforts to address Rhode Island’s opioid crisis. Together with settlements secured by Attorney General Neronha, Rhode Island’s opioid litigation recoveries will total more than $200 million over time.

The Settlement Agreement states that all the funds will be directed to opioid abatement – including expanding access to opioid use disorder prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery.

The Rhode Island Foundation partnered with the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) in May, 2023, to award $3,250,000 of Settlement funds to 15 nonprofits to address opioid use, treatment and prevention.

Through our continued partnership with EOHHS, this year, the Opioid Settlement Impact and Recovery Grants program will award $1,700,000 – fully funded with Settlement dollars – in three categories:

• Trauma Supports:
  • $1,000,000 is available to support programming for trauma supports for Rhode Island first responders, including support for peer harm reduction and recovery specialists. We know that with the recent sharp rise in the number of overdoses in Rhode Island – and especially the large numbers of fatal and non-fatal overdoses – people who work on the front lines of the crisis are experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. Based on feedback from community partners and emergency medical services professionals, the most effective approach to addressing trauma associated with being a first responder would be to fund trauma supports outside of their place of work. Day-to-day trauma experienced by first responders is a risk that leads to burn-out and other mental health symptoms. We also know that, due to stigma, most first responders are less likely to seek typical clinical treatment.
  • Therefore, we are seeking to fund innovative trauma-informed programs for first responders (including emergency medical personnel, law enforcement, and peer responders). Programs should be designed to address these traumas outside of their respective workplaces to allow first responders to have a safe space to address workplace traumas, with the goal of preventing mental health crises and helping first responders more easily return to work.
• Family Supports:
  • $450,000 is available to support programming by organizations made up of or serving families of people who use drugs, people in recovery, or people who have passed away because of an overdose.
  • According to SAMHSA, “while there is no one-size-fits-all solution for helping a family member who is drinking too much, using drugs, or dealing with a mental illness, research shows that family support can play a major role in helping a loved one with mental and substance use disorders.”
  • Therefore, we are seeking to fund creative supportive or empowering programs carried out by organizations made up of or supporting families of people affected by the overdose crisis.
• Basic Needs Support:
  • 250,000 is available for organizations that support individuals and families who are impacted by substance use/opioid use or at risk of an overdose by providing funding for “care packages,” such as bedding, furnishings, clothing, transportation (Uber, bus passes), food, legal fees, etc.

We anticipate making between two and six grants in each area described above. Grants will be for one year, with the possibility of a no-cost extension if agreed to by the Rhode Island Foundation and EOHHS.

Menthol-Related Health Equity Short-Term Project Application

The Rhode Island Department of Health Tobacco Control Program (RITCP) is offering three (3) short-term projects of up to $3,000 each to Rhode Island community/faith-based organizations. The organization(s) must be located or serving in Providence and have demonstrated proven engagement with communities affected by menthol-related health disparities (e.g., African-Immigrants and/or African Americans). Organizations must serve the special populations that reside or work in the Providence Metro area, and must have 501c3 status (e.g., nonprofit, faith-based, public libraries, youth development organizations, etc.). The organization(s) must aim to reduce access to menthol and other flavored tobacco/nicotine products in communities. Preference will be given to applications that document a capacity to implement tobacco/nicotine-free policies and educate on the harms of tobacco/nicotine use and tobacco industry practices through policy, environmental, system change strategies, data collection, improved enforcement, and public education. 

These short-term projects seek to help Providence community members who have been disproportionately affected by menthol products. Awardees would assist in educating the population on the tobacco industry’s marketing tactics, the harms of tobacco/nicotine use on the individual, those around them and their environment, and to offer tailored quit resources. RITCP and award recipients will collaborate with federal, state, and local partners to make tobacco/nicotinefree living the norm, focusing on communities that experience tobacco/nicotine-related disparities in health outcomes.

For over 25 years the Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation has provided funding and support to our communities. Our hope is that the investments we make, help to create a more equitable place to live and work and improve the quality of life for everyone in our communities.

Education & Literacy

Education is an essential foundation for prosperity and opportunity. We fund various types of educational support including early learning programs and initiatives, all levels of academic learning, workforce development, job training and more.

Economic Development

We fund activities and programs that work to improve the economic well-being and quality of life of our communities. Particularly those that focus on community development, diversification, creating and retaining jobs and building the local tax base.

Affordable Housing

Affordable Housing can improve the quality of life of residents leading to better health, adequate jobs, financial stability, security, and population diversity. We fund a wide variety of affordable housing initiatives including organizations and programs that provide credit counseling, homebuyer education, temporary and affordable housing solutions.

Critical Needs/Sustainability

This is a new area of focus added during the past year in response to the serious issues impacting our communities. The effects of Covid-19 and social injustice continue to be felt throughout our community and have negatively impacted many of our community organizations. We want to address these and other community impact issues as well as create the flexibility to address new critical needs and sustainability concerns that may arise.

Funding Ranges/Restrictions:

In an effort to assist as many qualified organizations as possible within our market areas, our Foundation awards grants of varying sizes depending on the specific project being funded. However, please note the following:

One-time Grants

• The average range for grants is up to $10,000.
• Successful applicants are limited to one grant per year.

Large Dollar Multi-Year Grants

• Our Foundation has a cap for the amount of multi-year grants issued annually
• Successful applicants are precluded from receiving additional grants during the multi-year funding period.

The Lattner Family Foundation, founded in 2006 is headquartered in Delray Beach, Florida, and is a family foundation with a successful history of charitable giving. We encourage board members to be actively involved in their communities and in the work for the Foundation. We also encourage family unity and mutual respect, while serving to educate board members in philanthropy, service, and stewardship.

Environmental Health Risk Assessment Program

Choose Safe Places for Early Care & Education Special Project Opportunity Application (CSPECE)

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is offering a special project opportunity of up to $4,950 each to eligible entities to support and expand upon Environmental Health Risk Assessment Program’s (EHRAP’s) efforts to engage with and educate early care and education providers on the impact environmental hazards have on public health. 

Background:

Through EHRAP’s Choose Safe Places for Early Care and Education (CSPECE) program, RIDOH aims to assist licensed child care providers and staff in taking steps to choose safe locations and protect children and staff from hazardous chemicals and contaminants at existing sites. Funded through the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR’s) Cooperative Agreement Program, CSPECE offers technical assistance and educational materials to licensed early care and education providers and the agencies and organizations that support this population. 

Opportunity and Eligibility:

RIDOH will award up to $4,950 to each special project opportunity recipient. Some organizations may request and receive less than the maximum special project opportunity amount.

About the Providence Shelter Foundation

Founded in 1838 by a visionary Quaker woman, The Providence Shelter Foundation has evolved from its original purpose of housing orphans of color and the children of domestic workers. Today, as Rhode Island’s oldest independent charity, it is a philanthropic foundation that supports organizations serving historically marginalized children of color and their families in Rhode Island.

About the Grant

Since 1838, The Providence Shelter Foundation has been dedicated to supporting the well-being and education of children of color in Rhode Island’s urban core communities. Our grants focus on programs that offer well-being, mental health support, educational advancement, and leadership opportunities, including funding initiatives in art exposure, summer camperships, music training, and various other programs designed to develop well-rounded youth.

Arts and Health Grant

Arts and Health Grants (AHG) support non-clinical art programs with health-related goals that take place in health-based or community spaces. The grant funds both non-clinical arts engagements that promote and facilitate individual health and art activities that address the social determinants of health to provide a community health benefit.

The Arts and Health Grant category is grounded by RISCA’s recognition that arts and culture contribute to a thriving community. The arts have the capacity to transform the lives of individuals and communities, contributing to health, well-being, and overall resilience. Arts and culture can facilitate the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects of individual healing, and that when applied to public health, promote healthy environments and policies in communities by fostering empathy, awareness, and social cohesion through shared narrative and aesthetic experiences.

The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. In 2014, the Foundation awarded $34.8 million in grants to organizations addressing the state’s most pressing issues and needs of diverse communities. Through leadership, fundraising and grantmaking activities, often in partnership with individuals and organizations, the Foundation is helping Rhode Island reach its true potential.

RIF: North Smithfield Ambulance & Rescue Association Fund Grant

The North Smithfield Ambulance and Rescue Association Fund was established in 2003 to support projects and activities that benefit the health and welfare of the citizens of North Smithfield.  Grants generally range from $800 to $2,500.

Project Grants in Education

Arts Education helps students discover, develop, and create a rich context for learning all while deepening engagement.

RISCA’s Project Grants in Education (PGE) program provides project-specific support to schools, non-profit organizations, arts educators, and teaching artists to engage students in rich and meaningful artistic experiences in dedicated learning environments. PGE projects must be experiential and focus on the exploration of art and the artistic process. PGE strives to build the capacity of local teaching artists and nonprofit organizations, while providing students with high-quality artistic learning experiences.

RISCA’s General Operating Support for Organizations Program (GOS-O), formerly called the Investments in Arts and Culture (IAC) Program, provides multi-year unrestricted operating support to arts and culture organizations and culturally specific organizations across Rhode Island that meaningfully engage and inspire their community through arts and culture programming. Organizations in this program make important contributions to the diversity and vitality of our communities, the economy of our state, the enrichment of all Rhode Islanders, and our quality of life.

Goals

The working group developed these goals for the new general operating support program, now called General Operating Support for Organizations (GOSO).

• Provide multi-year unrestricted operating support for arts and culture organizations throughout the state through a competitive grant program.
• Include organizations that are evaluated by peer review panels as being responsive and accountable to the cultural needs of their identified communities.
• Through extensive recruitment and a streamlined entrance process, includes organizations that better represent the diversity of the state along the following parameters:
  • Racial: only five BIPOC centered* organizations are in this program as of 2020. RISCA has set a goal of at least ten BIPOC centered organizations in the program by 2025.
  • Geographic: there are towns and communities that have no organizational representation in GOSO. RISCA has set a goal of including at least three organizations from three different, unrepresented towns or cities in the GOSO program by 2025.
    • Current unrepresented towns and cities include Barrington, Burrillville, Charlestown, Coventry, Cumberland, Foster, Glocester, Hopkinton, Johnston, Little Compton, Middletown, Narragansett, North Kingstown, North Providence, North Smithfield, Richmond, Smithfield, Tiverton, Warren, West Greenwich, and West Warwick.
• Provide a just and equitable distribution of funding that helps address the damage done by generations of institutional racism.
  • For this goal to be realized, additional funding consideration will be given to organizations that represent historically and/or continuously marginalized communities or constituencies in their mission, programming, staff leadership, and board.
  • In this specific context, historically and/or continuously marginalized communities may include but are not limited to BIPOC communities, such as African and African American, Arab, Asian and Asian American, Latinx, Middle Eastern, Native American and Indigenous, or Pacific Islander communities; people with disabilities; or others who can make a case for being historically and/or continuously marginalized.

Deadlines

Applications and application requirements will be slightly different for each budget cohort commensurate with the size and resources of different sized organizations.

• Budgets over $500,000: FY24 – Deadline is April 1, 2023.
• Budgets from $100,000 – $500,000: FY25 – Deadline is April 1, 2024.
• Budgets under $100,000: FY26 – Deadline is April 1, 2025.

In the event that the April 1 deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the revised deadline will be 11:59 PM on the next business day.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA)

Project Grants for Organizations

RISCA’s Project Grant for Organizations program provides grants of up to $3,000 in support of arts and culture projects that are relevant and meaningful to a Rhode Island community or communities. The Project Grant for Organizations (PGO) program is RISCA’s entry-level grant program for organizations.

RISCA defines a project as a discrete set of connected activities with a defined beginning and an end. Projects may be one-time events like a festival, show, or exhibition, or a defined series of events such as a roster of classes or series, or thematically connected concerts, productions or arts events.

Core to all funded programs is a connection and value to the community being engaged with by the public, fulfilling RISCA’s charge to facilitate a meaningful cultural life for all Rhode Island residents. Per our partnership agreement with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and our agency values around equity and access, programs that engage “underserved” communities are particularly suitable for PGOs. The NEA defines “underserved” communities as “ones in which individuals lack access to arts programs due to geography, economic conditions, ethnic background, or disability.” Rather than “underserved”, RISCA prefers to use the term “historically and/or continuously marginalized.” In either case, these definitions may include immigrant groups, BIPOC communities, rural populations, aging populations, people living in poverty, people experiencing homeless, people with disabilities, incarcerated populations, communities recovering from trauma or disaster, and military service members and veterans.

Asthma-Related Health Disparities Short Term Project Funding Opportunity

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) Asthma Control Program (RIACP) is offering short-term project funding opportunities of up to $4,999 each to a maximum of three (3) eligible entities that have a 501(c)(3) status and have demonstrated proven engagement with communities affected by asthma health disparities. One application per agency will be reviewed. The Asthma-Related Short-term Project award period will begin immediately after the organization is awarded and will end August 31, 2025.

Short-term Project activities must be completed by August 31, 2025. A final summary report, project deliverables, and project invoices are due within thirty (30) days of the project end date. RIACP will provide all awardees with a project summary and invoice template. The final report must be completed in its entirety prior to receiving reimbursement for project-related expenses.

Awardees would assist RIACP in community engagement practices to ensure wider adoption of the CDC’s EXHALE technical package. EXHALE represents a group of strategies to improve asthma control and reduce health care-related costs. RIACP and awardees will collaborate across sectors with national and local partners to ensure that all people living with asthma can achieve healthy lives.

Awardees will work with RIACP and its partners to engage with communities and implement at least one of the following strategies from the CDC’s EXHALE technical package:

E: Education on asthma self management

X: X-tinguishing smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke among people with asthma

H: Home visits for trigger reduction and asthma self-management education

A: Achievement of guidelines-based medical management

L: Linkages and coordination of care across settings

E: Environmental policies or best practices

Awardees can expect to use EXHALE as a guide to do one or more of the following:

• Engage diverse partners to promote and support social, economic and community change to increase asthma awareness and the availability of management services.
• Educate the public, community leaders, partners, and decision-makers on policy, systems, and environmental changes that can prevent and reduce asthma-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits.
• Implement culturally appropriate interventions tailored for community needs to prevent and reduce asthma-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits.
• Use research, surveillance, and evaluation to measure progress made in increasing asthma management awareness and reducing asthma symptoms including asthma-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits to inform public health action.

The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program offers grants to graduate students to conduct research on topics specific to sustainable agriculture under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Proposals should address issues of current or potential importance to Northeast farmers, agricultural researchers, and farm support professionals such as staff of NRCS, Cooperative Extension, and nonprofit organizations.

Projects should explore one or more of the sustainable agriculture themes of good stewardship, profitability, and quality of life for farmers and the farm community. We specifically seek projects that are consistent with our outcome statement, which says: Agriculture in the Northeast will be diversified and profitable, providing healthful products to its customers; it will be conducted by farmers who manage resources wisely, who are satisfied with their lifestyles, and have a positive influence on their communities and the environment.

Community-Driven Outreach for Hypertension Management and Diabetes Prevention

Short-Term Project Opportunity Memo and Application

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) Diabetes and Cardiovascular Health Program (RIDCH) invites applications from eligible organizations and agencies to apply for a Short-Term Project to create and implement products or events that aim to promote hypertension management and diabetes prevention in Providence communities. Products and events should also promote use of available preventive health services and community resources to address social determinant of health (SDOH) needs.

The funding period for this Short-Term Project will begin approximately April 15, 2025 through August 31, 2025.

A minimum of five (5) organizations will be awarded up to $4,999 each.

Scope of Work

The Rhode Island Department of Health Diabetes and Cardiovascular Health (RIDCH) Program aims to prevent and reduce death and disability due to diabetes, heart disease and stroke through evidence-based and evidence informed strategies. Community-based outreach is an effective strategy that supplements standard clinic care for hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes. Therefore, the goal of this Short-Term Project Opportunity is to increase the availability and presence of community messages and events for blood pressure management and diabetes prevention within the city of Providence. Messages and events should also promote use of available preventive health services and community resources to address social determinant of health (SDOH) needs.

During the 4.5-month program implementation period, recipients will:

• Develop and implement multi-cultural, multilingual community messages and events for blood pressure management and diabetes prevention within the city of Providence. To increase the effectiveness of community outreach efforts, recipients are encouraged to promote use of available preventive health services and community resources to address SDOH needs. Examples include:
  • rapid blood pressure and prediabetes screenings within community settings (e.g., barber shops, hair salons, faith-based organizations)
  • community conversations regarding the importance of annual physicals and well visits and booking an appointment with the care manager and/or CHW to navigate resources and systems to address SDOH (e.g., food insecurity, transportation, housing)
  • culturally and linguistically appropriate messaging to encourage blood pressure and prediabetes/diabetes screening (e.g., Know Your Numbers campaign, Diabetes Risk Test)
  • culturally and linguistically appropriate promotion of evidence-based lifestyle change programs such as National DPP, Vida Sana, and SMBP.
• Attend a mandatory evaluation training within the first month of the project period, and implement an evaluation plan to measure effectiveness and reach
• Meet monthly to touch-base with RIDOH Community Engagement Coordinator to discuss progress, challenges, etc.
• As needed or applicable, attend monthly Providence Community Advisory Network (Providence CAN) meetings to share products or messages for feedback and/or distribution support
• Produce a final summary report by September 15, 2025 (template to be provided)
• Attend the September 2025 Providence CAN meeting to provide a project completion report-out, inclusive of efforts for evaluation and sustainability

Environmental Health Risk Assessment Program Community Outreach, Education and & Assessment Mini-Grant

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is offering mini-grants of up to $4,950 each to eligible entities to support and expand upon Environmental Health Risk Assessment Program’s (EHRAP’s) efforts to engage with and educate communities on the impact environmental hazards have on public health. 

Through EHRAP, RIDOH aims to investigate the public health implications of hazardous chemicals in the environment, educate affected communities and stakeholders about these implications, and proactively manage risks by exploring innovative solutions. Funded through the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR’s) Cooperative Agreement Program, EHRAP evaluates contaminated sites and analyzes potential links between site contaminants and community health outcomes.

EHRAP also develops and implements the Choose Safe Places for Early Care and Education program, which supports practices to ensure early child care and education centers are located away from chemical hazards.

Examples of projects eligible for funding include

• Education for community members and residents about contaminated soil at a brownfield to be remediated and turned into a community garden
• Outreach materials and social media posts targeting Cape Verdean home gardeners about the harmful effects of chemicals in urban soil and using raised beds to avoid those risks
• Developing training for Spanish-speaking family-based daycare providers on transitioning to greener cleaning supplies
• Creating educational materials for private well owners on groundwater contamination from past activities and its impact on human health

Funding

RIDOH will award up to $4,950 to each mini-grantee, for a maximum of $15,000 in total funding between this grant opportunity and the Fishing & Fish Consumption Survey for Diverse Communities Mini-Grant Opportunity.  Some organizations may request and receive less than the maximum mini-grant amount.

Rhode Island Dental Foundation Fund Grants

The Rhode Island Dental Foundation Fund was established in 2023 by the Rhode Island Dental Foundation, an affiliate of the Rhode Island Dental Association. Grants from this program support community organizations focused on oral and dental health.

Applications must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Fund education and research programs designed to improve the art and science of dentistry in the State of Rhode Island.
• Award grants for dental public service projects in Rhode Island.
• Provide funding for programs to improve accessibility and availability of dental care for underserved citizens of the State of Rhode Island.
• Educate the Rhode Island public about oral health and the importance of oral health.
• Support Rhode Island oral health education.
• Support other Rhode Island charitable or educational projects related to oral health.
• Support free clinics or other projects involving Rhode Island Dental Association members that provide direct dental care to underserved populations.
• Provide scholarships for dental auxiliaries that are Rhode Island residents and plan to work in Rhode Island as a dental auxiliary for at least one year.

The Neighborhood Grants program supports resident-led, community-making efforts that:

• Foster social networks, enhance collaboration, and increase community engagement within a neighborhood, city, or town;
• Strengthen lasting relationships that endure over time and across experiences;
• Elevate shared public spaces as vital community anchors;
• Help identify goals, solve problems, or make group decisions; or
• Celebrate and share traditions that connect neighbors and communities, engage in volunteerism, and arts and cultural activities.

Projects may include a variety of community-building activities, from creating accessible public spaces and hosting neighborhood gatherings to improving urban green spaces and preserving cultural traditions.

Washington Trust Charitable Foundation

The Washington Trust Charitable Foundation provides grants to 501(c)(3) organizations within our market area, including Rhode Island, Massachusetts and southeastern Connecticut.

Charitable grants range widely in size. Multi-year grants are often considered for capital funding (to build or repair facilities), capital campaigns, or specific projects, with consideration given to:

Cox Charities funds organizations that focus on youth education, health services, military and conservation.

Community Grants

Cox Charities Community Grants range between $5,000 and $12,000 and are given each year to deserving non-profit organizations dedicated to STEAM education.

Cox is seeking applications for the 2025 Cox Community Grant Program. This grant supports non-profit organizations focused on:

• Youth innovation programs centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
• Conservation and sustainability initiatives.
• Inclusion.

Since 2001, Cox has invested nearly $7 million in grants and in-kind support to non-profit organizations providing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) enrichment programs to youth in our service areas of Connecticut, Ohio, and Rhode Island. Cox Charities is funded entirely, by Cox employees and business partners. 

Cox Charities Community Grants range between $5,000 and $12,000 and are given each year to deserving non-profit organizations dedicated to STEAM education.

Recipients will be selected by considering a number of factors, including the following criteria:

• How well the project aligns with the Cox Charities focus area: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math).
• The overall community impact of the program and a clear explanation of what makes this program unique.
• The ability to define clear metrics for success.

Funding

Cox plans to award nearly $140,000 in grants to nonprofits in our region. Proposals are reviewed by the Cox Charities Community Advisory Committee, comprised of area civic, business, community leaders and Cox employees.
