Best Housing Grants

The BECU Foundation's People Helping People Awards honor exceptional nonprofit work in communities served by BECU. Each year, BECU members can nominate organizations for grants up to $50,000. Eligible nonprofits must be active 501(c)(3) organizations with a direct impact in Idaho, Oregon, South Carolina, or Washington. This initiative highlights the importance of community service and encourages members to recognize local heroes making a difference.

The Katharine C. Pierce Trust Grant aims to enhance the lives of women in Massachusetts facing challenging circumstances. Focusing on health and human services, it supports nonprofit organizations providing essential services, including homecare and emergency assistance. The grant prioritizes program or capital requests, with a typical award of $10,000 for one year. Applications for direct service grants are due by May 1. Special consideration is given to initiatives benefiting elderly women.

The Tom F. Bunge Charitable Trust Grant supports organizations that assist homeless individuals, reflecting the legacy of its founder, Tom F. Bunge. Established in St. Joseph County, Indiana, the trust awards approximately 10 grants annually, with a preference for local organizations. To be eligible, applicants must be 501(c)(3) exempt organizations. The trust aims to address homelessness without geographical restrictions, although it focuses on Indiana and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Home4Good

The Delaware State Housing Authority (DSHA) and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh (FHLBank Pittsburgh) have established a partnership to provide grants to selected nonprofit organizations to support initiatives in Delaware that lead to stable housing for individuals and families who are homeless or determined to be at-risk of homelessness.

DSHA and FHLBank Pittsburgh have contributed a combined total of $1.23 million to the Home4Good grant program: $500,000 from DSHA and $730,000 from FHLBank Pittsburgh.

West Virginia Community Advancement and Development

West Virginia Community Advancement and Development works to encourage strong civic engagement through INFRASTRUCTURE, SUSTAINABILITY, COMPLIANCE, and RESILIENCY. WV CAD administers state and federal programs designed to improve the quality of life in West Virginia.

Community Service Block Grant

The Community Service Block Grant is a federal anti-poverty program administered by the Community Advancement and Development office of the WV Department of Economic Development. CSBG is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) and administered by the Office of Community Services ACF-OCS.

CSBG is not a competitive grant. Eligible applicants are Community Action Agencies that are designated by the Governor of West Virginia to administer the Community Services Block Grant. CSBG does not directly fund individuals but provides funding to Community Action Agencies throughout the state. The purpose in West Virginia is to aid a network of 15 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) in the reduction of poverty, revitalization of low-income communities, and to provide economic opportunities for low-income families.

Organizations which were officially designated as Community Action Agencies (CAAs) under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and were specifically designated by the 1981 CSBG Act as eligible entities to receive CSBG funds.

All recipients of CSBG funds submit community action plans and budgets detailing the programs, services, and activities to be conducted using CSBG funding.

Benefits of CSBG

WV's Community Action Agencies are independent non-profit organizations each providing a unique mix of community services. CSBG funding supports projects that:

• Lessen poverty in communities
• Address the needs of low-income individuals including the homeless, migrants and the elderly
• Provide services and activities addressing employment, education, better use of available income, housing, nutrition, emergency services and/or health

The Heart of the City Foundation Grant, managed by HEART OF THE CITY FOUNDATION INC, supports Christ-centered mission organizations locally and abroad. Since its inception in 1979, the foundation has aimed to address vital community needs, including human trafficking and homelessness, through generous legacy giving. It prioritizes grants that enable organizations to enhance their ministries, initiate new projects, and purchase necessary equipment, fostering a long-lasting impact in the communities they serve.

The Leo Goodwin Foundation Grant supports nonprofit organizations that enrich lives, inspire hope, and promote good health in the community. By providing financial contributions, the foundation focuses on areas such as children's services, education, the arts, health, and human services. Eligible organizations must be classified as 501(c)(3) charitable entities and demonstrate a strong mission and fiscal responsibility, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most. Grants are awarded year-round to foster community growth and well-being.

The Omnibus Eviction and Homelessness Prevention (OEHP) program, initiated by the State of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, aims to combat housing instability by consolidating critical funding streams for eviction defense and homelessness prevention. This program provides essential financial assistance, legal support, and resource navigation to households facing imminent eviction. By adopting a Housing First framework, OEHP ensures timely intervention to prevent homelessness, thereby stabilizing families and promoting safe, permanent housing solutions.

The Thornburg Foundation Grant supports organizations with strong leadership and a commitment to excellence in areas like human services, education, homelessness, and policy. The foundation aims to make a significant impact by promoting health, educational success, and equitable policies. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement and effective financial management. Organizations interested in funding should align their initiatives with the foundation's focus areas and demonstrate a history of making a difference.

Through our Community Investment Fund (CIF), Endeavor Health has awarded more than $38.5 million to 59 local partnerships dedicated to enhancing community health and wellbeing, advancing health equity and supporting local economic growth. Through the CIF, we will make meaningful and intentional investments through impact awards and capacity builder awards. These awards are intended to meaningfully advance the health of our community over time towards three bold aspirations through investments in five areas of focus.

The WSFS Foundation Grant aims to support nonprofit organizations focused on enhancing community investment, providing affordable housing, and promoting education and leadership development. The foundation emphasizes initiatives that are innovative and sustainable, fostering diversity and inclusion. Eligible organizations must align with the foundation's vision and demonstrate a commitment to non-discrimination. This grant encourages programs that improve the quality of life and economic well-being within the communities it serves.

NC Supportive Housing Development Program (SHDP)

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency offers several programs to help nonprofit organizations and local government entities build and rehabilitate emergency, transitional, and permanent housing for people who are experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of homelessness, have disabilities or other special needs.

The Supportive Housing Development Program (SHDP) aims to increase the supply of emergency, transitional and permanent supportive housing for special populations and low-income households.

Supportive Housing Development Program-Veterans (SHDP-Veterans)

New for the 2026 cycle, SHDP-Veterans financing is available for acquisition, rehabilitation, and/or new construction of emergency, transitional, or permanent housing serving veterans who are homeless or imminently at risk of homelessness.

The housing must serve households who earn below 50% of area median income. Rent and utilities cannot exceed 30% of the gross household income. 

The W. L. and Louise E. Seymour Foundation Grant provides financial support for initiatives benefiting handicapped and homeless children, as well as charitable organizations for the elderly in Texas. This grant aims to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations by funding essential services and resources. Organizations interested in applying should ensure their missions align with the foundation's focus areas to maximize their chances of receiving funding.

The St. Mary's Bank Charitable Foundation 1908 Funds Grants provide financial support to nonprofit organizations in New Hampshire, focusing on community development and services. Established to uphold St. Mary’s Bank's commitment to social responsibility, these grants, ranging from $500 to $5,000, aim to foster financial independence and address issues like homelessness, youth support, and civic engagement. The Foundation prioritizes projects that benefit local communities and promote long-term sustainability.

Homeless Crisis Response Program

The goal of the HCRP is to prevent individuals and families from experiencing homelessness and, when homelessness does occur, to provide for emergency shelter operations and to rapidly move persons from emergency shelter into permanent housing.

The HCRP is divided into two components: 1) emergency shelter operations; and 2) homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing activities. Funding is a formula-based model that promotes service coverage throughout the state.

Homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing activities are limited to households below 30% area median income (AMI). Both components are awarded on an allocation basis, assuming grantees meet performance standards.

Grant funds are awarded on a regional basis, requiring collaboration of all providers within the region to develop a single shelter diversion strategy, moving individual programs toward systems-level coordination. Funds are distributed by an allocation to ensure at least minimal access to assistance statewide.

The Schnitzer Foundation CommuniCare Grants aim to foster community-minded leaders among students in Oregon. This year-long program encourages student-directed groups to tackle community issues by raising funds, which are matched 10:1 by the Schnitzer CARE Foundation. Students engage in the grantmaking process, researching and evaluating local nonprofits to fund initiatives that align with their mission. By supporting educational community service, the program inspires the next generation to become active agents of change.

Targeted Holistic Resources to Invest in Vision, Empowerment, and Success (THRIVES) Grants

The purpose is to support institutions in addressing basic-needs insecurity among students. This grant is intended to further the work of the previously offered Ending Student Housing Insecurity (ESHI) grant in supporting students who face basic needs insecurities and may lack a stable path forward to degree completion.

Range and Average of Financial Assistance

Institutions may apply for grants in the amount required to implement the initiatives within the term of the grant. IBHE anticipates the typical award will be approximately $145,000, depending on the proposal's quality.

The Inasmuch Foundation Grant supports charitable initiatives in Central Oklahoma, focusing on areas such as education, human services, and journalism. Established in 1982 by philanthropist Edith Kinney Gaylord, the foundation emphasizes community engagement and transparency in funding. Organizations can apply for general operating support grants, with amounts ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, and are encouraged to pursue partnerships in priority areas, including education reform and workforce development.

The Imagine Learning Foundation's Signature Grant Program aims to enhance the well-being of learners by supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives. By bridging classroom and community efforts, it fosters healthier environments for youth, families, and educators. The program prioritizes funding for organizations addressing critical issues like chronic absenteeism and housing insecurity. In 2024, the foundation will allocate over $400,000 to impactful projects, furthering its mission to cultivate supportive learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.

The Sensata Foundation, established in 2017, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting community development and STEM education across the U.S. With a focus on improving access to STEM resources and empowering youth, the Foundation partners with nonprofits to address food insecurity, homelessness, and environmental sustainability. By fostering community partnerships and providing financial support, Sensata Foundation aims to inspire future leaders and enhance the quality of life for all, particularly in underserved areas.

About KHC

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) invests in affordable housing solutions by offering programs and services designed to develop, preserve, and sustain affordable housing throughout the state.

Created by the 1972 General Assembly, KHC is a self-supporting, public corporation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors. KHC is a quasi-government agency, which is administratively attached to the Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet, and a portion of KHC's funds are derived from the interest earned through the sale of tax-exempt mortgage revenue bonds. From these proceeds, KHC has made homeownership possible for more than 76​,000 Kentucky families.

Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG)

​The Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program is designed to identify sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons, as well as those at risk of homelessness, and provide the services necessary to help them quickly regain stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis and/or homelessness.

The ESG Program provides funds to:​

• Engage homeless individuals and families living on the street.​
• Improve the number and quality of emergency shelters for homeless individuals and families.
• Help operate these shelters.
• Provide essential services to shelter residents.
• Rapidly re-house homeless individuals and families.
• Prevent families and individuals from becoming homeless.

The program is also intended to lower the increase of homelessness through the funding of preventive programs and services.

The Direct Effect Awards, presented by the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), aim to support nonprofit organizations in Colorado that enhance affordable housing and community development. Eligible entities must align with CHFA's mission by promoting affordable home ownership, rental housing, and economic development. Priority is given to organizations that serve rural communities, special needs populations, and those innovating in construction and service delivery, ensuring housing stability and economic prosperity for all Coloradans.

The Cudahy Fund offers general community grants focusing on social services, health, education, environment, and arts for under-resourced populations in Metropolitan Chicago and Wisconsin. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. The fund aims to support initiatives that enhance community well-being, providing safety nets for marginalized groups and promoting access to quality education and cultural experiences. This fund does not support individual grants or projects outside its geographic focus.

The Father's Table Foundation Grant aims to glorify God by addressing the immediate and future needs of women and children globally. This selective grant process emphasizes building self-sufficiency and resilience among beneficiaries, focusing on proven partners capable of expanding their impact. The foundation supports a diverse range of projects, including employment assistance, education, humanitarian aid, and health care, ensuring that aid not only meets urgent needs but also fosters long-term sustainability.

The SpartanNash Foundation Grant supports nonprofit organizations focused on Hunger, Heroes, and Hope. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations located within a 30-mile radius of SpartanNash facilities. The Foundation ensures that every dollar raised directly benefits partner organizations, with a commitment to community impact. Grants are not available for ineligible entities, including those outside the radius or not aligned with the Foundation's mission. Since its inception in 2015, the Foundation has positively influenced local communities.

The Fund for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) offers General Assistance Grants to support veterans and their families in Texas. Eligible applicants include charitable organizations and local governments that provide essential services such as financial aid, housing support, and skill training. Grants are awarded to programs addressing veteran homelessness, business support, and legal assistance. Organizations must apply through the Grants Portal, and previous recipients are not eligible for renewal. This initiative aims to enhance the welfare of Texas veterans.

It offers emergency shelter, essential services, and rapid re-housing assistance, aiming to prevent homelessness and promote self-sustainability. Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, this program collaborates with local agencies to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the help they need to stabilize their housing situations and improve their quality of life.
