The Rodger H. Baker Scholarship, managed by the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, supports graduating seniors from Fauquier County Public Schools pursuing health careers at 2- or 4-year institutions. Financial need is considered, with preference given to nursing students, although all health disciplines are welcome. The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism

Prize Summary

The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established by the AACR in 2015 to raise awareness of the critical role that the media play in educating the public about cancer and cancer research.

Funded by a major bequest to the AACR from cancer research pioneer Dr. June L. Biedler, a scientist, mentor, and former member of the AACR Board of Directors, this prize showcases outstanding examples of cancer journalism and recognizes individual professional journalists who have produced accurate, informative, and compelling stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy.

The prize provides an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 and a commemorative award.

Prize Acceptance

Awardees will be able to accept the prize during the AACR Annual Meeting 2027 in Orlando, April 2-7, 2027.

It focuses on multi-channel educational strategies to address the evolving landscape of UC treatment. Key areas include educating on new oral therapies, transitioning to advanced therapies, and managing isolated proctitis. Organizations such as healthcare institutions and medical education companies are eligible to apply, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improving UC care.

Madeline Mellers Memorial Girls Golf Scholarship

Madeline started playing golf at a young age with her father, Ed Mellers, in Missouri. After moving to Colorado with her mother and stepfather, Chris and Ann Bush in 4th grade, she continued to play and started competing in CJGA events around the state. When she started as a freshman at Rye High School in 1990-91, there was no girls’ golf team at Rye High School so CHSAA said she could try out for the boys’ team, and she made it! Her junior year, Madeline along with her coach, Greg Bailey and Hollydot Professional, Prim Ivan, approached CHSAA again to see if Mad’s scores from Boys golf in fall could qualify her for the Girls State golf tournament the next spring, and CHSAA decided yes! She qualified and played in her 1st state tournament the next spring, placing 10th. In those days, the girls competed against girls from every size of high school in the state 1A to 6A.

During her Junior and Senior years, Madeline was also working with Dana Smith, a well known teaching professional from the Mike McGetrick Golf Academy in Denver. Dana took Madeline’s golf to the next level and is now graciously helping with her scholarship. He was chosen as the best teacher in Colorado by Golf digest and has several articles on golf published by Golf digest and Golf Illustrated. He is currently one of the staff at Trent Wearner Golf in Denver.

Her senior year, we were able to field a team made up of girls from various Southern Colorado small high schools and they played in girls’ season, 11 tournaments in all. Madeline was medalist in all 11 tournaments. She went on to become the Pueblo Ladies City Champion 3 times in 1994, 1995, and 1996. She was the youngest girl to win the Ladies championship at 17 years old!

Madeline was awarded a golf and academic scholarship to Stetson University, a division 1 school in Florida, where she attended and played golf for 4 years graduating in 1998. Denver University Law School was her next stop, and she graduated with her Juris Doctorate in 2002, passed the bar and started her law career with a private firm in Denver.

Tragically, we lost Madeline at 41 years old to colon cancer after a courageous 5-year battle. At the time of her death, she was a Senior Asst. Attorney General for the state of Colorado and very actively involved as a fundraiser for the Colon Cancer Alliance of Colorado. Madeline Ann Mellers played golf all of her life and was President of the Denver Businesswomen’s golf league.

This initiative supports research endeavors during the summer, providing stipends of $4,000 for up to five selected projects. Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens or authorized residents, pursuing research that addresses health disparities and the needs of underserved populations.

The AHA Collaborative Sciences Award aims to promote innovative research by pairing investigators from diverse disciplines to tackle cardiovascular issues. Funded by the American Heart Association, this award supports collaboration between established and early-career researchers. Projects must involve at least two co-principal investigators from different fields, and funding is set at $250,000 per year for three years, totaling $750,000. This initiative encourages novel ideas and interdisciplinary partnerships to enhance research outcomes.

The Community Practice Innovation Award by the Rheumatology Research Foundation aims to foster innovative ideas from the rheumatology community that enhance practice implementation and sustainability. Grants, up to $80,000 for one year, support projects in quality improvement, implementation, and pilot studies. Recipients are expected to share findings with the broader community through presentations and disseminate tools developed with the funding. This initiative emphasizes improving patient care through effective collaboration and innovative practices.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund's Next Gen Pregnancy Initiative Grants aim to enhance research on pregnancy outcomes, addressing issues such as preterm birth and maternal health. Focus areas include reducing pre-term birth rates and severe maternal morbidity. The Isabel Hampton Robb Scholarship, provided by Nurses Educational Funds Inc., supports doctoral candidates in nursing education, practice, research, and administration. Applicants must hold a current RN license and have two semesters of study remaining after the award notification. Preference is given to those majoring in nursing research or organizational study. With over a century of service, NEF is dedicated to advancing nursing leadership through scholarship assistance, fostering the next generation of nursing professionals.

The Diabetes Innovation Challenge Grant, hosted by the American Diabetes Association, invites emerging companies to propose innovative solutions addressing the daily challenges faced by individuals with diabetes. Participants present their ideas to a panel of experts, competing for the opportunity to implement their visions. The top five applicants are selected to showcase their concepts, while the top ten runners-up can display their pitches during the event, fostering collaboration and advancement in diabetes care.

The Girls on the Run Founder's Scholarship supports alumnae of the Girls on the Run of Central Illinois program, enabling them to pursue higher education at accredited community colleges, four-year universities, or vocational schools. This scholarship, provided by the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln, aims to empower young women by offering financial assistance as they embark on their educational journeys, fostering leadership and personal growth in their communities.

The Frontiers James Forstall Scholarship, established by the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln, aims to support African American students in Sangamon County who demonstrate significant financial need. This scholarship is available to both graduating high school seniors and current college students. By continuing the legacy of local banks that founded the Sangamon County Foundation in 1924, this initiative seeks to empower deserving individuals and promote educational opportunities within the community.

Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance Inc 

PHACE syndrome is a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by large segmental infantile hemangiomas of the face and scalp in association with congenital anomalies that may affect the posterior fossa of the brain, cerebral and cervical arteries, heart, and/or eyes. LUMBAR syndrome is the lower-body counterpart of PHACE, characterized by large segmental infantile hemangiomas of the lumbosacral, buttock or pelvic regions associated with urogenital, spinal, bony, anorectal, and/or renal abnormalities. Those affected experience a wide range of comorbidities with significant psychosocial impact. We invite proposals for clinical research that improves diagnostic approaches, enhances quality of life, and addresses key aspects of disease burden and management.

Applications may be submitted by either a single investigator or multiple investigators at multiple institutions. A total of $40,000 is available and may be awarded as one large-scale project or as multiple smaller awards, depending on the number and quality of applications received. Equal consideration will be given to projects in either of the two award formats with decisions to be based upon merit and available funds.

Focus

Research should focus on PHACE and/or LUMBAR syndromes. Priority will be given to investigators who have not previously served as the senior investigator on an R01 NIH grant or equivalent, and to studies that include multidisciplinary teams with active roles for early-career investigators. Proposals that meaningfully integrate patient perspectives are strongly encouraged.
