The Chicago Commitment: Advancing Leadership Grant aims to support diverse leaders from historically marginalized communities, fostering equity and inclusion in civic engagement. This initiative seeks to empower individuals who face systemic barriers, enabling them to influence decision-making and contribute to a more equitable Chicago. By funding leadership programs and individual leaders, the grant addresses urgent community needs while promoting collaboration among organizations to enhance their impact on societal change.

The Community Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Grants, administered by the Illinois Finance Authority, aims to deploy over $14 million in federal funds for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This initiative focuses on expanding access to EV charging in both urban and rural communities, particularly in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Eligible applicants include government, education, and nonprofit organizations, with a requirement for a 20% cost match. The program prioritizes projects enhancing community-based infrastructure for all Illinois residents.

On November 26, 1997, a small group of citizens with an abundance of enthusiasm embarked on a mission to secure the quality of life in our region now and forever. By yearend, they had a modest $1,050. Through commitment and vision, the Quincy Area Community Foundation expanded and grew to become the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri. 

Serving 12 counties on both sides of the Mississippi River, we operate as a bridge between our donors’ charitable visions and the nonprofit organizations that bring those visions to life. 

Communityworks Endowment Fund

Communities in Illinois, Missouri, and across the country face challenges in early childhood education, workforce development, and land use and protection. However, many lack the resources to address and advance them. In 2003, the Grand Victoria Foundation (GVF) launched the Communityworks initiative to strengthen Illinois Community Foundations’ ability to do so.

After securing three rounds of support from GVF and leading a two-year effort to identify challenges and opportunities in these three target areas, your Community Foundation established its Communityworks Endowment Fund, which is open to 501(c)(3) organizations or units of government that advances workforce development, childcare, and early childhood education in Adams, Brown, Hancock, and Pike Counties, IL.

Meanwhile, the Community Foundation continues to evaluate changing needs and opportunities in these critical focus areas in order to make strategic, meaningful grants.

CommunityWorks Fund Priorities

ISSUE AREA 1

Early Childhood Education Long-Term Vision:

• To have a large pool of educated providers who see themselves as professionals who take advantage of the ongoing opportunities to grow in their field.
• To educate parents on the benefits and value of choosing quality child care.
• Increase revenue streams for child care providers over and above parent fees and raise value / respect for child care profession.

Early Childhood Education Short-term Vision:

• Improve the quality and quantity of the region’s child care settings.

Goals:

• Encourage providers to maintain and improve the quality of their child care programs.
• Increase community awareness of child care's impact on our communities.
• Strengthen the relationship and involvement between parents, providers, and employers.
• Improve provider retention in the child care field.

ISSUE AREA 2

Workforce Development Long-Term Vision:

• Ensure current and future workers are prepared with the skills needed to fill a variety of existing, expanding, and new employment opportunities that provide livable wages and benefits to ensure workforce sustainability.

Workforce Development Short-term Vision:

• Improve essential and technical skills in the region.

Goals:

• Identify high-priority workforce needs and individuals to help fill them.
• Increase access to and participation in skills training to fulfill high-priority workforce needs.
• Reduce barriers for individuals to enter the workforce.
• Provide supports for individuals to successfully remain in the workforce.

The Educational Mentoring Program by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services aims to empower youth by fostering their academic and vocational skills through dedicated mentoring. This initiative focuses on breaking down barriers to education and employment while enhancing social support networks. By engaging with Education Coaches, youth receive personalized guidance tailored to their unique challenges, ultimately promoting their self-sufficiency and well-being. The program aspires to create pathways for educational achievement and positive youth development.

The Family Education & Support program, led by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, aims to enhance the well-being of families through educational initiatives. These programs focus on fostering healthy relationships, child development, and emotional support. Key services include a 16-week class cycle to promote positive family interactions, supervised family visits, and workshops aimed at preventing child abuse by teaching effective parenting skills. Ultimately, the program seeks to strengthen family bonds and community support.

The Legal Assistance for Nonprofits program by the Chicago Lawyers Committee provides essential legal services to nonprofits and small businesses aiming to reduce systemic inequalities in wealth and access to economic opportunities. This initiative offers support specifically to organizations that advance race equity and serve underserved communities, ultimately helping to close the racial wealth gap through education, legal support, and advocacy for economic development.

The Multidisciplinary Education and Evaluation Consortium (MPEEC) supports children suspected of maltreatment by providing comprehensive medical evaluations and coordination with law enforcement and social services. Funded by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, MPEEC addresses serious harm allegations in children under 36 months, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to care. Its services include expert consultations, medical reviews, and educational efforts, making it vital for community health and child welfare.

The Old National Bank Foundation provides sponsorships to enhance community initiatives in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Their mission focuses on social responsibility, supporting underrepresented groups, and aligning with the Community Reinvestment Act. Sponsorships cover events such as fundraisers and sporting events, emphasizing active engagement and measurable impact. The Foundation aims to improve quality of life through strategic partnerships and meaningful contributions.

The Sun Club Sustainability Grant, offered by Green Mountain Energy, empowers U.S.-based nonprofits to implement sustainability initiatives. Established in 2002, this grant supports diverse projects, including clean transportation, renewable energy, and resource conservation. Organizations must demonstrate three years of tax-exempt status and a commitment to community impact. Awards range from $50,000 to $400,000, focusing on measurable environmental, social, and financial benefits. Join us in fostering a greener future through innovative solutions and community engagement.

The IH: Project Grants - Multiplier by Illinois Humanities support nonprofit organizations in Illinois that foster collaboration through humanities projects. These grants, up to $10,000, prioritize initiatives engaging under-served communities and exploring overlooked histories. Successful applicants will work closely with partners and should focus on enhancing civic engagement through public humanities. The program encourages innovative approaches to discussions surrounding community issues, aiming to make the humanities accessible and relevant to all.

The Vision Grants by Illinois Humanities support nonprofit organizations in Illinois, focusing on planning, evaluation, and DEI initiatives. These grants aim to foster community engagement through workshops, research, and interactive programming. Organizations with an annual budget of $1 million or less are prioritized, and funds can be used for training and collaboration efforts. The initiative emphasizes equitable growth and aims to strengthen organizations' capacities to serve diverse communities.

The Old National Bank Foundation offers grants to nonprofit organizations for community impact initiatives across Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Focused on four key areas—Affordable Housing, Workforce Development, Economic Development, and Financial Empowerment—the foundation prioritizes programs that support underrepresented communities. Organizations must have 501(c)(3) status and align with the foundation’s funding priorities to qualify for grants, which can be applied for every two years.

The Impaired Driving Prevention Program in Illinois aims to enhance roadway safety by addressing alcohol and drug-related impaired driving. Grantees must be 501(c)(3) public charities or have fiscal sponsors, with expenses under $1 million per year. The grant aims to foster a vibrant arts ecosystem in Chicago, ensuring diverse artistic expressions in every neighborhood, and promotes the sustainability of emerging talent.

The Impact Fund provides recoverable grants to legal services nonprofits and small law firms working on social, environmental, and economic justice issues. With over $10 million awarded since 1992, the fund supports impactful litigation addressing systemic injustices. Grants range from $10,000 to $50,000 and prioritize cases directly involving affected communities. Recipients must repay the grant amount with interest if they recover fees or costs, ensuring sustainability for future funding.

The Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund Grant aims to support small nonprofits in Illinois by providing funding for programs in food, housing, and workforce development. Established in 2007, this initiative utilizes filing fees from nonprofits to sustain its efforts. The Spring 2024 Grant Cycle will focus on food and housing, while the Fall 2024 cycle will address food and economic development. Eligible organizations must meet specific criteria to ensure effective use of funds.

Carthage Community Improvement Fund

An anonymous donor stepped forward to establish a fund for Carthage.

“The fund is very general in scope, no restrictions on the type of Carthage-area benefit. The grants are not restricted to purely Carthage either and, in some cases, might go outside the boundaries of Carthage,” said the donor in a written statement to the Community Foundation.

This fund is a permanent endowment. Each year, a portion of the earnings from the fund is used to make grants and a portion is reinvested in the fund for continued growth, thus providing a permanent source of support for charitable causes in the community.

Grants Awarded

Grants will be awarded based on the recommendation of the donor advisor(s) with the approval of the Community Foundation board.

The 230 Outpatient Fitness Restoration Grant provides essential outpatient mental health services and fitness education for non-dangerous defendants adjudicated unfit to stand trial. This program focuses on community-based fitness restoration, which includes psychiatric and substance abuse treatment, aimed at reducing the number of individuals on waiting lists for inpatient services. With approximately 16 grants anticipated, the initiative supports both adults and juveniles, ensuring timely access to necessary treatments while upholding fairness and ethical standards in the judicial process.

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic (WGMC) aims to enhance community health by offering free healthcare and wellness services targeting families with behavioral health needs. Funded by the Illinois Division of Mental Health, the initiative supports staff salaries, equipment, and supplies necessary for providing essential services including primary care, dental services, and mental health support. This funding ensures comprehensive care, aiming to prevent serious health issues and improve overall well-being for underserved populations.

The Envisioning Justice Grants by Illinois Humanities support nonprofits using arts and humanities to foster justice and community engagement. With a focus on mass incarceration, these grants prioritize projects that are regional and partnership-oriented, benefiting vulnerable populations. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to applicants across Illinois, particularly from areas with significant incarceration rates. Accessibility and media funds are also offered to enhance project outreach and inclusivity.

The LFF: Nature-Based Climate Action Grant aims to support initiatives that leverage natural systems to combat climate change. By funding projects focused on tree planting, prairie restoration, and carbon sequestration, the program seeks to engage communities and enhance understanding of climate challenges. Ideal applicants include rural organizations working to create measurable environmental impacts while fostering collaboration and policy change. This grant represents an opportunity for organizations ready to take significant strides in addressing the climate crisis.

The Green Infrastructure Grant (IL) offers funding for projects aimed at reducing stormwater runoff and mitigating flooding in Illinois. Administered by the Illinois EPA, this grant supports best management practices (BMPs) that enhance natural water management systems. With grants ranging from $75,000 to $2.5 million, eligible applicants include individuals, nonprofits, and government entities. Projects focused on environmental justice areas may receive up to 85% funding, promoting sustainable practices statewide.
