IDNR Historic Sites Field Trip Grant

Grants are only available to teachers of grades prekindergarten through 12 in Illinois schools and are awarded for students to study some aspect of Illinois’ history. 

Funds are awarded on a reimbursement basis to the school. Reimbursement will only occur for transportation costs approved by the judging committee. No reimbursement is made to individuals.

Grants are not transferrable. They may not be transferred to another person, school or grade.

Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant

Purpose

Projects must emphasize student/youth involvement with planning, development and maintenance and increase the educational and wildlife habitat values of the site. The applicant must be prepared to maintain and commit resources to the project for at least five years. The project must be implemented on school grounds or another public place (for example, a park or nature center/forest preserve district land). Illinois Conservation Foundation sites and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) sites do not qualify for funding. Admission fees cannot be charged to obtain access to the site. Individual student projects will not be funded.

The Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant includes three options: Option One; Option Two; and Option Three.

Option Two

Option Two is for all other projects. Habitat projects may include, but not be limited to, the following activities:

• enhance or establish and maintain a schoolyard prairie plot,
• butterfly garden,
• rain garden,
• wetland,
• native tree arboretum,
• nesting platform or watering station;
• design and build a bird feeder or feeding station; or
• construct and install bat roosting boxes.

Vegetable gardens are not eligible for this grant.

This grant will pay for the purchase of simple gardening tools such as child- and adult-sized gloves, spades, shovels, rakes, trowels and hoes. Tool costs shall not account for more than 25% of the total project cost.

The Excellence in Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Award

The purpose of the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award is to recognize the contribution of a member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and made significant contributions to advance equitable health outcomes and reduce health disparities through research, which has enhanced the science and practice of nursing in the MNRS region.  

The FNBO Impact Grant Program aims to empower nonprofit organizations that eliminate barriers to economic and social opportunities. Focusing on Affordable Housing, Workforce Development, and Financial Literacy, this initiative supports projects that enhance community well-being and promote personal economic self-sufficiency. While the 2025 grant cycle is closed, interested applicants should check back in early 2026 for updates on future funding opportunities.

Inflation Reduction Act Urban & Community Forestry Program

To plan for, establish, manage and protect trees, forests, green spaces and related natural resources in and adjacent to cities and towns. The urban and community forestry program provides ecosystem services, social and economic benefits. It links these benefits to governmental, private and grassroots organizations and resources to improve the quality of life in these cities and towns.

Illinois entities needing capital improvements for utilities and public infrastructure can apply for Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) grants, with awards of US $1,000,000 for bondable projects. Focused on permanent utility installation or replacement, including water, electrical, sewer, and related roadway work, this program may benefit schools upgrading campus systems that support educational environments.

Working adults in Illinois pursuing higher education can receive $500 - $5,000 for tuition or related post-secondary costs through the Giving Branch Scholarship. Focused on adult and continuing education, the Giving Branch Foundation supports individuals age 25+ who meet employment, enrollment, and residency requirements in communities where Flat Branch has offices.

Illinois students enrolled in post-secondary trade, technical, or vocational programs related to the railway industry can receive US $5,000 scholarships to support their continuing education and training costs. Norfolk Southern Foundation provides funding for careers such as locomotive engineers, conductors, maintenance, welding, electrical technicians, and heavy equipment operators in eligible states including Illinois.

The MRC/SOT Young Investigator Award, presented by the Society of Toxicology, recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate research proposals at the MRC/SOT Spring meeting. Eligible students submit proposals alongside a reference letter. Awardees present their research at the Annual Meeting and receive funding to support their educational endeavors in toxicology, including travel to conferences and research-related expenses. This initiative promotes educational growth and scientific advancement in the field of toxicology.

The Prostate Cancer Research Support grant, offered by the Illinois Department of Public Health, provides funding for research aimed at improving outcomes for prostate cancer patients. It prioritizes projects from the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and Kellogg Cancer Care Center. Eligible applicants include government, nonprofit, for-profit, and educational organizations in Illinois. The grant supports research on prevention, treatment, and survivorship, with funds available for the period from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

The IL Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP): Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) aims to assist private and tribal landowners in protecting and restoring wetlands previously degraded by agricultural practices. This program offers various easement options, including permanent and 30-year easements, while covering costs associated with easement recording. Additionally, NRCS prioritizes applications based on the potential to enhance habitat for wildlife, including migratory birds, thereby contributing to biodiversity and ecological resilience.

It addresses threats to life and property from floods, fires, and windstorms without requiring a federal disaster declaration. Various recovery projects, led by eligible local sponsors, include debris removal, streambank protection, and establishing vegetative cover. The program is designed to be economically and environmentally sound, promoting sustainability in watershed management.
