The Limoges & Gilmore Scholarship Endowment Fund was endowed in 2024, and provides a scholarship to students with financial need from the Aurora or CFFRV service area who have demonstrated service and empathetic leadership within their community. The fund was created by the family who are long-term residents of the Aurora area who have provided service and leadership within the community. The family has provided service and board level positions to community service, church, school, and non-profit organizations.

Since 1932, The Italian-American Mutual Aid Society of Aurora has maintained a strong commitment to the Aurora community through the support of numerous civic projects.

Shirley M. Hurd Education Scholarship Fund

The Shirley M. Hurd Education Scholarship Fund was created upon receipt of a bequest from the estate of Shirley Miller Hurd.

The fund supports college scholarships for local students. In the awarding of these scholarships, preference is given to students attending Northwestern University.

Mr. Hurd organized and was president of the world famous Sealmaster Softball team. He and his wife traveled throughout the country with the team, which eventually achieved championship status. Mrs. Hurd was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, where she established a scholarship for students attending St. Peter Catholic School.

Susan Laz Vogus Scholarship Endowment Fund

This scholarship fund was established by Jerry, Mike, and Tim Vogus in honor and memory of their wife and mother, Susan Laz Vogus (1947-2023). The scholarship will be awarded annually to two eligible Kane County applicants per year and will prioritize students with financial need. 

Laz, as she was known to her friends, was an admired, beloved, and impactful activist, advocate, educator, leader, mother, and sister. She believed in the power of education and everyone having access to high-quality schools and a loving home where they could feel secure and supported. She created that for her family and was an outstanding teacher, whether serving students in inner-city Milwaukee or those pursuing a GED at the Illinois Youth Center. Later, she served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), helping children navigate the child welfare system, for which she was recognized as Illinois CASA Advocate of the Year in 2004.

Robin M. Hodgson Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

Mrs. Hodgson served on numerous local and national volunteer organizations, including the Family Counseling Service of Aurora, the Oswegoland Park & Recreation Foundation and the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. She was survived by her husband, John Hodgson, two daughters and five grandchildren.

Family and friends created a scholarship fund in her memory to help local students achieve their dreams of a higher education. This fund was endowed in 2024.

Richard J. & Irma E. Larson Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Richard J. and Irma E. Larson Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to help Aurora area high school graduates attend colleges and universities to further their education in the fields of law, teaching, Christian ministry and agriculture.

Richard, better known as Dick, and Irma are both graduates of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Dick received his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. Irma earned her Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University.

Irma has served on several community boards, including Child Welfare, the Aurora YWCA, P.E.O. Chapter DD, and The Mid-West Early American Pressed Glass Club. After retirement, she volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for nine years.

Ralph & Alice Kramp Scholarship Endowment Fund in Memory of Randy Kramp

The Ralph and Alice Kramp Scholarship Endowment Fund in Memory of Randy Kramp was created in 2010.

Randy Kramp, a lifelong Auroran, was forty years old when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After a three-year battle, he died in June of 2010 of complications from the treatment. Mr. Kramp joined Cub Scouts as soon as he reached the age of eligibility and that began a lifelong enjoyment and commitment to the values of scouting. After he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, he assumed the role of adult leadership as a Wood Badger. He remained active in scouting his entire life.

Scholarships from this fund are available to current or former Boy Scouts in the Fox Valley who are pursuing a higher education toward a career in the field of fire service or emergency medical service.

Mary Virginia Hughes and Wesley C. Hughes Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund was created upon receipt of bequests from the estates of Mary Virginia Hughes and Wesley C. Hughes.

Their parents, Wayne and Sadie Hughes, owned and operated a farm in Newark.

Mary Hughes lived and worked on the family farm her entire life and was a member of the Millbrook United Methodist Church.

It was important to both Mary and Wesley to use their legacies to support the education of local students.

Scholarships from the fund are available to students graduating from a high school located in Kendall County for attendance at an accredited college or university.

These awards are reserved for students pursuing a major in the field of agriculture.

Albert W. Medernach Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund, which was created upon the receipt of a bequest from the estate of Albert William Medernach, provides scholarships to students residing within the Community Foundation service area.

Albert Medernach (1941-2012) was born in Aurora, Illinois to John and Loretta Medernach. His father worked at the National Brush Company and his mother was a homemaker. They were blessed with twelve children.

Their son Albert attended St. Nicholas Catholic Grade School and was a graduate of Marmion Academy.

He served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 and was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Company for thirty years.

After retirement, he volunteered for Hesed House and St. Rita of Cascia Church, where he became affectionately known as “Mr. St. Rita.”

Mr. Medernach was a master gardener who looked forward to the springtime when he was able to resume the design of his flowerbeds and other plantings.

His devotion to family was of great importance to him as demonstrated by the special care he provided to his mother prior to her passing. He was a kind and thoughtful man who brightened the lives of others.

Albert Medernach will be remembered for generations to come for his generous provision for the educational futures of local students.

Michael David McGrath Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Michael David McGrath Scholarship Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory and celebrate the life of Michael David McGrath (1977-2003).

The fund, which was created in 2006, became an endowment in 2013.

Michael was a graduate of Downers Grove North High School and made his living repairing and refurbishing computers. He was an intelligent and inquisitive young man of unlimited potential.

As an encouragement to future generations, this scholarship is intended for students who possess both the ability and desire to increase their knowledge in a chosen field of study.

This scholarship also is designed to provide opportunities for students with limited financial resources to enhance their skills and affirm their self-worth.

Michael was a multi-talented young man who frequently benefited from the kindness of others. This scholarship is offered to recognize and perpetuate those qualities.

Kendall’s Kindness Scholarship Fund

The Kendall’s Kindness Scholarship Fund was created by the Maffia Family in loving memory of their daughter, sister, niece, and granddaughter Kendall Marie Maffia (6/12/2000-10/11/2021). This scholarship has been established to provide two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from either St. Charles North High School or St. Charles East High School. The Kendall’s Kindness Scholarship is intended for students who are planning to continue their education at a 4-year college and will major in an Arts-related degree.

Kendall’s family and friends want Kendall’s kind-hearted, gentle, loving, and passionate spirit to continue to impact others. The Kendall’s Kindness Scholarship Fund has been established to support young people who are interested in art, have a passion for their community, and exhibit the gentle spirit and kindness that Kendall showed others every day.

Kayla’s Hope Scholarship Fund was created by Hans, Ruthie and Hannah Lehmann of Saint Charles, IL to honor the life of their beautiful daughter and sister, Kayla Brooke Lehmann (April 5, 2003- April 7, 2018). Scholarships from the fund are awarded to graduates of St. Charles East High School, St. Charles North High School, Geneva High School and Batavia High School who will continue their education studying Music, Literature, psychiatry or psychology.

The Holden Endowment Fund was established in 1997 upon the transfer of three trusts administered by Merchants National Bank of Aurora in the name of the couple.

Helen Schlicht McGeachy & Arthur C. Schlicht Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund provides scholarships to students graduating from Aurora Central, Aurora Christian, East Aurora, Marmion Academy, Rosary or West Aurora High School.

Students entering the field of education, engineering, science, medicine or nursing are eligible to apply for these awards.

This fund was established by Arthur C. Schlicht (1936-2020) in memory of his mother Helen Schlicht McGeachy.

Helen McGeachy (1910-1994) was a graduate of East Aurora High School. An outstanding typist and secretary, she ultimately became secretary to the presidents of CA&E Railway and Walker Process Equipment of Aurora. Arthur Schlicht was vice-president/national sales manager at Walker Process Equipment. He earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

This fund was created in 1994 and established as an endowment in 1995.

Walter E. Deuchler Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund awards scholarships each year to outstanding graduates of East Aurora and West Aurora High Schools. The fund was created in 1968 and established as an endowment in 1989. A lifelong Auroran, Mr. Deuchler (1889-1978) founded Walter E. Deuchler Associates, Inc., an engineering firm in Aurora.  He also was city engineer of Aurora for sixteen years. Mr. Deuchler was a director of numerous civic organizations.  He served as a director of the Community Foundation for sixteen years and as a senior or emeritus director for three years prior to his death. As the Foundation’s scholarship chairman, Mr. Deuchler developed a strong interest in recognizing academically talented students who do not necessarily have financial need.

The scholarship provides support for a high school graduating senior who has struggled or is struggling with grief or mental health challenges and requires support to further their education, whatever school, institution, or ability level that person may have. It may be that a high schooler is challenged with mental wellness, has family or friends that have mental health issues, or has experienced a loss because of suicide. Todd’s family and friends recognize that it is a challenge to go on with the future in these situations.

The Conservation Foundation Environmental Scholarship Fund

In 2007, Ron Yenerich of Oswego created an environmental scholarship fund to encourage respect for the world future generations will inherit. Called The Conservation Foundation Environmental Scholarship Fund, it provides annual awards to local students pursuing careers in natural resource management (forestry, wildlife management, etc.) or other environmentally related fields of study. In the awarding of these scholarships, preference is given to candidates with a strong commitment to the preservation of the environment as evidenced through their work-related, volunteer or other community activities. Ron Yenerich is a graduate of Indiana University and served as an officer in the United States Army for five years.

The Aurora Kiwanis Club/William J. Downs Scholarship Fund

The Kiwanis Club of Aurora, Illinois created a fund in 1992 to memorialize a former club member, William J. Downs. Mr. Downs was the great grandson of Samuel McCarty, founder of the City of Aurora. He attended East Aurora High School and later attended Worsham’s College of Mortuary Science, becoming the third generation of his family to operate the Downs Funeral Home on Fox Street (now east Downer Place) in Aurora. Mr. Downs, a Marine veteran of WWII, was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.  He died in combat on December 6, 1950. Scholarships from the fund are available to students attending a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

The Aurora Kiwanis Club/G. William “Bill” Moore Scholarship Fund

The Kiwanis Club of Aurora created a scholarship fund in 1992 for gradates of Waubonsee Community College.  In 2012, the fund was renamed The Aurora Kiwanis Club/G. William “Bill” Moore Scholarship Fund in honor of Mr. Moore’s longtime membership with the Aurora Kiwanis Club. These scholarships are available to students attending Aurora University to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

This fund was established by the Kiwanis Club of Aurora in recognition of Dr. Harry Y. Greeley’s 60th anniversary as an active Kiwanian. Dr. Greeley was president of the Aurora Noon Kiwanis Club in 1950.  He was named Kiwanian of the Year and was a recipient of the God and Fellow Man award. The Kiwanis International Foundation honored him with the George F. Hixon Fellowship. Scholarships from this fund are available to students pursuing studies within the medical/healthcare field either in the vocational/technical area or at the college level of study.

People for Childcare Scholarship Endowment Fund

The purpose of this scholarship is to carry out the legacy of People for Childcare, Inc. by providing support to students preparing for careers that nurture the well-being, care, and development of children. People for Child Care (PCC) was incorporated in Aurora in 1977 to operate after-school group centers for children of working parents. This scholarship honors PCC’s commitment to the community for over 50 years in promoting appropriate childcare practices and services available to parents on a sliding fee basis.

Mel & Mildred Anliker And Dave Zierke Scholarship Endowment Fund

Mel Anliker (1934-1987) was owner of The Aurora Ice Company.  He was a successful businessman who liked sports, fishing and cards. The Mel & Mildred Anliker And Dave Zierke Scholarship Endowment Fund was created by Mildred Anliker (1935-2015) as a memorial to her husband and son. Dave Zierke (1960-1978) was a graduate of West Aurora High School, where he was involved in choir and drama.  He also participated in the Westminster Presbyterian Church Youth Group. Dave died in an automobile accident shortly after his high school graduation. This fund was endowed as a scholarship in 2024. Eligibility for this scholarship is reserved for students graduating from high schools located in the Community Foundation’s service area.

John W. Bauer Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund

This fund was created to honor Sandra Bauer Lay’s late husband, John W. Bauer, by providing academic support to future educators who have an involvement in and a love of sports. John taught mathematics and coached a variety of sports at West Aurora High School from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. During his last sixteen years at West, he was West Aurora’s Athletic Director.  As an educator, John was a strong believer in finding and developing a life balance between academics and athletics. Students must be pursuing a degree in education with a preference given to those studying to teach mathematics, physical education, computer science, and/or elementary education. In addition, students must indicate that they have been involved in athletics during their high school and college years at any level or of any type, including intramural sports.

John A. Brennecke Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund for graduate level medical students was created to administer a bequest from the estate of John A. Brennecke (1903-1967). Mr. Brennecke was secretary of the Alexander Lumber Company and served as an officer of several other companies in the Alexander Firm. In 1982, the Foundation received a bequest from his sister Margaret Brennecke for placement in the fund. Margaret Brennecke’s bequest was given in honor of their father Dr. Herman A. Brennecke, who is pictured here at the right.

Howard E. Charles, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund was created to administer a bequest from the estate of Howard E. Charles, Sr. as a memorial to his son, Howard E. Charles, Jr. The income earned by the fund provides scholarships to students pursuing a career in the field of health care.Howard E. Charles, Jr. (1928-1963) was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was the son of Howard E. Charles, Sr. and Elizabeth Charles. His family later moved to St. Charles, Illinois where his father became a partner in the Burger Drug Store on Main Street. He was a graduate of St. Charles High School and the University of Wyoming.  He then served in the United States Air Force for four years. Mr. Charles married and settled in Denver, Colorado, where he was a personnel director in the missile industry. He died in 1963 after a courageous battle with Hodgkin’s disease.
