Theresa Earenfight Scholarship

The purpose of the Theresa Earenfight Scholarship is to support undergrad or graduate students who are passionate about the intersection of social justice and animal welfare within a historical context. Applicants should be studying history, in particular how history intersects with animal activism, animal rights, animal liberation, and other related topics. Preference will be given to students with strong financial need, students of color and those from historically marginalized communities, and/or students who may face barriers to receiving other scholarships. This is a $10,000 annual scholarship renewable through the completion of the student’s degree, assuming the student continues to meet the eligibility criteria. The scholarship may be applied to tuition and fees, or other academic expenses payable to the college or university.

The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship

These $5,000 college scholarships are awarded annually to female-identifying students in the graduating senior class at Mercer Island High School (MIHS), Chief Sealth International High School (CSIHS), and Rainier Beach High School (RBHS). Students should demonstrate commitment to the values and goals embodied in the life and work of Dr. Stanley Ann Dunham, a 1960 Mercer Island High School graduate, anthropologist, and mother of the 44th President of the United States, Barack H. Obama, and Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng.

Robin V. Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund

Robin Virginia Jensen was born on January 9, 1986, in Corvallis, Oregon to Ronald and Deborah Jensen. She was an honor roll student at Crescent Valley High School, where she excelled in volleyball, track and field, and swimming. Robin worked as a lifeguard at Osborn Aquatic center, and in her free-time enjoyed riding her bike. Robin started taking classes at Oregon State University the summer after she graduated from Crescent Valley and was enrolled to begin full-time studies at OSU in the fall. She planned to pursue a degree in forensic science and dreamed of a career in criminal justice. She had been a cadet for three years at the Corvallis Police Department.

On the evening of August 10, 2004, Robin was riding her bicycle home from work and was struck by a car. She died the next day at age 18.

Robin’s mother, Debbie Jensen, helped organize the annual Ride of Silence in Robin’s memory. The event is a silent bike ride through Corvallis meant to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured by motorists. In 2006, Robin’s parents created this scholarship fund to further honor the memory of their daughter. The scholarship provides tuition for a Benton County high school student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at an institution of higher education with an emphasis in Forensic Science or Criminal Justice. It also benefits the City of Corvallis Police Cadet program and supports bicycle safety programs in Benton County.

This scholarship is renewable.

Walter H. Meyer — Garry L. White Memorial Scholarship

This $5,000 scholarship is available to non-traditional students working towards an undergraduate (must be over 24 years old) or graduate (must be over 30 years old) degree.

Loene Pooler Guthrie Scholarship Fund

The Loene P. Guthrie Scholarship fund benefits music students in Benton, Linn, and Lincoln counties who plan to engage in the teaching of piano, voice, and orchestral music.

This scholarship fund promotes the teaching of piano, voice and orchestral music by aiding music students in Benton, Linn, and Lincoln Counties who plan to engage in the teaching of piano, voice, and orchestral music. Students who will graduate from Linn, Benton, or Lincoln County high schools or graduates of those high schools currently studying music at an institution of higher learning may apply. The Linn-Benton Chapter of the Oregon Music Teachers Association reviews the applications and selects individuals to perform at an audition open to the public.

The Maria Gomez Dream Scholarship

Sponsored by the MG Dream Foundation, the Maria Gomez Dream Scholarship was established in memory of a friend and daughter who lost her battle with cancer in 2014. Maria cared about her community, giving her time and talents to make the world a better place. Through this scholarship, the MG Dream Foundation honors Maria by supporting college-bound youth in pursuit of higher education. Our vision is to set forth a ripple effect and create a positive generational change in students' lives.

Awarded to a student to encourage their continuation post high school. Can be used to continue their education at a two or four year public institution or complete vocational training. Financial need or other factors that might make a student at risk of not continuing their education are taken into consideration.

Marys River Lodge No 221 William E. McCoy III Scholarship

In 2021, Marys River Lodge No. 221 created another scholarship in honor of longtime lodge member William E. McCoy III. This scholarship is available to graduating seniors of Benton County high schools, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. It is meant to help them attend a public community college or four-year college or university. They must intend to major in hard or physical science.

For graduating high school seniors from Benton County pursuing careers in physical sciences or engineering. Students must enroll no later than fall term in a public community college, college, or university in Oregon.

Lillian & Paul Petri Music Study Fund

Lillian and Paul Petri taught music at OSU and via private instruction, and had profound involvement in supporting young musicians. Their influence continues today. Although the Petris had no children, they were very interested in supporting young people, and they bequeathed their entire estate to Benton Community Foundation to help young musicians.

Almost without exception, all of the Petri award winners have gone on to distinguished careers. The Lillian & Paul Petri Music Study Fund grants one of the most generous music scholarships offered in the United States. Since the Petri Award was first given in 1962, grants have gone to thirty-two top Oregon musicians. The first scholarship award made from the Lillian & Paul Petri Music Study Fund in 1962 to Miss Edith Kilbuck, a pianist and instructor of music at Lewis and Clark College and the University of Portland. She traveled to Vienna, Austria, to study under Professor Seidlhofer. When Miss Kilbuck was asked once what this award meant to her, she conveyed her “strong sense of gratitude” in the following statement:

“The Petri Award provided an opportunity for both focus and diversification in my education and professional career. After having practiced my profession several years as teacher, performer, and coach/accompanist, I recognized those areas in which I wanted to concentrate my efforts. To be free to do this additional work without the necessity of earning a living at the same time was a real privilege. Living in Vienna and traveling elsewhere in Europe provided such an immediate and first-hand experience of so much of our cultural heritage — general history, music history, German language and literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, etc. I feel I took a ‘giant step’ toward becoming truly educated during that year as recipient of the Petri Award.”

As expressed in his letter to the board written before his death, Dr. Petri’s vision was to provide scholarships to enable young Oregonian musicians to study music for a year in a foreign country. However, recognizing that circumstances change over the years, Dr. Petri gave BCF’s Board of Directors wide discretion in meeting his vision. Considering the increased cost of foreign travel since the fund was first establish, and in light of the many good music schools which have prospered in the United States since the mid-20th century, the Board has determined that the scholarship may be used for study domestically, as well as overseas.

The determination of whom shall be granted a scholarship from the Lillian & Paul Petri Music Study Fund is made on the basis of a musical performance competition judged by notable professionals in the field. BCF currently partners with Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA) to plan and facilitate the competition.

Knights of Pythias Scholarship Fund

In 1950, the membership roster for the Corvallis lodge of the Knights of Pythias, Valley Lodge No. 11 had more than 250 names, but membership declined over the years and the club subsequently disbanded. In 1992, as remaining members began discussions about how to distribute the assets of the lodge, Benton Community Foundation (BCF) emerged as a natural choice.

“We felt it would be best to keep the money in the community where our members lived and worked,” said Bob Bareinger, a member in the organization since 1943 and an officer since 1954. The lodge tried to give BCF the entirety of assets, including the deed to the building, but the Oregon Chapter that has jurisdiction over it stepped in and required the assets to be distributed differently. BCF received one-third of the lodge assets, which means that the Knights of Pythias will continue to serve the youth of Benton County in perpetuity by providing annual scholarships to graduates of Benton County high schools.

John Callahan Memorial Fund

John changed people’s lives wherever he went. From his time at Corvallis High School in the soccer program, to his time at Winco, to his co-workers at Hewlett-Packard – he knew no strangers and always had time for a friendly hello. He was a wonderful husband, son, and loving father and made everyone happier when he was around. The John Callahan Memorial Scholarship is a soccer scholarship established at the Benton Community Foundation by his family and friends to honor his legacy and as a way to continue helping youth in the Corvallis community.

The FY26 Tick-Borne Disease Research Program (TBDRP) Therapeutic/Diagnostic Research Award aims to foster innovative therapeutic and diagnostic research for Lyme disease and other tick-borne conditions. This award supports early-stage drug discovery and evaluation studies, as well as novel diagnostic methods that can be seamlessly implemented in clinical environments, ultimately enhancing patient care and quality of life.

Dr. Robert Palmer Scholarship Fund

To make awards for one or more students from Luna county.

The Edna Mae Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, aims to support women from rural communities in their pursuit of higher education at vocational community colleges or universities. This scholarship is open to applicants actively enrolled in any form of higher education, including undergraduate and vocational programs, with a special focus on assisting those in need. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors or currently enrolled students.

For Torrington High School graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in accounting or business administration/management at the university level and have had at least one successful high school semester of accounting.

The DoW Spinal Cord Injury Translational Research Award supports innovative research to transform promising spinal cord injury findings into clinical applications. It features an Early-Career Partnership Option, requiring at least one early-career principal investigator. Collaborations with SCI community partners are essential for providing guidance throughout the project. This funding opportunity aims to enhance the effectiveness of spinal cord injury interventions and improve patient outcomes.

The FY26 Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Clinical Translation Research Award funds innovative clinical research aimed at bridging the gap to larger clinical trials. It focuses on accelerating the application of new techniques and improving patient outcomes through effective diagnosis and rehabilitation strategies. Key features include an Early-Career Partnership Option for principal investigators and a requirement for community partner involvement, ensuring collaborative research that meets real-world needs.

The FY26 Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Clinical Trial Award supports innovative clinical trials aimed at significantly improving spinal cord injury treatment. This funding opportunity encourages collaboration by allowing two Principal Investigators, including an early-career investigator, to drive the research forward. Applicants must partner with at least two SCI community members, ensuring that the project is informed by lived experiences and community needs throughout its development and implementation.

The FY26 Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) supports innovative research aimed at enhancing patient care and quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injuries. This award encourages collaboration, allowing an Early-Career Partnership Option for two Principal Investigators, where one must be an early-career investigator. Focused on impactful research from basic to translational science, this opportunity is crucial for advancing SCI knowledge and interventions.

The FY26 Melanoma Research Program Focused Program Award for Rare Melanomas supports multidisciplinary research initiatives aimed at addressing critical questions in rare melanomas. This award requires collaboration between an Initiating Principal Investigator and up to two Partnering PIs, with the inclusion of a rare melanoma survivor or patient advocate in the project team. Approximately $5.6M is allocated to fund two awards, each capped at $2.8M, over a maximum performance period of four years.

The Melanoma Research Program Melanoma Academy Scholar Award supports early career investigators within seven years of their initial faculty appointment. This unique virtual academy fosters collaboration among established researchers and Scholars, focusing on research and career potential in melanoma. With approximately $1.54M allocated to fund two Scholar Awards, each capped at $0.77M, the maximum performance period is three years, and funding is expected to be available until September 30, 2032.

The FY26 Melanoma Research Program Survivorship Research Award aims to enhance the well-being of melanoma survivors through innovative research. This funding opportunity supports studies that prioritize quality of life, involving melanoma survivors or their families as collaborators. With approximately $2.04M available, two awards of up to $1.02M each will be granted for research over a maximum period of three years. Applications must be submitted by September 30, 2027, to be funded with FY26 resources.

The FY26 Melanoma Research Program Idea Award encourages innovative and high-risk research to advance melanoma treatment. With a budget of approximately $5.6M for 10 awards, each grant can fund up to $0.56M over a maximum of 2 years. The program aims to support projects that establish proof of principle and generate preliminary data for future funding opportunities. Notably, preliminary data is discouraged, and applicants must receive an invitation to submit a full application after the pre-application stage.

The FY26 Melanoma Research Program Team Science Award promotes collaborative, hypothesis-driven research to enhance melanoma care. This funding supports multidisciplinary teams of two to three Principal Investigators (PIs) to tackle complex challenges in melanoma. With approximately $18.9M available, the program aims to fund nine projects with a maximum of $2.1M per award over three years. Awards will be made by September 30, 2027, using FY26 funds that expire on September 30, 2032.

The FY26 Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) aims to translate promising preclinical findings into burn products for clinical use in challenging environments. This award supports the development of both tangible products, like medical devices, and knowledge products that enhance health outcomes. A new Mentorship Option encourages collaboration between experienced researchers and junior scientists, fostering the next generation of leaders in military burn care research.
