Scholarships

The Community Foundation of the North State manages many scholarship funds that are awarded to graduating high school seniors as well as students already in an undergraduate program. Some scholarships were started by families or individuals; others by businesses or organizations. All scholarships share one important focus: helping young people reach their educational goals.

Matt Solus Memorial Scholarship Fund

The scholarship supports high school or College of the Siskiyous students in Siskiyou County pursuing careers in fire science or law enforcement.

Matt Solus Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Matt Solus, the son of Fred & Elouise Solus of Yreka. Matt was a victim of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Although Matt was on a heart transplant list, he succumbed to the disease at the age of 22. Matt was a 1997 graduate of Yreka High School. The Solus Family were pioneers in Siskiyou County, having first moved there in 1850. Matt was a member of the Explorer Program with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department and had a strong interest in law enforcement and fire science. The scholarship supports students in Siskiyou County pursuing careers in fire science or law enforcement.

The Food and Farm Communications Fund's Wildseed Grants program supports grassroots organizations in the U.S. that aim to bring transformative change to food and agricultural systems. With grants ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 for one year, and up to $75,000 for two years, the program emphasizes strategic communications, community engagement, and racial equity. The Thomas J Nelson Sr Scholarship, offered by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, honors the legacy of Tom Nelson, a dedicated community member. This scholarship is available to graduating seniors or past graduates from Chelan, Douglas, or Okanogan counties, who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue higher education. Eligible students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 for four-year programs or 2.5 for community colleges and trade schools, reflecting Tom's commitment to educational support.

The American Geophysical Union Jerome M. The Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois Scholarship offers financial assistance for tuition to high school seniors and healthcare professionals in oncology/hematology within Central and Southern Illinois. The scholarship supports educational pursuits and professional development in these fields. Applications are accepted monthly, with a deadline for 2025 set for December 1st. Eligible candidates must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and reside in specific counties, ensuring support for local talent in healthcare.

H5N1 Risk to Swine Research Program

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has partnered with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) and the Pork Checkoff to fund a $4 million research program to enhance prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response capabilities for H5N1 influenza in the U.S. swine herd.

As part of SHIC’s strategic mission to respond to emerging disease threats, SHIC monitors disease outbreaks nationally and internationally for their potential risks to the U.S. swine herd. H5N1 influenza is an emerging disease identified as a priority for U.S. pork industry prevention and preparedness due to the growing number of diverse mammalian species susceptible to infection and the unprecedented 2024 H5N1 outbreak impacting U.S. dairy herds.

The Human Trafficking Youth Prevention Education (HTYPE) Demonstration Program aims to empower local education agencies (LEAs) by funding initiatives that equip school staff to identify and respond to human trafficking signs. The June Bacon-Bercey Scholarship in Atmospheric Sciences for Women supports women pursuing careers in atmospheric sciences and meteorology. Established in 1978 and reintroduced in 2021, it offers a $1,000 scholarship, mentorship opportunities, and networking through AccuWeather. Eligible applicants must identify as women and belong to underrepresented groups in STEM, including Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ individuals, and must be graduate or undergraduate students in relevant programs.

The GSCF Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education & Development Grants aims to prepare children in Ottawa and Saline Counties for kindergarten. Established by Mark and Jane Berkley, it supports organizations that address the educational and developmental needs of children aged 0-6, particularly those facing poverty or barriers to learning. Early education significantly enhances children's chances of academic success and future employment, making these grants vital for community growth and well-being.

The GSCF Kansas Health Foundation Fund supports public health initiatives in Saline County, KS, focusing on healthy lifestyles and preventative programs. Grants are available to 501(c)(3) nonprofits, educational institutions, government entities, and religious organizations. The fund seeks projects that enhance community health and well-being, offering seed money, capacity building, and capital improvements, while excluding healthcare for the ill and political initiatives. In just one application, our Common Scholarship Application provides students access to more than 150 scholarship opportunities with awards ranging from $1,000 to more than $5,000.

In 2025, San Diego Foundation awarded a record-breaking $5.5 million in scholarships to nearly 1,400 students.

Rita Ildsgaard Dunk Scholarship (Music/Piano)

This scholarship is for students graduating from high school or the equivalent who are residents of Henderson County and pursuing a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited education institution with a focus in music having preference given to piano. Recipient should be seeking a career in piano performance and a desire to instruct others in piano. 

The AHA Institutional Research Enhancement Award (AIREA) aims to bolster cardiovascular and brain health research at smaller educational institutions that lack significant NIH funding. With a budget of $100,000 annually over two years, the award supports various research areas, encourages student involvement, and strengthens institutional research environments. Eligible applicants include accredited U.S. non-profit institutions with specific funding limitations, ensuring that deserving projects receive vital support for advancing health-related research.

Cohen Cares Scholarship

We offer a scholarship for current Cohen employees participating in the Cohen Cares employee giving program and/or their dependents. Must be pursuing a college degree and/or a trade school certification.

Scholarships are non-renewable, but students may apply each year. Scholarship amounts are $2,500 for college and $500 for technical school. 

Applications are open year-round. After we receive all application requirements, we internally review applications and make decisions within two weeks of receipt. An email will be sent to the applicant to complete follow up requirements.

Scholarship payments are sent directly to the school.

Native Forward awards are allocated based on the financial aid information provided by the institution’s Financial Aid Office. Awards can vary, ranging from $100 to $30,000 per academic year.

Native Forward Scholars Fund members of federally and state-recognized Tribes as well as first and second-generation descendants. However, Native Forward Scholars Fund scholarship opportunities have different Tribal eligibility requirements and can be determined by submitting a Tribal Eligibility Certificate.

Katrin Lamon Fellowship

This opportunity is provided to honor the life and legacy of Katrin Lamon.

The purpose of the Katrin Lamon Scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students pursuing degrees full-time at an accredited institution in literature, communication, journalism, or other related fields.

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists Scholarship Fund, administered by the San Antonio Area Foundation, supports students pursuing degrees in Journalism or Communications. Eligible applicants include high school seniors and college students from specific Texas counties or those attending schools in San Antonio. The scholarship aims to foster educational opportunities and promote diversity in media, helping students achieve their career goals in the communications field.

Awarded to a graduating high school senior who resides in Lincoln County in South Dakota and is a member of the Lutheran faith. 

Armstrong County Community Foundation (The Community Foundation Serving the Heart of Western Pennsylvania)

In 1997 Merchants National Bank, an Armstrong County community bank, marked its 100th anniversary. The centennial celebration included a unique expression of gratitude to the community in the form of $100,000 to be used as a seed fund to initiate a community foundation for Armstrong County. The bank challenged the community to keep the principal balance of the endowed funds intact and spend only a portion of the interest earnings to ensure a lasting legacy.

The Dr. Samuel R. Black, Twila L. Black, and Samuel J. Black Medical Arts Scholarship Fund was established to honor the life and work of Dr. Samuel R. Black. The scholarship is available to graduates of Armstrong County High Schools including Lenape Vo-tech who wish to pursue a career in the Medical Arts. The scholarship criteria includes students who are interested in veterinary medicine.

The Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (R21 Clinical Trials Optional) aims to support exploratory studies focused on enhancing health outcomes within Native American populations. This initiative encourages research that addresses critical health disparities, tests new interventions, and develops culturally appropriate solutions to improve health and well-being. Applications are encouraged to include community-driven research, addressing unique sociopolitical and environmental challenges faced by these populations, ultimately aiming to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Evelyn Benton Nursing Scholarship

Evelyn Benton was a wonderful mother, friend and mentor. As a professional nurse, Evelyn had empathy, kindness and respect for her patients. She inspired and encouraged her colleagues and co-workers and was a role model for so many throughout her life. The Evelyn Benton Nursing Scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Evelyn by her family.
