Monarch Watch Free Milkweeds
Monarch Watch

Monarch Watch is a nonprofit educational outreach program based at the University of Kansas that focuses on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration.
Free Milkweeds for Restoration Projects
Free milkweeds are available for habitat restoration projects in the Eastern and Western breeding range of the monarch butterfly. Monarch Watch and our partner nurseries have distributed over 730,000 free milkweeds for monarch butterfly habitat restoration since the program began in 2015. Thank you to our funding sources and everyone who has worked so hard to plant and care for these milkweeds!
This program focuses on distributing free milkweed plugs for large-scale habitat restoration projects throughout the breeding range of the eastern monarch butterfly population (east of the Rocky Mountains) and the western population in California. The focus is on the main migration routes.

The U.S. Bank Foundation is committed to making Community Possible through Work, Home and Play. We advance this work through collaborative grant making to bring equitable and lasting change through our focus on sustainable, high-impact funding with 501c3 nonprofit partners. Established partners are annually invited to apply for a grant via an invitation from a Community Affairs Manager. New and emerging organizations bring balance to our grant making through our Letter of Interest (LOI) application, and we ensure funding is set aside each year to explore new opportunities.
Our Community Affairs and Foundation Team works closely with U.S. Bank regional leadership, Business Resource Groups and our National Community Advisory Committee to ensure that the prevailing needs of our communities are met in all communities we serve. Types of Funding Requests
- Operating grants: An operating grant is given to cover an organization’s day-to-day, ongoing expenses, such as salaries, utilities, office supplies and more. We consider operating support requests from organizations where the entire mission of the organization fits a Community Possible grant focus area.
- Program or project grants: A program or project grant is given to support a specific, connected set of activities, with a beginning and an end, explicit objectives and a predetermined cost. We consider highly effective and innovative programs that meet our Community Possible grant focus areas.
- Capital grants: A capital grant is given to finance fixed assets. The U.S. Bank Foundation considers a small number of requests for capital support from organizations that meet all other funding criteria, whose entire mission statement fits a Community Possible grant focus area, and with which the Foundation has a funding history. All organizations requesting capital funding must also have a U.S. Bank employee on the board of directors. U.S. Bank does not fund more than 1% of the non-endowment total capital campaign fundraising goal. All capital grant requests are reviewed and approved by the national U.S. Bank Foundation Board or by the U.S. Bank Foundation President.
Factors of Consideration
Because the Foundation receives funding requests in excess to the annual grant program budget, we must decline support to worthy organizations and programs. We may decline support to organizations we have previously supported to expand community engagements. Support should not be expected to continue in perpetuity and declination does not reflect a negative appraisal of the organization or the value of its programs and service.
The following factors are among those the foundation will consider:
- Innovation and/or differentiation in our focus areas of Work, Home and Play
- Programming and services that advance positive community engagement efforts
- Demonstrated outcomes and impact
- Service delivery to low-and moderate-income, women and people of color
- Diversity in the management and governing board of the organization
- The financial health of the organization
School-Based Mental Health Implementation Grant
School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network, Inc.
NOTE: The application deadline has been extended to December 1, 2023.
About School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network (SBHSN).
Utilizing a unique framework of funding systems offered by the Department of Health and Human Services, managed care organizations, health insurers, and private donors, SBHSN promotes a system of care model (Coaching Model℠) offering a mix of evidenced-based intervention, prevention, and care coordination services to children in grades K-12. The Coaching Model aims to expand quality mental healthcare access on public school campuses and improve children's social, emotional, behavioral, family, and wellness outcomes.
School-Based Mental Health Implementation Grant
In response to the growing number of students who need mental health counseling, the School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network (SBHSN) is accepting applications from Local Education Agencies (LEA), Public and Private Universities, State and local Colleges, Charter School Management Companies, Public Schools, Charter Schools, and Non-Profit Organizations (501c3) to implement and expand mental health program services on local school campuses. Grantees will receive direct funding and reimbursement to support the following activities:
- Expanding access to School-Based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
- Coordinating mental healthcare services with school administration and staff.
- Delivering mental healthcare services and coordinating academic-support activities to students with a history of attendance, behavior, and poor academic performance.
FUNDING
5-Years, renewable based on meeting performance goals 5-year award ceiling is $5,500,000.
McGowan Charitable Fund Grants

NOTE: No Letter of Inquiry (LOI) is required if you have received funding within the past three years and still meet our general rules of eligibility. (If funding from the McGowan Fund was received more than three years ago, you must go through the LOI process.)
What We Do
The McGowan Fund is the living legacy of William G. McGowan, an entrepreneur and change-maker. We give priority to programs that have demonstrated success, have measurable outcomes and plans for sustainability, and aim to end cycles of poverty and suffering.
Our active, strategic grant-making focuses on three areas: Education, with an emphasis on improving academic achievement, high school graduation rates, and college success; Human Services, with an emphasis on homelessness; and Healthcare & Medical Research, with an eye to prevention of cardiac disease and reversal of metabolic syndrome through intensive lifestyle management. We also support access to healthcare.
In our grant making, we focus on three areas
Education Initiatives- with an emphasis on improving academic achievement, high school graduation rates, and college success
Education makes all the difference. It is the most powerful point of departure for children struggling with poverty, community disruption, family stress, or failure. It’s the prerequisite for most long-lived careers that provide sustainable wages.
Through our grant-making in five geographic regions, the McGowan Fund focuses on innovative programs that show measurable improvement in addressing achievement gaps, improving teaching and learning, and reducing disparities among students.

- Charter, faith-based, and alternative schools
- Scholarships for high achieving students in private education.
Human Services Initiatives- with an emphasis on homelessness
The cycles of poverty and homelessness can seem intractable. Homelessness attenuates access to food, health, and work; this limited availability in turn hinders access to long-term housing. Recognizing the complexity and dependencies of the problem, the Fund focuses on projects that address basic human needs and stabilize individuals and families.
Areas of support in this initiative include:
- Stabilized Housing
- Food/Clothing Security
- Adult Education (e.g. ESL, Financial Literacy, GED Attainment)
- Homelessness Remediation/Prevention
Healthcare Initiatives- with an eye to providing access to families living without readily available care.
Lack of healthcare can be a barrier to work, education, and a family’s mobility out of poverty. We fund programs that seek to remove this barrier by providing quality care to those who may not have other care options.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Competition

21st Century Community Learning Centers (Title IV-B)
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) are funded by federal dollars under Title IV-B. The 21st CCLC programs are intended to create community learning centers that provide academic and enrichment opportunities for children outside of the regular school day. In order to qualify for 21st CCLC funds, grantees must meet the following absolute priority: The grant will primarily serve students who attend schools eligible for Title I Schoolwide programs. Title I Schoolwide designation typically means that at least 40% of the students qualify to receive free or reduced-cost meals.

This program is for elementary schools. 30 local PTAs will be selected, and each will be awarded $1250 in funding and two District/Council/Region (DCR) or SEPTA/Community PTAs will receive $5000.
For this specific program, your local or DCR/SEPTA/Community PTA must ...
- Host a hands-on Science Festival program and/or curate and distribute STEM kits utilizing National PTA’s provided Science Festival resources.
- Attempt to reach all underserved families in your community.
- Ensure the program activities allow students and families to engage together to enhance positive family engagement.
- For DCR/SEPTA/Community PTAs: Identify and engage at least four PTAs (or the equivalent thereof) to participate in the program or series of programs.
