Cancer Prevention in Maine

Cancer remains a leading cause of death in Maine, impacting thousands of Mainers each year. Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce cancer risk and prevention certain types of cancer, ultimately reducing the burden of the disease in our state.

To support cancer prevention efforts, Maine Cancer Foundation is now accepting applications for evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of cancer in Maine.

Cancer Prevention Focus Areas that will be considered include:

• Alcohol Use
• Environmental Factors that Impact Cancer (Arsenic, PFAs, Radon)
• HPV Vaccinations
• Obesity Prevention
• Sun Safety
• Tobacco Use and Prevention and/or Treatment

Proposals should utilize evidence-based practices in preventing cancer. Please be prepared to provide quantitative and/or qualitative data to support your proposed strategies throughout an application.

Grant Term & Request Amount

Applicants may request a 1- or 2-year grant. Request amounts up to $40,000 per year will be accepted. The maximum request over two years is $80,000. Please note, requests do not have to meet the maximum amount. Smaller, pilot projects are also encouraged.

The Wendell S. Doody Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports graduating seniors from Washburn District High School or Presque Isle High School. This scholarship aims to assist students pursuing technical education in trades such as plumbing, welding, and carpentry at community colleges in Maine. With a focus on students demonstrating academic promise, this fund is a tribute to Wendell S. Doody's legacy of hard work and community service.

Overview

The Submerged Lands Harbor Management and Access Grant (HMA) is administered by the Submerged Lands Program (SLP), a program of the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) within the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF). The SLP works to balance the public’s right to access state waters with demand for private and commercial use of those waters. The SLP administers the Submerged Lands Leasing Program which provides limited leases and easements that allow piers and other structures to be built on or over publicly owned submerged lands. Lease and easement revenues are used to support harbor planning and public access improvements through grants to municipalities and state agencies. Maine’s submerged lands include:

• Coastal waters:
  • All land from the mean low-water mark out to the three-mile territorial limit (including islands).
• Tidal Rivers:
  • All land below the mean low-water mark of tidal rivers upstream to the farthest natural reaches of the tides.
• Great Ponds:
  • All land below the natural low-water mark of ponds that are 10 or more acres in size in their natural state.
• Boundary Rivers:
  • Land lying between the banks of rivers that form Maine's border with Canada.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Funding

Please note: The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Funding was formerly known as the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), Transportation Enhancements, Quality Communities, and Safe Routes to School Funding programs.

General Information about the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Funding

• This program assists with funding sidewalks, pedestrian crossing improvements, off-road transportation- related trails, downtown transportation improvements, projects that address safety and/or ADA compliance concerns, etc.
• The goal of this program is to improve transportation and safety, encourage healthful activities, and promote economic development, while improving the livability and vitality of local communities
• MaineDOT annually allocates the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program about $4 million in federal funds for this statewide program. Each project has a 10% local match requirement.
• MaineDOT is currently accepting applications for projects to be constructed 3 years out. Communities seeking construction outside of this timeline would need to contact the Program Manager to discuss this request.

MaineDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Program

MaineDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Funding was previously known as the Transportation Alternatives (TAP), Transportation Enhancements (TE), Quality Communities (QC), and Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding programs. It is a federally-funded program to help communities improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, and to provide transportation options that relate to surface transportation under the eligible categories outlined under the FAST Act and prioritized by MaineDOT. These priorities include: 

• Safe Routes to School for non-drivers
• Pedestrian & Bicycle Facilities
• Development of Trails and Paths that Serve a Transportation Purpose

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program principally supports locally-initiated projects that improve the community transportation environment, economic vibrancy, safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, downtown revitalization initiatives and environmental mitigation. There is a required 10% non-federal share required.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

The MAC: Artist Project Grant supports individual Maine artists at various career stages, funding projects that enhance artistic skills or public engagement. Grants may cover creation costs, materials, exhibitions, and more, with a maximum award of $2,500. Eligibility includes being a practicing artist, a Maine resident, and at least 18 years old. Ineligible applicants include those applying for multiple grants in one cycle or those with expenses related to politics or specific religious groups.

The William Bingham 2nd Scholarship for Adult Learners Fund supports Maine's nontraditional students pursuing higher education. Established in 2017 to honor philanthropist William Bingham, this scholarship alleviates financial burdens for adult learners attending accredited colleges, universities, or training programs. Eligible applicants must be Maine residents and meet specific criteria, such as being over 25 or working full-time. The scholarship emphasizes the importance of preparation and commitment to education, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to advance their skills and knowledge.

The Keepers Preservation Education Award Scholarship, offered by the Maine Community Foundation, supports aspiring and established preservation professionals in the U.S. This program provides financial assistance for tuition, travel, and resources related to historic preservation studies. Eligible candidates include students and professionals in fields like architecture, history, and law. Note that applications will not be accepted in 2025, but interested individuals should check back in 2026 for updates.

The William J. Murtagh Scholarship for Graduate Historic Preservation Studies, offered by the Maine Community Foundation, supports graduate students in historic preservation and related fields. This scholarship covers tuition, travel, and study-related expenses, fostering the growth of preservation professionals in the U.S. Eligible applicants include students from various disciplines, ensuring a diverse pool of candidates. Awards may be renewable, providing ongoing support for dedicated students in this vital area of study.

The Fields Pond Foundation Grant aims to support community-based nature and land conservation initiatives that enhance public access and awareness. Grants typically range from $500 to $25,000, with a focus on projects that involve local residents in conservation efforts. The foundation prioritizes trailmaking, land acquisition, and educational programs, encouraging collaboration among organizations. It seeks to empower communities to connect with their environment while ensuring ecological integrity.

The MAC: Arts and Humanities Grant supports Maine organizations in showcasing the state's rich cultural narratives through projects that blend arts and humanities. Eligible applicants include nonprofit arts organizations with 501(c)(3) status and public schools applying via their districts. The grant covers project support for new or ongoing arts initiatives, with a required match of 1:1. Ineligible expenses include operational costs, fundraising, and equipment over $5,000.

The Adult Learner Scholarship provides financial assistance to nontraditional students in Maine pursuing higher education. Aimed at those over 25, working full-time, or independent, the scholarship supports various training paths, including degrees and certificates. Award amounts typically range from $1,000 to $2,500 per semester, based on individual need and study status. Recipients can renew for up to five years, allowing them to complete their educational goals. This scholarship particularly favors applicants without a prior Bachelor's degree.

The Adult Learner Scholarship - Short-Term Credential Award supports nontraditional students in Maine who seek to enhance their education and skills. Designed to alleviate financial burdens, it covers various training programs, including certificates and non-degree courses. With awards ranging from $200 to $1,200, applicants can apply for funding for programs lasting less than a semester. The scholarship encourages financial need assessment and preparation for successful educational pursuits.

The NE-AIPG Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATMGS) supports junior and senior undergraduate geology students in the NE Section, honoring Angelo Tagliacozzo's legacy. Established in 1986, the scholarship aims to encourage young geologists to pursue careers in geological sciences. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in accredited programs, on track for required credit hours, and can only receive the scholarship once. This initiative fosters early engagement with AIPG, emphasizing professional affiliation and support for the next generation of geologists.

The Maine Humanities Council offers Major Grants to support nonprofit organizations in Maine that engage the community through rich humanities programs. With funding between $1,001 and $7,500, these grants aim to foster deeper understanding and connections among diverse audiences. Projects may include exhibits, films, and discussions, emphasizing broad public outreach and community involvement. Emphasis is placed on proposals that demonstrate strong humanities content and clear project goals.

The Maine Humanities Council Mini Grants program provides funding of up to $2,000 to nonprofit organizations in Maine for humanities projects that foster community engagement and outreach. Applicants are encouraged to present clear project proposals, including detailed budgets and timelines. Priority is given to organizations led by or serving under-resourced communities. A 1:1 funding match is required. This initiative aims to enrich the humanities landscape in Maine through collaborative and inclusive programming.

The Douglas C. LaBrecque Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports students from the foster care system in Maine. This renewable scholarship is aimed at those pursuing education at local colleges, universities, trade schools, or other post-secondary programs. The Maine Community Foundation, founded in 1983, is committed to enhancing education and community welfare through strategic giving and investment, awarding over $3 million annually through various scholarship funds.

The Amos Bridge Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation, supports students pursuing degrees in Construction Engineering Technology at the University of Maine or similar programs. Founded in 1983, this fund honors Amos D. Bridge, a pioneer in fair labor practices in the construction industry. Each year, the Maine Community Foundation awards over $3 million in scholarships, emphasizing the importance of education for Maine residents across various institutions.

The Agnes Freyer Gibbs Scholarship Fund, established by the Maine Community Foundation in 2018, offers renewable financial support to Maine students pursuing journalism or related fields. Eligible applicants include graduating seniors from Maine high schools or home-schooled students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Selection is based on demonstrated interest in journalism, academic achievement, and financial need. Preference is given to female applicants, fostering diversity and support within the media landscape.

The Diminished Tree Species Grant Program focuses on restoring native tree species crucial for biodiversity and forest health. The Daniel Cardillo Charitable Fund, established in 1999 by the Maine Community Foundation, honors the spirit and passion of Dan Cardillo, a compassionate young man. This fund provides scholarships to Maine youth pursuing artistic, academic, athletic, and vocational passions outside traditional education. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, commitment to their goals, and compassion for others. The Maine Community Foundation has been a pillar of support since 1983, awarding over $3 million annually to foster education and community engagement.

The Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation, established in 1973, focuses on educational support for underserved populations in New England. It offers scholarships for employees of the Balfour Company and their families, as well as funding for organizations that provide educational services in Attleboro and surrounding areas. The Foundation prioritizes programs aimed at college readiness and success, particularly for first-generation and low-income students, and encourages multi-year funding requests to enhance nonprofit sustainability.

The Child Health Research Awards Program, funded by the Charles H. Hood Foundation, aims to support young investigators in pediatric research. It provides two-year grants of $200,000 to newly independent faculty, encouraging creativity and the transition to other funding sources. This initiative is pivotal in advancing children's health by fostering innovative research projects in New England, ultimately enhancing the well-being of children and families through early career support and funding opportunities.

The Downeast Feline Fund, established in 1995 by the Maine Community Foundation, supports Maine high school graduates pursuing veterinary medicine. With no separate application process, eligible students are considered through the Maine Veterinary Medical Association scholarships. Preference is given to those in their third or fourth year of study. This fund highlights the foundation's commitment to education and community support, contributing to the development of future veterinary professionals in Maine.

NCRC Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) - Housing Counseling Services

The Field Empowerment Fund (FEF) empowers NCRC network members to level up established service lines.

The Housing Counseling Services series within FEF supports HUD-approved housing counseling agencies in driving homeownership, such as through pre-purchase counseling. In addition, the program builds agency knowledge on heirs’ property challenges to better equip first-time and low-income homebuying households with the know-how to retain intergenerational wealth.

In doing so, FEF-HCS aims to help underserved families begin their homeownership journey, with an additional goal of ensuring foresight into the long-term future of their home purchase.

The FEF-HCS series is funded in partnership with Key Bank and HSBC, and targets communities within the Key Bank and HSBC branch footprints.

Through these partnerships, $2.5 million in Key Bank geographies and $1.5 million in HSBC geographies has been allocated for the subgrants for direct-to-client housing counseling services that will be awarded in three rounds in the FEF-HCS track.

Funding Support

Awardee agencies will receive subgrants to support their housing counseling services to clients.

Knowledge Building

Awardee agencies will attend a training session on heirs’ property challenges and best practices, hosted by NCRC National Training Academy. Bolstering counselor knowledge on this topic will ensure that your agency is not only serving clients in their personal wealth-building journey now, but also helping them preserve that wealth in generations to come.

The Nourishment Focus Area Grant by the Quimby Family Foundation supports Maine-based nonprofits that promote human wholeness through community engagement and education in regional, plant-based food choices. Grants range from $2,500 to $25,000, with a focus on empowering people to choose healthier, sustainable food options. The foundation prioritizes organizations demonstrating community-rooted values and aims to address disparities in access to nutritious foods.
