We want to educate those who agree. Opportunities abound in the media world, but at NYU Journalism, the opportunity to do compelling work that informs, engages, and matters to the societies in which we live drives our faculty, motivates our students, and shapes our approach.

Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award

Matthew Power was an award-winning journalist who reported empathetically on the human condition. He died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

About the Award

The Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award is a grant of $15,000 to support the work of a promising early-career nonfiction journalist on a story that uncovers truths about the human condition.

Offered for the first time in 2015, the Award has been endowed by individuals and organizations touched by the life and work of Matthew Power, a wide-roving and award-winning journalist who sought to live and share the experience of the individuals and places on which he was reporting. Power, a longtime friend of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, died in March 2014, while on assignment in Uganda.

The award proceeds from the recognition that many important stories need to be reported from afar, and that publications do not always have the resources to send a journalist where the story is. The money need not be used exclusively for travel, but we expect that most successful applications will include such expenses. A panel of NYU journalism professors, outside writers, and editors will review the proposals. Finalists will be asked to take part in an interview online.

The judges will be interested in perpetuating Power’s legacy, as his former editor Roger Hodge put it, of “strong, character-driven narratives with detailed scenes and lyrical description.” Power was always open to the absurdity that often attends politics and international affairs; he was always searching, as he put it, for “the human truth beneath the sorry facts.” Power’s ultimate ambition, he added, was literary beauty.

That said, judges will be looking for a journalist as singular in his or her own approach as Power was in his. In addition to longform print projects, we will consider audio projects involving substantial reporting and running over 20 minutes in length. The award will not fund proposals to report on armed conflicts where journalists are already imperiled, nor projects that are mainly investigatory. The winner will normally receive visiting scholar privileges at NYU, including library access.

Ocean State Media Scholarship

The scholarship offers awards to residents of Ocean State Media’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media.

Scholarship Award Details

Established by Rhode Island PBS in 2017, the Ocean State Media Scholarship offers awards to residents of the station’s demographic market area who demonstrate promise of a successful career in the fields of journalism and/or media. Awards of up to $15,000 will be awarded annually and are renewable for an additional three years.

Columbus Matrix Foundation Scholarship

Since the early days of print journalism, The Association for Women in Communications has evolved to become the overarching professional organization to unite communicators across a vast spectrum of disciplines-from print and broadcast journalism, to graphic design, photography, public relations, advertising, marketing, new media, and much more.

Award Amount:

• Up to four scholarships of $10,000 payable over four years at $2,500 per academic year.

Alpha Chapter Controlling Corp. of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship awards to deserving high school students who plan to attend an accredited college or university and undertake studies in marketing, communications, journalism, or advertising.

Kiwanis Club of Marietta members participate in service projects, hold fundraisers, and change children’s lives in our community. In addition, club members contribute to Kiwanis International initiatives helping clubs around the world assist children with education, basic needs, and medical care.

These scholarships are made possible through our club's Flag Project, which places over 1,300 American flags in front of homes and businesses five times each year.

Bill “Scoop” Kinney Journalism Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Marietta Kiwanis Foundation in honor of Mr. Bill Kinney, the Senior Associate Editor of the Marietta Daily Journal. 

Selection emphasis will be placed on academic performance with priority given to current or former Cobb or Marietta.

The Congressman Mark Foley Scholarship for Journalism Education Fund

Must be enrolled in a program with a major in Journalism.

Alabama journalism students seeking funding for college can apply for Stark Community Foundation’s Velma Shotwell Griffin Memorial Scholarship, which awards more than US $500 for accredited degree programs. Graduates of Conotton Valley or Carrollton High Schools studying journalism, writing, media, music, history, or related fields who demonstrate financial need may be eligible.

American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students in journalism, literature, communication, or related fields at accredited U.S. institutions can receive need-based support for full-time study, including those in Alabama. Grants from Native Forward Scholars Fund help eligible Tribal members and verified descendants cover educational costs, with awards determined using institutional financial aid information.

North America–headquartered 501(c)(3) Seventh-day Adventist publications, universities, academies, and independent media organizations can seek funding for journalism projects that advance Adventist-focused reporting and storytelling. Versacare provides US $5,000 - US $15,000 for investigative work, major stories, training, technology, travel, and related activities; Alabama-based journalism nonprofits meeting these criteria may be eligible.

Journalism organizations and freelance reporters producing U.S. health care affordability stories can apply for a US $20,000 Television and Audio Journalism Award, including applicants based in Alabama. With a mission to improve health care affordability and access, the National Institute for Health Care Management honors impactful television, audio, and streaming coverage that informs health plans, policymakers, and consumers.

Local journalism outlets producing U.S. health care affordability coverage in Alabama can apply for the NIHCM Foundation Local Media Award, which honors excellence in local health reporting. Grants from the National Institute for Health Care Management provide a US $15,000 prize for impactful stories or series that inform health plans, policymakers, and health care stakeholders.

Journalists and news organizations producing investigative or general reporting on U.S. health care affordability and access can apply for the NIHCM Foundation Investigative and General Reporting Award, which offers a US $20,000 prize. Grants from The National Institute for Health Care Management help Alabama and other U.S. journalism outlets highlight costs, access, and quality issues in health care.

Journalists and specialty publications covering U.S. health care affordability can apply for the NIHCM Foundation Trade Journalism Award, which provides a US $15,000 prize for outstanding reporting. Alabama-based trade journalists whose 2025 stories inform health plans, policymakers, or health care stakeholders about costs, access, or quality may be competitive.

Journalists and media professionals in Alabama covering forestry and natural resources can receive recognition and support through the Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award, which offers more than US $500 plus convention and travel benefits. Society of American Foresters accepts one nomination per eligible SAF state or regional unit for impactful print, television, or radio work.

Students in Alabama with a demonstrated interest in journalism and samples of journalistic work can seek scholarship support for higher education, which may include journalism studies. The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region offers the Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship through its universal application, supporting academic scholarship programs in journalism-related fields.

High school seniors interested in journalism with financial need can receive scholarship support for higher education from the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. With a mission to empower generous people with meaningful giving opportunities, the foundation provides the Michael Hurewitz Scholarship for a Greater Capital Region student pursuing academic and journalism-related studies.

Journalists producing investigative or social-justice reporting, including those covering Alabama, can apply for monthly Sidney Awards honoring excellence in journalism. Focused on journalism in service of the common good, the Sidney Hillman Foundation provides a US $1,000 honorarium and certificate for outstanding work in any medium published or aired in the prior month.

Alabama journalists working on in-depth reporting about technology’s impact on society can access funding through Omidyar Network Fund to cover major project costs. U.S.-based freelancers, staff reporters, editors, and teams may receive US $5,000 - US $25,000 for travel, research, fact-checking, data access, multimedia, and reporting time on AI, tech policy, industry investigations, and workplace or family impacts.

Alabama K-12 schools, districts, libraries, museums, community centers, bookstores, and afterschool organizations serving at least 500 students and/or educators can apply for Pulitzer Center’s K-12 Education Grant Program on Global Health, offering up to US $1,500. Projects must use Pulitzer Center-supported global health journalism to deepen understanding and inspire community health action.

Alabama journalism students can access funding through Maine Community Foundation’s Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship to support post-secondary or graduate education in journalism or closely related media fields. Awards range from US $1,000 - US $60,000 and are renewable, but applicants must be graduates of Maine high schools or home-schooled in a Maine community.

Students pursuing creative writing or journalism from Chelan or Douglas County can receive scholarship support for high school or higher education studies. Grants from Community Foundation of North Central Washington help eligible Alabama journalism seekers see an example of funding that supports original writing, with requirements including a minimum 3.0 GPA and a short, original writing sample.

Students pursuing journalism or communications degrees in the U.S. can receive scholarship support for tuition and educational expenses through the Express-News Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund. With a mission to build community, San Antonio Area Foundation provides renewable funding for full-time associate, bachelor’s, or graduate students, which may benefit Alabama residents meeting the residency and field-of-study criteria.

Muslim undergraduate and graduate students in journalism, media studies, or related writing fields in the U.S., including Alabama, can receive US $3,000 - US $5,000 for their studies and professional development. Islamic Scholarship Fund provides American Muslim media scholars with funding, mentorship, and career support to strengthen representation and improve narratives about Muslims.

Journalism students pursuing junior, senior, graduate, or PhD studies who need scholarship support and are committed to a journalism career may be eligible, including those from Alabama. Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s Robert Sr. and Mary Churchwell Scholarship Fund supports academic costs for aspiring journalists who meet GPA, financial need, essay, and work-sample requirements, with potential renewal for one year.

The U.S. Hillman Prize for Newspaper Journalism, awarded by the Sidney Hillman Foundation, recognizes outstanding journalism that serves the common good. Open to global journalists, entries must be published in English and accessible to U.S. audiences within the last year. Winners receive a $5,000 honorarium and a certificate at a New York City ceremony. The foundation also honors work related to racial and economic justice through additional awards. Entries should focus on impactful stories.

Grants for Research About Urban Communication Issues

Since our launch in 2005, the Urban Communication Foundation has provided awards and grants to dozens of distinguished scholars, researchers, and journalists to recognize and support provocative work that contributes in significant ways to the discourse around urban communication issues.

While most of our recipients hail from academia and journalism, we also encourage submissions from other practitioners whose work will lend new insights into the discipline, raise broader awareness of related socio-political, economic, and cultural concerns, or influence public policy.

Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication has partnered with the Urban Communication Foundation to create the Gene Burd Grant for Research in Urban Journalism Studies. The purpose of this annual grant is to stimulate research that explains, enlightens, inspires, and improves the practice and study of journalism and communication in order to advance our understanding of journalism in urban environments.

The Baugh Foundation supports progressive, inclusive, nonprofit organizations that reflect the love of Christ by providing assistance to those in need, enriching the lives of children and youth, keeping faith communities informed and engaged, and guarding the wall of separation between church and state.We welcome applications from progressive, faith-based organizations. At this time, the vast majority of our funding goes to progressive Baptist organizations or initiatives, and organizations that work to guard the separation of church and state. We believe that a free church in a free state is dependent upon a functioning democracy.Funding Priorities:
