The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD)

The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) facilitates communication and collaboration between the Governor’s Office, the other Cabinet agencies, and Indian tribes, nations, pueblos and tribal citizens on programs and issues affecting Native Americans in New Mexico. IAD is uniquely positioned to be a catalyst for state-tribal relations. Originally created in 1953 as the Office of Indian Affairs to assist the state’s Commission on Indian Affairs, IAD is now one of the nation’s few state cabinet-level Indian affairs departments. New Mexico has over 263,315 Native Americans, comprising 12.4% of the state’s entire population.

IAD has statutory authority to:

• Investigate, study, consider and act upon the entire subject of Indian conditions and relations within New Mexico, including problems of health, economy and education and the effect of local, state and federal legislative, executive and judicial actions;
• Assist in setting the policy, and act as the clearinghouse, for all state programs affecting the Indian people of New Mexico. 

Financial Literacy for New Mexico Tribal Citizens & Communities

The purpose of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to leverage existing curriculum ensuring it is adaptable for both youth and adults, can be accessed electronically and in-person, and, at a minimum, includes culturally appropriate financial and investor education, addresses personal finance topics such as responsible use of a credit card, saving & savings goals avoiding predatory lenders, understanding banking, car buying tips, safeguarding against identity theft and basic investing skills. Open to non profits, private sectors, institutions, etc.

Friends of NRA

Friends of NRA is the National Rifle Association’s premier fundraising program, supporting the future of shooting sports. Since day one, Friends of NRA has been a 100% grassroots effort fueled by a united front to secure the Second Amendment and raise money for the shooting sports.

Committee volunteers are appointed to State Fund Committees to make recommendations for local grant funding in areas such as youth education, women-focused clinics, law enforcement training, hunter safety, range improvement, firearms and marksmanship training and safety. Recognizing the impact American youth has on the future of the shooting sports, State Fund Committees frequently recommend grants for youth programs, allocating the most significant portion of monies to this vital area.

Grant awards fund activities and support programs in the United States to promote firearms and hunting safety, to enhance marksmanship skills of those in the shooting sports, and to educate the public about firearms in their historic, technological and artistic context.

Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program - New Mexico

The Friends of NRA State Fund Grant Program provides supplies, equipment, and financial support to a variety of qualified groups and programs at the local level; geared towards youth, women, law enforcement, veterans, the disabled, and the general public, including:

Frankie D. & Russell E. Clemons Endowment Fund Scholarships

Healthcare providers (nurses, respiratory therapists, medical technicians, etc.) at DACC and NMSU.

The Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship, awarded by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, supports first and second-year medical students conducting research over 2 to 12 months. With a total funding of $7,000, students can receive reimbursement for travel expenses up to $1,000 for presenting their findings at national conferences. Eligibility requires enrollment in schools with active AΩA chapters, while those taking a year off for research or holding a PhD are ineligible.

The Native American Affairs program for Fiscal Year 2025 aims to provide crucial funding for drought relief projects that support federally recognized tribes in the Colorado River Basin. The initiative focuses on enhancing drought resiliency, improving water delivery efficiency, and addressing drinking water shortages. With a maximum award of $1,000,000 per tribe, this program encourages collaboration and aligns with federal priorities to effectively mitigate drought impacts within tribal communities.

The Safeway Foundation offers grants to nonprofit organizations in Denver, focusing on health, hunger, education, veterans, and diversity. Grants typically range from $500 to $5,000 for first-time applicants, with higher amounts available for established organizations. Eligibility requires a valid 501(c)(3) designation and a commitment to serving the local community. The Foundation does not fund individuals, political or religious organizations, or fundraising events. Applications are reviewed quarterly, with an 8-week response time.

The Indian Affairs Department (IAD) is a Cabinet Level agency within the Executive Branch of the State of New Mexico.

The Indian Affairs Department (IAD) is a cabinetlevel agency within the Executive Branch of the State of New Mexico, leading change through a variety of programs and administration of funding opportunities. IAD investigates and addresses the health, economy, education and legislative impacts affecting Indian conditions and relations in New Mexico.

IAD collaborates with other state agencies, promotes public participation and serves as the clearinghouse for all state programs impacting Indian communities.

The department may hold hearings, conduct meetings, investigate issues and partner with tribal, local, state and federal entities to promote the welfare of New Mexico’s Indian people.

It also contracts with tribal governments, public agencies or private entities to provide services and facilities for Indian communities.

IAD also focuses on matters such as Behavioral Health & Suicide Prevention, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP), Environmental Justice, Policy & Legislation and more.

Tribal Community Garden

Tribal Community Gardens is intended to support projects that promote community gardens through community-led initiatives that provide education, hands-on gardening experience, home garden resources, and long-term sustainability through seed saving and community capacity building.

Purpose

The purpose of this funding is to strengthen food sovereignty, community wellness, environmental stewardship, and cultural knowledge through community-led gardening initiatives. Funding will support Nations, Pueblos, and Tribes in establishing or expanding community gardens that provide education, hands-on gardening experience, gardening resources, and longterm sustainability.

Projects should increase access to healthy foods by encouraging community members to engage in gardening while preserving traditional agricultural knowledge, encouraging intergenerational learning, and building local systems that continue beyond the grant period.

The Andrew Piech Memorial Scholarship, established in 2010, supports students pursuing degrees in Automotive Technology and related fields from nonprofit institutions in New Mexico. Awarded to high school seniors and continuing college students, the scholarship offers one to two awards annually, up to $2,200. These funds cover educational expenses, including books and materials, fostering the next generation of automotive professionals passionate about their craft.

The Bob Chavez Scholarship for the Arts, administered by the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, supports students from federally recognized Pueblos in New Mexico pursuing degrees in the visual arts. Established in honor of Bob Chavez, this scholarship aids high school graduates and college students demonstrating a commitment to fields like graphic design and photography. Applicants need a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must provide verification of Pueblo affiliation through a letter of support. This initiative fosters artistic talents among Indigenous youth.

The Carl F. Scott Scholarship Fund for Tucumcari Lodge #27 A.F. & A.M. supports New Mexico residents from Quay County pursuing post-secondary education. Open to graduating high school seniors and nontraditional students, the fund awards scholarships annually for various degree programs. In 2021, 15 awards between $750 and $2000 were granted. Applicants must demonstrate a coherent degree plan and meet specific residency and educational criteria. The fund honors Carl Scott's legacy of supporting local education.

2026-2027 AmeriCorps State Request for Applications – AmeriCorps Operational Programs

Funding Overview

The 2026 AmeriCorps Operational Programs competition is to request applications to establish AmeriCorps programs throughout the State of New Mexico to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic participation through service. All updates and amendment notifications will be sent out to those organizations that submit a Notice of Intent to Apply on February 9, 2026.

This funding competition is for AmeriCorps Operational Programs. This opportunity combines the former “Competitive” and “Formula" competitions into one Request for Applications (RFA).From this one RFA, the Serve New Mexico Commission will consider, after a review process, which successful applicants will be considered for the Competitive competition and submitted on behalf of the Serve New Mexico Commission to be considered by AmeriCorps for Funding and which applications will be considered for the “Formula” funding which is provided by AmeriCorps and based on a population-based formula to distribute AmeriCorps funding to each state.Those applications that are selected for the “Competitive” opportunity should note that while the Serve New Mexico Commission will review the received application and conduct a review process designed to identify and determine which programs will be represent the Serve New Mexico Commission, the funding decisions will be made by AmeriCorps.All applicants who are selected for the Competitive, will also be considered for Formula in the event they are not selected for funding by AmeriCorps.There will be a separate competition for Planning Grants, and Operational Programs in the first or second year of funding after the Formula allocations are made available to the states. The Cheryl L. Wase Memorial Scholarship, provided by the Society for American Archaeology, supports New Mexico women pursuing degrees in archaeology. Jack's Community Grants, managed by the Jack in the Box Foundation, seeks to empower youth in local communities by providing funding to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. These organizations must focus on feeding, educating, and empowering youth and operate within 50 miles of a Jack in the Box restaurant. The Foundation promotes originality and opportunity while ensuring that applicants adhere to a nondiscrimination policy. Special consideration is given to applications with support from franchisees or employees.

The Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assistant Scholarships, offered by the Pacific Dental Services Foundation, provide financial aid of up to $5,000 for eligible dental assistant students. Applicants must be over 18, U.S. citizens or legal residents, and enrolled in a qualifying program. The scholarship emphasizes mentorship and training, supporting the next generation of dental assistants. Awards are based on financial need and application quality, with multiple cycles each year to support aspiring professionals.

The Creative West Artist Fund supports artists and cultural practitioners across 16 states, providing essential funding and resources to enhance their emotional and financial well-being. Rooted in values of Democracy, Wellness, and Belonging, this initiative offers no-strings-attached funding alongside coaching and community care. It aims to empower artists as vital contributors to the creative economy, while promoting equitable and trust-based grantmaking practices. The fund serves to foster a rich creative community through collaboration and support.

The Manuel Lujan Excellence in Education Scholarship Fund, established in honor of former U.S. Representative Manuel Lujan Jr., supports graduating seniors from 24 designated high schools in central New Mexico. Each selected student receives a $500 annual award for up to four years to attend a New Mexico four-year college or university. This initiative aims to alleviate college costs and encourage higher education among local youth.
